We’ll just agree to disagree on it. I sincerely doubt that the older very experienced priest was wrong in any way. More likely you are just not willing to concede that you are propagating misinformation. Have a nice day.

I certainly did not imply im not willing to concede anything ive misrepresented. I am not proud. I will be happy to apologize anything ive said which is false.

Presbyterian husband at a Nuptial Mass and he was even permitted to receive Holy Communion at the wedding. We did not push for this or even ask as I assumed it would not be allowed - the priest, who was an older man and quite conservative, decided to do it on his own after speaking with my husband.
No he was wrong and should not have allowed this. full stop.

I was the non Catholic at my wedding and never recieved until I became catholic the following Easter.

Thats my impression too. I think “… decided to do it on his own” is the red flag.

Ordinarily, I don’t believe non-Catholics can receive Holy Communion:

Another reason that many non-Catholics may not ordinarily receive Communion is for their own protection, since many reject the doctrine of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Scripture warns that it is very dangerous for one not believing in the Real Presence to receive Communion: “For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died” (1 Cor. 11:29–30).

But exceptions can be made:

There are five conditions set down in canon law by which a baptized Christian who is not Roman Catholic can receive with us. Like all church law these conditions are meant to be interpreted through the lens of charity.

…a diocesan bishop is free to resolve individual cases and to craft general norms that do not conflict with current church law. One who expresses a desire to receive Communion or an attraction to the Eucharist may in fact be articulating a desire to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church.

It’s probably up to the individual priest and his bishop. It seems a priest shouldn’t decide “on his own.” Many do, though.

Scripture is very clear regarding believers marrying unbelievers…
2 Corinthians 6:14
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

I have a question for you. How would you feel if you found out he was using pornography on a daily basis? How would you feel if you were engaged and he continued to use pornography?
Jesus speaks of not committing adultery, and not even looking at a woman lustfully. The Church speaks of the dignity of the human person. How would you feel if you had a young son or daughter and their father was totally ok with pornography? Do you want them growing up with pornography being ok by their dad?

Catholics struggle with sin too, ya know?

This is not a reasonable approach to this situation.

What if a Catholic husband fell into various sins?

What if this young woman (God forbid) fell into sexual sins, and this atheist boy encouraged her to turn away?

The point is, we should not uphold the faith by placing others in “what if” situations.

No matter what happens, a Sacrament has more power to appeal to than any other marriage! Catholics should seek God in their marriage!

I have no idea if he spoke to the bishop. LIke I said, it was between him and my husband. I had quite a few other things on my mind at that point. My point was that I and my husband weren’t in there pestering him to give Communion to my husband as we both assumed the answer would be “no” because my husband was Protestant.

Hi there. I think it’s a very fair question.
An atheist boyfriend does not even think in terms of sin, and he would likely say it’s totally normal and he’s a red blooded male.
The sacraments do have power to change lives! All the more reason to find a Catholic life partner, one who does pray, go to the sacraments, and have a desire to follow Christ. One who can raise up children to follow God’s ways.
God bless and help us all in our struggles for there is no end to them!

To be fair, many atheists do have a moral compass even if they don’t ascribe that morality to God. But most atheists, and a lot of Catholics, see nothing wrong with sex before marriage. No need for her to tempt fate. If she wants to remain a good, practicing Catholic, a Catholic boyfriend, who respects the Church is the only way to go.

Hello again!
I went on a third date, and after reflecting how it went, I’m pretty sure I’m going to end it here. My faith is already a bit shaky, and although I like to believe I am a strong Catholic, it is more that I want to become one. I feel like I should be around or with people who support me in my path towards abstinence and to not stray from Christianity, and he definitely does not influence me to stay on God’s path for me. Mind you, I’m not blaming him for anything, but the person I want to be versus the person I am with him are far too different. I’ve faced the harsh reality that although I want to continue seeing him, I feel like I’d stray too far from God. I already have a little bit, and it feels horrible.
Your prayers would be greatly appreciated, especially in helping me make the right decision. Thank you so much for all these responses, and may God bless you all. 🙂

Hi Emily, Praise for your insight in this situation. It’s not everyone who can put their faith and future self ahead of what they are enjoying in the moment. It takes EXTREMELY strong faith to stay in the situation you were in and not stray, so I don’t think you should feel badly or down on yourself for not being up to it. If you’re meant to find someone, you will, and they’ll support you in all the ways your date did, and in faith too, and bring you closer to God. You may not see it now, but you’re still young. I’ll pray for you to have the strength to follow God’s path.

Salutations
God says in scripture, “DO NOT BE UNEQUALLY YOKED!”
NOW, if you stay friends and pure! If he goes to church w you and your light shining for Jesus catches his attention, stay friends. If he converts, stay pure and friends but plan for a wedding. That pure thing is non negotiable. See lust is out there. It feel like love and is gratifying. But, Love has limits and self control. Waiting is torture for both but if he stays, he loves you. SEE! Self control is an exercise that gets you through troubles. God has His reasons.
In Christs love

You did the right thing, even though it was hard. I’m proud of you! Good job! 😀
