I saw this print in a museum somewhere. It is called “The Holy Family Passing a Statue, the Head of Which Falls to the Ground”. It is dated to be from 1750-1753.

Notice the head of the statue falling in the bottom left hand corner.

So I really liked this painting I saw recently of the Virgin Mary called “The Lamentation over the Dead Christ” by Perugino in 1495. I can relate to Mary here. I was really moved by her expression. She looks to have an Iron Will while holding her Son. She looks sad and even looks justifiably angry.

As was explained to me in a homily once, she was the first Christian.

There have been other pictures posted about the flight to Egypt, but recently I saw one that I really liked called. “Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt” by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1647.

This event in the holy family life is important to me in a practical way. Recently I was traveling a lot. I don’t enjoy long uncomfortable flights, endless queues in airports, strange and uncomfortable beds, and unhealthy food. However, the holy family experienced much worse, and they were running for their life. These journeys are just part of life, and he can empathize with this part of the human experience too.
