“Peter” is a metaphor for all of humanity, not one person is how some interpretations go. Or you could interpret it as there is a rock inside of all of us to build the church inside ourselves to go out into the world.
Then every individual can decide for themselves what the teachings are and what the bible means. Mostly you have just proved the point that you can justify anything you do because you are the church. You then can make up your own sects with your own interpretation of the bible.

Why is it that protestants want to twist the meaning of this so much. Peter means rock. Peter was a person not many people. I would have never guessed to interpret the verse the way you are interpetting it. It is pretty straight forward. I think your interpretation was a direct result of justifying many churches.

I was a protestant at one time. There is nothing wrong with what you believe. More power to you, but if you see that the Catholic church is the way and you ignore it, God help you.

A couple comments:

I believe NewUlm is a Catholic (at least that what his/her profile states).

Also, I disagree, I say it does matter what a person believes, after all the salvation of souls is on the line. If NewUlm is in error, then most certainly there is something wrong with what he/she believes, as it could possibly cost him/her as well as others their very soul.

Just my .02

New Ulm, again I respectfully ask you to back up your claim that Peter is to be understood metaphorically.

Use citations and give me the works, as I missed this somewhere in my Catholic life.

You do have a point, but if it is beyond someone’s understanding to realize the truth how can they be at fault?

The important thing is not go against the teachings of Christ. We are all called to do God’s will. We must all try to understand what God wants us to do.

They could not be at fault if this were the situation. However, it is our obligation as Christians to seek truth in our study…and that truth is from only one source, the Catholic Church.

This wasn’t about who’s fault it was, this was about whether or not there was anything wrong with believing something false (especially in matters with such extreme consequences.)

The one source is Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe Jesus founded the Catholic church. So the Catholic church gets the truth from the Trinity and must consult the Trinity in every matter.

Let’s not let pride in the Catholic church come between us and the protestants.

And let’s not mistake speaking the truth in charity for being prideful.

Why does everything end up being an argument? Why do all of these threads end up being a “We’re right, you’re wrong” discussion? For goodness sake people, we are Christians! We love the same God, we strive to live Godly lives. We are all one body! So what that we can’t agree on everything! We will be worshiping side by side in Heaven someday, and that’s all that matters.

Well said. Thank you:thumbsup:

I would never do that. I agree that the trinity is the source of truth, but that same trinity operates through the Church that Christ established. This is supported in scripture as well 1 Timothy 3:15 to be precise. In that passage, the pillar and foundation of truth on Earth is the Church…which Church?..well, there was only one at the time. You guessed it, the one founded on Peter…the Catholic one. And, that Church still functions to this day. I think that it is sad that some errant men have divided the congregation of Christ for their own ends by perpetuating errant information. This, of course, is what the Vatican letter was all about. Indeed the Christian Churches outside of the Catholic faith have been wounded. They were wounded by the false teachings of men whose own personal ends were more important to them than the congregations that they claimed to serve.

I do not think that this should be sugar coated for anyone. The issue at hand is the salvation of the human soul and the correct teaching of Christ. From the Bible itself we see only one vessel for that teaching here on Earth…the Catholic Church. I think we do a disservice to our protestant brothers and sisters by presenting this information in any other way. It is time that the truth was told, and I am glad the Pope is telling it.

But what if we are not all in Heaven together someday? I have based my life on the Bible and what it teaches. This, in the end, was the reason for my conversion…because there is a Right and Wrong out there when it comes to how this teaching is to be done. The Bible is clear as a bell on that. Jesus establishes one Church not 30,000. Jesus gives teaching about things like eating his flesh and drinking his blood that the Catholic Church still maintains to this day and other churches laugh at. The Bible teaches confession of our sins to other, yet protestants laugh at the concept. Someone please tell me where it says in the Bible that we have the freedom to follow these teachings and abandon those teachings and still make the grade for heaven?

I am sorry. I am all about charity and discussion, but there is a right and wrong on this issue, and I think it is time that we stop denying that to try and make each other feel good.

I agree about the arguing, however it is understandable as we believe what we believe is the truth and necessary for salvation. We also know that only relatively few people will be in heaven when compared to the number in hell, so I don’t think we should have the attitude that “we’ll all be in heaven together, so don’t argue about who’s right and wrong…” as it could cost someone their salvation.

Let’s not focus on who’s right, but what’s right. The "who’s" can lead to pride and closed doors, however when focusing on what is actually true then I think we’d avoid some of the excessive heat that these discussions tend to bring.

Because truth matters. Because authentic unity never compromises the truth.

This statement does seem to upset a lot of people if interested check out the discussion board on this story on MSNBC. I sense a lot of hate towards Catholics in some of the posts.

At that MSNBC site someone said," The Catholic church is making decisions lately that are wounding its own image."

On the contrary I believe the Church is making decisions that are making us stronger. You can see how upset Satan gets by reading some of these posts. Our Holy Father as Defender of the Truth is obviously on the right track. Praise God!:knight2:

Right on!

Then fine. Argue away. I for one, am finished with it. It accomplishes absolutely nothing, except making us feel unwelcome here. If God wants a unified body of believers, I’m going to do my part to give it to Him. If we can’t come under the same banner, the least I can do is recognize that my Catholic brothers and sisters love the same God that I do, and that is enough for me.

For the record, I hope you are right. Yet, the reason that I am Catholic is that I fear that you are wrong. I fear that what you are suggesting is simply not enough.
