Oooh oooh YAY, I would really like it if England got another one, of course that is never going to happen, but still it would be really good.

Does anyone think the new Archbishop of San Francisco may be elevated?

The pope doesn’t have to appoint only 12 Cardinals though, JPII went over the limit he established himself didn’t he? - Having said that Pope Benedict doesn’t seem like the type of pope who would do that.
The number of cardinals eligible to vote in a conclave and the voting age limit of 80 was set by Paul VI. But as far as I know, there isn’t a specific limit to the number of cardinals that can be named in any one particular consistory.

There are going to be a fair number of cardinals reaching the age limit this year and likely in the next years as well. Since consistories aren’t usually held every year one assumes that will be taken into account.

Although it would be nice, it seems that the US is destined for fewer Cardinals. St. Louis used to have a Cardinal and I believe a few other US cities as well. It seems now that it will just be LA, NY, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston…maybe a few others???

Does Detroit still have a Cardinal?
Detroit still has a Cardinal – and don’t forget Baltimore! Baltimore, by virtue of its position as the first and oldest See in the United States, almost ALWAYS has a Cardinal.

Always hope. The old Holy Father elevated Avery Cardinal Dulles (too old to vote) and he wasn’t any type of bishop at all. It could happen. I think Cardinal Law may have to pass before Boston gets the red hat again. I DO think it’s time for more than one in the west (LA) and Denver and San Antonio would be great, or even Santa Fe.
Cardinal Dulles, when he was named cardinal, was offered episcopal ordination, and declined the dignity.

Denver has had Cardinals in the past. Plus, our Archdiocese is growing. I don’t think this pope is worried too much about the “traditional” Archdiocese in America which have had Cardinals… let’s hope Chaput stays put right where he is after the Pope announces his appointment.
Are you sure? I mean, that they were or remained Archbishop of Denver when elevated? HE Francis Cardinal Stafford was elevated, but only after he left Denver to work in Rome.

I think it is a number of years before a newly appointed Arch-bishop is elevated to Cardinal. If this is the case, the newly announced Arch-bishop of San Francisco will probably not be elevated since he has not even taken office yet.

As for other Arch-bishops, I believe St. Louis , Denver and maybe Boston may be the only candidates.
