I am not saying we will see it overturned, but your description is inaccurate. The statement was either ex cathedra or it wasn’t. It wasn’t. A Pope cannot bind future Popes with statements of opinion, no matter how strongly held. Future Popes (and Councils) have the authority to say something different. They may or may not, I don’t know. But that is the status of the doctrine.

Lets keep in mind that the Pope is not just Infallible when he speaks, Ex Cathedra. He is also Infallible when he speaks to the whole Church on matters of Faith,( what we are to believe) and Morals, (how we are to live our faith). This was NOT just an ‘opinion’ of his. God Bless, Memaw
When the pope says “The Church doesn’t have the authority” and that his pronunciation is “binding on all of the faithful”, that is an infallible ex cathedra pronouncement. If any future pope were to overturn it, it would mean that John Paul was wrong, and therefore not infallible, and therefore not Pope or…the future pope is not infallible and therefore not pope.
I agree, the Pontiff is an incredibly cordial and gracious man. I wouldn’t expect him to snub anyone. I just felt the title of the article misleading and potentially confusion to any Catholic who was wondering about the whole “woman priest” thing? And what would you call a woman priest, “Father”? I mean, you hear a woman’s voice on the other side of the confessional screen and you say “Father forgive me for I have sinned”? :scratch:

Thanks for that - it confirms what I previously posted in this thread, that, in my reading, the Church document is only addressed to senior Catholic clergy (bishops) for handling grave delicts by other Catholic clergy (bishops and priests). It doesn’t even apply to Catholic laity - let alone members of other churches and ecclesial communities.
