Pope suggests Trump: not Christian

These comments today by the Pope have set up yet another roadblock for Protestants who are open to investigating the Catholic Church and maybe even converting. It would be one thing if the Pope had ever directly criticized any Democratic politicians, ever. But his silence on this, and what Protestants view as silence on the topic of abortion (rightly or wrongly), has driven them even further away from the Church.

Especially when he lives behind guarded walls while riding in the Popemobile. Especially since he made zero comments about Mexico’s immigration policies (which are much more stringent than the US).

Limbaugh seem a soft anti-Catholic the bit I’ve heard him. He is no Michael Savage by any stretch.

I did not know Rush’s brother converted. maybe why he is usually nuanced in his comments about Catholicsm.

He claimed today the Poe said something about Catholic politicians and abortions which I can’t fin on the news sites. If he fabricated that then I’d think his anti-Catholicism is more than soft.

We can argue all we want about particulars; our immigration system is, indeed, broken, aided in no small part by self-serving politicians who turned their heads when local farms and factories needed workers. (My daughter has worked with numerous immigrants and could tell you things that would make you look at this issue in a whole new light.)

However, I’m with the Pope on this and have a very hard time seeing how anyone who is truly following Christ could think that erecting a wall is anything but nuts. What a ridiculous waste of billions of dollars.

New Light? Many people can tell stories, I wouldn’t call on the authority of one person.

So, it is not following Christ because it would cost billions? By the way, Trump’s words is he would make Mexico pay for it, I don’t know what that means but so be it.

And how about the cost in human life? There have been massacres of Migrants in Mexico and many dying on the trek to the US or even in the desert.

Perhaps securing the border would see less of this.

One thing I will say, they say Visa over stayers account for a large part of those not here legally.

The Pope did not refer to Trump by name and even said he was not going to tell Americans how to vote.

Truth is, if any candidate wants to build a wall, while turning a cold shoulder to immigrants, they are not behaving as Christians.

I counsel caution when you think you might take sides with Trump against the Vicar of Christ regarding matters of faith or morals.
 
I think the Pope is out of control, and needs to scale back what he comments on. How many times has this Pope or the former Pope talked about the Christianity of Obama, Pelosi, Kerry, etc for being catholic and supporting abortion? Something as important as an intrinsic evil, they are mute. Something involving national security, or fake science of global warming, and he has to comment? Whatever happened to sticking to faith and morals? I wish he was more concerned with those things and less concerned with popping off about politics that do not concern him.

Limbaugh is irrelevant. Nobody listens to talk radio anymore. He’s the product of a bygone era that needs stay gone.

One thing about this Pope, he constantly forces us to think about our position on things. The media loves to take his comments and put their spin on them. I do not know in what context the Pope was speaking and so far have not found any reliable source to understand the context. However, I believe the Pope is speaking from a ultimate high level of morality. I think the Pope believes nations have the right to institute laws and enforce them. The United States has immigration laws on the books that are not being enforced for one reason or another. The wall is merely a method of enforcing existing law.

We have a similar situation with the Pope’s comments (and encyclical) regarding climate change. In a unbiased environment the Pope’s position is IMHO correct, however, when mixed with the uncertainty of the science and the use of this subject by individuals and political groups to push their illigitiment agenda it is not helpful.

Also, virtually every republican candidate has the same position on the wall; are they all non Christian? AND surely the Pope would not prefer one of the Democrat candidates whom without exception support abortion on demand.

The general gist is there; if they’re not to receive Holy Communion, it’s because of reasons that are making them behave or think in a non-Christian manner, yes?

I donate to the CHN and one of their points in bringing Protestant converts is that the Catholic church does not change.

Comments like this imply it does or will. Unless one reads them in a very nuanced way. Which most won’t.

I do think this hurts the effort to bring Protestants in. Especially the relative silence on abortion which is core to evangelical and fundamentalist Christians.

Please, see the link I pasted before. The Pope has condemned pro-abortion politicians to the point of asking bishops to bar such politicians from Holy Communion.

Read the Gospel and walk carefully here. Caring for the poor and needy is not a suggestion, it is an absolute mandate coming from our Lord. If a candidate wants to build walls and turns away from the poor, they are not acting as Christians.
