Don’t you do any research on your Catholic faith? Catholics know why we have a pope, and we don’t see him as a God. (And please capitalize the word God.). I could be wrong, but this post sounds a lot like a Protestant in disguise  But I’ll be willing to hear what other Catholics here say to this “Catholic” op. 🍿

Why do we have Popes? Read Matthew 16:18

“God”- we don’t treat him like that. Where did you hear that one? You must be thinking of infallibilty. We believe the Pope is perfect-in terms of faith and morals. Otherwise he’s just as IMperfect as the rest of us.

“Father”- Jesus called Abraham father. What Jesus meant was that we should call no man father the way we call God the Father.

Hope that helps. 👍

you are wrong.its just something ive thought about.
The papacy is Biblical. Jesus told Peter “On this rock, you will start my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail”. Jesus left Peter the authority to govern the church while in his absence until his return. We, as Catholics have an unbroken line of popes, 266 of them from Peter up until now, Benedict the 16th. The pope is the authority of the Roman Catholic church. If we didn’t have authority, we would be in confusion and chaos like all the other 30,000 denominations who just start their own churches, and can do whatever they choose to do. Jesus told Peter “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven”. This starts the papacy. Peter was bishop of Rome for 25 years. There should be a line of popes in your bible as an unbroken link from 2,000 years until now. The pope is the “Vicar” of Christ here on earth. This doesn’t mean he is God or that he is treated as such. He kind of keeps everything in order including head of the 1.5 Billion Catholics here on earth.

ive always wondered why we have them.
Because Jesus said to Peter, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

And because Paul told Timothy, “[W]hat you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2). In this passage he refers to the first four generations of apostolic succession—his own generation, Timothy’s generation, the generation Timothy will teach, and the others they will teach.
and why do we treat him like he’s some sort of god.
We don’t.
and why do we call the preachers father.when their is only one true father and no one else should be put on that pedistil except for god, right.maybe, im wrong.inform me
Jesus is warning people against inaccurately attributing fatherhood—or a particular kind or degree of fatherhood—to those who do not have it.

After all, it was St. Paul who stated, “I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (1 Cor. 4:14–15).

He’s not God. He’s not Jesus. He’s not a god. We don’t worship him. Jesus gave Peter special authority to lead his church, and we have Popes because Peter was not able to fill the position of leader until the end of time. 🙂
and why do we call the preachers father.when their is only one true father and no one else should be put on that pedistil except for god, right.maybe, im wrong.inform me
Because the term father is used to describe a spiritual teacher. This is not the same thing as saying that someone is equal to, or a substitude, for God. Even the new testament shows this:

When John writes to the leaders of the Church:
1 John 2:13-14: I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.

Paul thinks of the people in the church as his children, which implies that he would be some sort of father.

1 Corinthians 4:14-15 : I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.

Priests are fathers. Not THE Father. If you have Mat. 23:9 on your mind, you’ll find that in context Jesus is speaking against idols, or against exalting one’s self.

Hi. Good for you to ask this type of questions here. Hopefully you will be adequately answered by Catholic posters here.

We meet all kinds of Protestants who simply know nothing about the Catholic faith. What they know would be simply parroting what their pastors are telling them. Of course some of those information about Catholicism are grossly wrong and misguided, that you can sound ludicrously ignorant. But don’t worry. You still can get some basic information here. But I suggest you go to the main page of the Catholic Answer and go into library. You’ll get more authoritative information there minus the squabbling that you often get at the forum.

God bless you. 🙂

Erhm…
why we have them.and why do we treat him like he’s some sort of god.
Well, while your “we” suggests you identify yourself as ‘catholic’, your statement of treating him like ‘some sort of god’ suggests to me that your belief is not actually catholic.

The Pope is not God, nor is he “some sort of” god according to Catholic teaching. Therefore you cannot say “we” as practical (that is, practicing and informed) Catholics if you treat or believe that the pope is the or a God/god.

IF YOU treat him as some sort of god, then you need to be aware that your belief is heretical and non-Catholic, and should seek out your priest for clarifying instruction. Unless, of course, you are part of some non-catholic religion who also uses the term ‘pope’ for one of its leaders… in which case you need to clarify the ‘we’ part of your statement.

The station of pope is that of the ‘head’ bishop, just as Peter is seen as the ‘head’ Apostle, and thus it is why the verse given before is used to support the station of the singular papal seat. Jesus’ singling out Peter from among the disciples is carried forward in the role of the pope; just as the ‘station’ of the disciples is carried forward in the role of the Bishops.

In a particular sense, you are correct, God is our ‘only’ Father; but is that actually the case? I was not born of a Virgin, so I, at least, cannot ABSOLUTELY say that God is my Only Father. Therefore, in an absolute sense, I have at least two fathers; God and my ‘bio-dad’. Now, when I expand my family community to include my ‘family of the faith’, or religious community, it seems only natural that the leader of that family, who is the local priest, would, in a sense, be my father there. So now, I have three Fathers; yet God is clearly the most significant and eternal of these, and by His nature He is the only one that is worshiped. My calling Him ‘father’ is not a strict application of definition (in which case Maker would be more appropriate), but a term of endearment He has asked us to use to remind US of the closeness He seeks with us. Only Jesus could say, in all possible senses, that “God is my only Father”.

That verse is the commissioning… not the title. Jesus gives Peter the keys to the kingdom (authority in his steed) and he also told him he had the power to bind and loose… which he (with his authority) shared with the other apostles.

The term pope is the affectionate term for Father in Latin… that is why we call the pope the pope.

God has never left his people unattended since the beginning. Jesus our new shepherd, has resurrected to prepare many Mansions for us, if this were not so, he would not have told us this. So Jesus placed his earthly authority upon Peter and his successors, which is an unbroken line of Popes since Peter. The successor of Peter today, the Vicar of Jesus Christ or his primeminister on earth is Pope Benedict XVI.

Wont dont worship the Pope, we respect him, as any loyal subject respects his Kings primeminister. The Pope possesses the Keys of the kingdom of God on earth meaning authority of Jesus in his steed, this authority was given to Peter and his successors by Jesus himself. Read Mathew 16:14-19.

We only have one Father in heaven not many. Our priests are our Spiritual fathers, meaning our local shepherds serving God’s people, they guide us to the Father and excercise the sacraments in persona Christi, according to Jesus commands to Peter and the apostles to baptize, forgive sins, heal the sick, confect the Eucharist etc.

Well, do not listen to this “Jehovah’s Witness” for they are a cult and are brainwashed. Instead since he is asking you questions that you cannot answer, ask him this one: If witnesses have the truth and nothing to fear from self-investigation, why are they officially forbidden from reading any materials that cross-examine their doctrines? Also:
Why are you called “Jehovah’s Witness” and not Christians since JW appeal to Isaiah 43:12, 44:8 for Scriptural support that they should be called JW, then what was the new name prophesized in Isa 62:2? Can’t be JW, for God already used it for 20 chapters earlier. Could the new name be Christian after our Savior Jesus Christ?

Well, you could try buying a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and reading it. Or you could try looking things up here at Catholic Answers or go to newadvent.org and look them up in the encyclopedia that they have there. Good luck and God bless.

Peace,

Gail

P.S. Beg God to help you in your understanding in prayer.

I realize that you don’t “know every little thing”, I don’t know everything about Catholicism either, and I don’t suspect anyone expects you (or anyone) to know everything.

However

Calling the pope a god in the name of being a Catholic is NOT a “little thing”.

It is a very basic, almost fundamental (thanks to all the anti-catholic rhetoric out there), knowledge required in this time.

It is good to ask questions, but understand that while being baptized as a catholic doesn’t confer any practical status of being knowledgeable of what the Church teaches, or even about being Catholic. Are you indelibly marked as a Christian? Yes, that is what the church teaches. Don’t you still need to learn what that actually means and entails? Certainly. So feel free to ask.

You have shown some good discernment in recognizing the intractability of your JW friend. The good news is that, unlike the LDS, if he gets too annoying, all you have to do is stand up to him with your own beliefs or question him too hard, and he will be obliged to “shake off the dust” if his sandals and leave you alone about it all.

Perhaps your local parish will allow you to sit in on some RCIA classes so you can become familiar with the Church, particularly in an environment in which these sorts of questions will come up, and be dealt with, that aren’t necessarily found in the Catechism.

Word you might be searching for is priests. It may be a language barrier but if English is your first langueage then the fact you call them preachers is suspicious.
