Pope's words about daily mass goers

I don’t understand saying it about people who go to mass every day. Why not say that about anyone going to mass and leave it at that?

I think he’s just trying to make the point that perceptions from others ‘outside’ (like seeing a person go to daily Mass, which seems to point to the person being very devout and God-loving) don’t necessarily accurately reflect how that person really is relating to God in his/her soul, and that if a person is just trying to ‘look holy’ by ‘going to daily Mass’ instead of trying to be holy totally on the inside, he/she would be better off examining his/her conscience and ‘getting right’ inside first.

Maybe because ‘daily Mass goers’ come across as holier than ‘just weekly Mass goers’? Again, kind of hyperbole but he surely does get people thinking.

Very much Jesuit thinking, too.

Jesus also said something very similar.
It’s a good thing there was no internet back then. 😏

Well, first of all, the title is misleading, that’s not what he’s quoted as saying. Did anyone actually read what he did say?

“How many times do we see the scandal of those people who go to church, and are there all day or go every day, and then they live hating others or talking badly about people. This is a scandal. It is better not to go to Church if you live like that, like an atheist. But if you go to Church, live like a child, like a sibling, and give a true testimony, not a false testimony.”

Of course it’s a scandal. He’s only speaking the truth.

He may be speaking the truth about something other than the title, but he did aim it at people that go every day… Why was that necessary?

I know lots if daily mass goers, they are not, to a person, holier than thou types.

How many times do we see this scandal Holy Father? Never

The implication is that this scandal is common among these daily mass attendees. It’s not, why insult them with such an implication?

No one tries to “look holy” by going to daily mass. It’s too much of a commitment for it to be a farce.

People who go every day, or are there all day, and live hating others or talking badly about people.

Are you really upset that he’s calling out people who only pretend to live the faith?
I give up.

Jesuit thinking to insult a lot of good and holy people?

Again, how many times? Never. And he is a bishoo who has said many daily masses, he knows the answer.

No, you misunderstand me. Yes, call out people who only pretend to live the faith, I don’t disagree with you on that, but why is he only calling out those who go to mass every day?

I do not want to bash Pope Francis,…
Then don’t. You actually have to read articles today and not just the title. As stated above, the sentence that the Pope actually said was, " "How many times do we see the scandal of those people who go to church, and are there all day or go every day, and then they live hating others or talking badly about people.

Note that he said “hating others,” not “hating the world.” Jesus called such “brood of vipers” in his day. Come on.
The implication is that this scandal is common among these daily mass attendees
The Pope is over the world, not just the United States, or Europe. Your experience may not be his. If you do not want to bash the Pope, it is simple enough to refrain from judging him over snippets of homilies.

He never said anything about all attendees. He only took a subset, those trying very hard to look holier-than-thou, and said that if they’re doing that and then not following their faith, they’re wrong. He could’ve chosen daily rosary users, or mission workers, something people do to look holy.

Stop being offended by things because you’re looking for reasons to be offended. It’s pathetic, and i’m tired of people bashing the pope because they can’t handle somebody who speaks about morality and faith in a new way.

I’d like to know where Pope Francis is meeting all these lay people who go to Mass every day and are at the church all day. Such people are pretty rare to begin with, at least in US culture. I agree that if you’re making the commitment to find and get to a Mass daily, you’re probably not the kind of person who goes around hating others or hating the world, at least not in my neck of the woods. So when he says “How many times do we see the scandal of those people who go to church, and are there all day or go every day, and then they live hating others or talking badly about people” my response is, “I see that zero times.” I wonder if it’s somehow different where the Pope comes from, as I always think these statements of his are reflecting some culture that’s not necessarily the USA.

I’m not aware of anybody who goes to daily Mass trying to “look holier than thou”. It’s not like anybody else except the other 10-20 people who bother going to daily Mass are going to see what you’re doing anyway, much less care.

I often feel that the Church doesn’t particularly value people who try to be devout. It kind of takes them for granted like the Non-prodigal Son while it’s busy trying to reach out to all the Prodigal Sons out there. Which is fine, I guess, because devout people should not be doing their devout practices to try to get a gold star from the Church, and getting ignored or seemingly even criticized is good for one’s humility. At the same time, it can be discouraging to hear statements like this suggesting that the Pope thinks devout people are somehow hypocritical.
