(ANSA) - Rome, January 9 - Courses in spirituality or searching for answers through yoga are a waste of time because only through God can individuals find the love that sets them free, Pope Francis said Friday.
In a homily during morning Mass at the Vatican guesthouse where he lives, the pope said that many people are seeking peace and a feeling of freedom, and try to find this through yoga and Zen studies.
But those options appeal to an individual’s pride, and instead, it is only by humbly accepting the Holy Spirit that a person can be free, the pope said, according to Vatican Radio.

He’s absolutely right. Excellent clarity and forcefulness in proclaiming the truth!

I’d say 99 percent of the people I know do yoga for exercise, not to search for an answer.
Most yoga classes are about stretching and relaxing the body and breathing efficiently and making the muscles limber–unless you specifically take something that is Zen-Buddhist-Hindu oriented.
One boxer I know started yoga…and it improved his boxing, go figure.
It’s a slow, safe stretch for all different body types and ages, which is good.

.
So why not just call it exercise or stretching?

So why not just call it exercise or stretching?
Because it is ALSO about relaxing the body and breathing.
It would be a mouthful to say, “I’m going to my relaxing stretching breathing class. Be back later.” It’s just yoga. 🤷

I agree with Pope Francis that it doesn’t have any answers, just like a spin class doesn’t, either.

my wife enjoys it, and she said they do it on ewtn. no fuss, as long as your not participating in the mystical stuff at the beginning of class.

Actually, I think it does have some answers, as well. I remember once reading one kind of yoga and its philosophy, which greatly resembled the 10 commandments!

Non-killing, non-harming, truthfulness, …

To say yoga has no answers is probably not correct.

There is one branch of yoga…surrender to God’s will…non-violence…celibacy/chastity, not stealing (not even taking credit for an idea that is not your own), purity, contentment, austerity, non-coveteness, self control.

I disagree with the pope on this one.

Once, someone at the university and I had a really bad argument, and we were reconciled at a yoga class, something I NEVER thought was even possible!

I have actually never had anything like that, not even at church.

I remember I used to take a yoga class with a friend. Initially, his mother was opposed to it. Later, she said for him to GO to class, because he was being difficult. After class, she noticed he was at peace, easier to work with.

I also used to volunteer at some places with kids and teens. One of the places practiced yoga, and I knew someone who volunteered at different places. He said the kids at that place were different, that they came to class MOTIVATED to learn, that it was like night and day.

Generally, at the churches I go to, there is pretty much almost zero fellowship. People come, do their duty, and leave. Some even will tell you that, that.

With yoga, we´d also have fellowship.

please don’t try to lead people into sin by telling them that yoga (not the exercise part) is good for them.

If you think that truthfulness, chastity, purity, non-stealing, and non-violence is bad, that´s your decision.

I used to think the Catholic Church held a monopoly on truth. Now, I no longer think so.

Because it is ALSO about relaxing the body and breathing.
It would be a mouthful to say, “I’m going to my relaxing stretching breathing class. Be back later.” It’s just yoga. 🤷

I’m going to exercise class.

It could also be a good way to share the Faith…

‘I’m going to exercise class’
But I thought it was a yoga class?
‘Not for me it ain’t’ 🙂
