Pope to purge the Vatican of modern music

I’m glad I could bring some levity to your day. I think it’s the only thing I’m good for sometimes - giving people a laugh. But I really don’t mean to disrespect anyone. Just venting a little in my overly sarcastic way.
it was funny, really. I needed a good laugh–I had a stressful day, but God’s good, and this too shall pass.

Thank you for your humor!🙂

I love the beauty of a TLM mass and I am a parishioner of a very old church with a beautiful choir.

But I still feel someone has to stand up for allowing a variety of music in parishes.

Is it only in America that we have this aversion to different genres of music, or different instruments used?

What about those parishes with a cultural aspect?

There are several parishes around me that I have visited. I attended a Mass for teens. They had a full band with drums, bass, guitarists, singers, etc and all the ministers were teens. Just because I don’t like that kind of music, they have to stop?

To the poster who said it’s wrong to have different genres because people are choosing Mass based on music…isn’t that contradictory…

Alright, someone asked, so I’m weighing in. Amazing Grace is okay. I don’t hate it, but I don’t salivate at the thought of hearing it. It’s certainly one of the easiest pieces to play on the piano. The melody isn’t bad, but I think God gave us more than three chords for a reason. “Go Tell it on the Mountain” can be left on the Mountain as far as I’m concerned. And don’t get me started on the worship music that consists of the soul-piercing two line refrain, “Jesus loves me, woo hoo, My Savior’s great.”

But my favorite in any Church is when they cue the recorded music, you know the karoke machine. I honestly think Jesus leaves the Church when they fire that puppy up. And i don’t blame him. That staticy, studio polished sound makes me want to head for the doors too. Recorded muzac is fine in a supermarket or bar, but I’m thinking that’s not the motif you’re going for in Church.

Sorry if I’m overly passionate about this issue. I really love music and get really ticked off when I go to Church and have to listen to garbage.
Okay, I actually laughed out loud. Good stuff.

On topic: I can’t find the words to express how lucky we are to have our Holy Father. Deo gratias.

Don’t worry, it’s O.K. by me also. I realise that in the matter of taste, everyone is an expert to a certain extent, although no one or nearly likes exactly the same things (in all, I mean)…😉 😃

It would be nice, though, if the Vatican Chorus could be made to sound like something other than a gaggle of geese. Sorry, but they’ve been an embarassment in recent decades. He should send the boys in the choir home and hire a choral director who apprenticed under Robert Shaw in Atlanta.
Seriously! When will that horrible Italian choir be asked to leave?! sigh I know it sounds awlful, but they really could find a better choir. Try some of the great etereal English choirs. That would be wonderful!😃

Does a choir have to be excellent in every respect to be able to make you pray? I thought excellence didn’t have to be there, although it may help…
But even when we try to follow our choirmaster’s instructions about doing the nuances she is asking for, I find that in doing so, especially when her nuances would differ from what I would have seen, it’s hard then to really sing the words rather than just the notes, if you see what I mean. So I wouldn’t mind a few imperfections here and there, as long as we can make out he words clearly…

I love it! A pope with apparently no sense of history. Gregorian chant was once “modern” just like anything else which is new. To decry “modern” music and ban it from use is to attempt (but by no means succeed) to cut a hole in the fabric of time.
I still want to see evidence that the sacred congregation for liturgy is commissioning new liturgical music for use by all languages so that the vaunted Catholic contribution to the arts will actually have some substance in this day.

Matthew
Gregorian chant is TRADITION. It has honored God in a musical form for centuries and instilled much contemplation in the worshippers.

There is music in Heaven…this we all know but it is neither ancient or modern…it is timeless/eternal.

drafdog, do you think the WOW Worship Tunes contribute to the arts? I really don’t know if any Christians are contributing much to music right now. It seems to me that most of them are jumping on the pop/rock bandwagon, as if that ride isn’t already crowded. Personal opinion here, but come on people. Shouldn’t Christians be using music to glorify God? Shouldn’t we setting trends instead of following them? I don’t know, but I don’t see much of an envelope being pushed. Correct me if I’m wrong.

One question - does anyone else get the feeling that a lot of the contemporary Christian artists are just singing “Christ is King” because they couldn’t make it in the secular music world? Sometimes, I think these people are just wannabes who couldn’t get a gig anywhere else. But then, I guess that’s kinda nice in a way, welcoming the rejected.

The question is how will the Pope enforce this purging when so many bishops completely ignore him or defy him and past popes?

I think the first modern musicians to be purged should be Haugen & Haas. I don’t know how many of you folks flip through the hymnals , but half the psalms and mass settings are written by them. Haugen isnt even a Catholic and Haas should know better as a catholic. Their music is so syrupy sweet.

All of you who dislike these mass setting should be supremely happy in a year or so when the new English translation comes out and the current mass settings (liked or disliked by those in the pews) have to be scrapped. Finally there may be a discussion of music without those names popping up. There will be new things to decry and bemoan.
