One can say Limbaugh has nothing to do with this thread. Who brought him into it? One brings Limbaugh into it, then, he is fair game and he has some moral views.

As for Limbaugh talking about Marxism, excuse me, I may disagree with this but there are signs where one could make the case for such.
First, Limbaugh doesn’t ipso facto equal abortion. He might have views about peanut butter sandwiches or gas chambers but neither are pertinent to this discussion.

Second, if you’re comfortable with Limbaugh claiming Francis wants the US to reject capitalism and embrace socialism, you’re also comfortable with Limbaugh claiming that Francis accepts a philosophy rejected by the Church.

Ha the daily news gossip rag now became Gods Word for the left overnight. 😉

Now we are out on a tangent but many Trump supporters dislike Rush and Rush has come out and unabashedly, endorsed Ted Cruz.

Limbaugh’s brother is Catholic and Rush is pro-life totally, so in that, I won’t throw out the baby with the bathwater as they say.
Not that I care, but Limbaugh actually supports cruz over trump.
What do you think of this exchange?

RUSH LIMBAUGH: Well, there’s big news to open the program with. CNN just reporting that il Papa, Pope Francis, upon boarding the pope jet on the return to Italy from Mexico said that Donald Trump is not a Christian. Man are they pulling out all the stops now. The Pope says that Donald Trump is not a Christian, because Christians do not build walls, they build bridges. Nevermind that the Vatican is surrounded by a wall and we won’t even talk about who built that wall. But that’s what the pope said. And given the pope’s political leanings I’m surprised he isn’t on the campaign trail for Bernie Sanders. But maybe Bernie Sanders is too far to the right for the pope.

Okay, over my lunch hour, I was listening to Rush Limbaugh who was very critical of the Pope’s words. He then aired Trump’s response as to Trump’s displeasure with the Pope’s words.

Here’s what the Pope said:

Let me just say I am very disappointed in Rush Limbaugh who claims to get his facts straight and has the audacity to trust news sources he knows twists things. I’m done with Rush Limbaugh and his continued support for Donald Trump. To Limbaugh, Trump is golden because he’s “anti-establishment”. Rush claims to be conservative. What he really is, is an anti-establishment guy. This election cycle is proving that out. I’ve been listening to Rush’s show for over 20 years. I’m done with him./QUOTE

Then some good is coming from this kerfuffle.

Media Matters is another lost left gossip rag unacceptable. Just google it 🙂

This is a Catholic forum, if one reads some of the guidelines, it mentions in reading news articles that they may tie into the Catholic faith, Rush’s brother David I understand, converted to Catholicism. Why was not the same objection one is voicing brought on this?

I have heard Rush Limbaugh speak about a statement Pope Francis has made and said “That’s straight Marxism”, not the topic of this thread by the way, once again, perhaps one thinks it is okay for some to go off-topic per their own definition but as to Rush Limbaugh saying Pope Francis wants the US to reject capitalism and embrace socialism, I have not heard this and such allegations really should be proven!

The link is from media matters - yes. However, just listen to the audio of Rush himself and ignore what media matters has to say about it.

I heard the exchange live on my lunch break. Very disappointed.

Well, Trump advocates torture, which is against Catholic teaching.

Jim
I thought that the Church, including Pope Innocent IV, approved the use of torture in the Inquisition? (See the entry “torture” in the New Catholic Encyclopedia ).

Media Matters just reports what people say. They leave it to the reader to make up their mind. I guess we now know who started the Vatican wall meme. Now I know why his followers proudly claim the mantle ditto heads.

CAF readers, pay attention! This post is the most insightful of the lot. There is indeed a difference between calling someone not a Christian and saying that their behavior is not Christian. I’m now inclined to change my view about what the Pope actually meant.
Sadly, the excuse makers have yet to say that is what was meant.

I suspect he meant that sort of behavior ui unchristian. Sure. Everyone’s behavior is at some point.

That does not stop making the person a Christian, any more than Joe Biden stops being a Catholic because he ignores Church teaching on a host of issues.

Instead, you get a group of people agreeing with what was literally said and saying “Trump can no longer be a Christian.”

That’s nonsense and a bunch of garbage. Of course he is. He was baptized.

Most mature folks who heard the Pope, however inaccurate his specific words were, knew what he was getting at, and likely agreed.

It’s basically like him saying to me:

Him - “Max, a person who types on Catholic Answers whilst on the clock at work is behaving in an unchristian manner.”

Me - **bows head * *“Yes, Holy Father, I know.”

versus

Him - “Max, a person types on Catholic Answers whilst on the clock at work is not a Christian.”

Me - *head snaps out indignantly *“Say what???”

So you think the inquisition was a good thing?

So how come the left and right are not catering to ALL these “Catholics” coming into the country? Well the left doesn’t cater to Christianity and the right has what excuse? 🙂

In very specific circumstances.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_extirpanda
The following parameters were placed on the use of torture:[3]
  • that it did not cause loss of life or limb (citra membri diminutionem et mortis periculum)
  • that it was used only once
  • that the Inquisitor deemed the evidence against the accused to be virtually certain.

Does no one understand metaphors? Building bridges, not walls? One cannot go into Vatican City without seeing more nationalities than any other place on Earth of similar size. It is the most “wall-less” place on Earth. “Christian” has more than one meaning. In the sense of being “like Christ”, in this context, one who does not welcome the stranger is not like the one who said, “I was a stranger and you invited me in.”

I guess Trump missed that one. (Matthew 25, btw)
Not just Trump, it seems.

This does not dissuade my vote. Not this time.
I am sure Pope Francis is as hopeful in Trump as any person on this earth.
that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
Matthew 5:45

Ha the daily news gossip rag now became Gods Word for the left overnight. 😉
Does anyone bother to read what Pope actually said? He did not even use Trump’s name. He applied it to anyone who would build walls while not trying to build bridges.

I haven’t heard the exchange, but is it wrong to criticize the Pope’s political statements (as opposed to Catholic theology)? As far as I’m concerned, America’s immigration policy is a political issue. When he speaks on political issues, it should be fair game for critique.
This is what the Pope said:

Pope Francis: Thank God he said I was a politician because Aristotle defined the human person as “animal politicus.” At least I am a human person. As to whether I am a pawn, well, maybe, I don’t know. I’ll leave that up to your judgment and that of the people. And then, a person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel. **As far as what you said about whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and in this I give the benefit of the doubt. **

This is what Rush Limbaugh said:

See what I bolded for emphasis (above and below)

Note: The pope was responding to this question:

Phil Pullella, Reuters: Today, you spoke very eloquently about the problems of immigration. On the other side of the border, there is a very tough electoral battle. One of the candidates for the White House, Republican, Donald Trump, in an interview recently said that you are a political man and he even said that you are a pawn, an instrument of the Mexican government for migration politics. Trump said that if he’s elected, he wants to build 2,500 kilometers of wall along the border. He wants to deport 11 million illegal immigrants, separating families, etcetera. I would like to ask you, what do you think of these accusations against you and if a North American Catholic can vote for a person like this?
