Practical modesty

Kohl’s had some long denim skirts last summer, but for some reason they didn’t come out with them again. I don’t know why, because at least at my store they were VERY popular! The Sonoma section of Kohl’s though does have some nice, lightweight, modest dresses that are of a more casual style. They would be practical for doing everyday activities.

If you wear plus sizes, Lane Bryant has a very nice selection of clothes! A-line skirts tend to be very flattering on most women, regardless of size, and I believe the general advice is to be careful when choosing skirts with prints, but rather try and stick with solid colors. Also, try wearing the same color (or at least similar colors), because like another poster said, it creates a continues line instead of breaking up the body into different sections.
 
I have a really comfy denim maternity skirt that I enjoyed wearing with DS2 & DS3. The only problem was I didn’t realise for ages that the split up the back went waaaay higher than I would have liked. Thought it was a little breezy back there! :rolleyes: :o Baby brain strikes again! 😛
 
A good place to check for modest tops, is any place that is run to cater to the Mormons. They actually sell things that cover you, without being frumpy looking.
They also, for those who would like to find such a thing, sell shorts that come to your knees. (I used to be able to buy these everywhere when I was:blush: young, but those days went with the 😛 Roaming Bands of Wild Poodles).

It seems like a good idea and certainly cooler than layering when the weather is hot and humid.

Old Navy sometimes does have that size too but not always. My favorite stores are Lane Bryant and Target for IRL shopping and JMS (Just My Size) for on-line shopping but I can find some nice stuff at JCP too but have to be careful there as their Plus Size is as often styled to say “look at me, I’m fat!” The other places are stylish too - you know, there are many styles I can get by in that skinny girls wear too.

I LOVE Lane Bryant, and in fact some of my favorite clothes are from there! It’s just so expensive! There’s a plus size store near me that has a lot of great stuff for a lot cheaper. My mom went on a splurge once and got me a skirt and 4 tops for $30!

Another place I like sometimes is Torrid. Their clothes are geared towards teens and young adults, but I have found a couple of really pretty dresses there. You can shop online there, but they are also kind of expensive.

Personally, I think dresses are more flattering on me because they create the image of a smooth line. That said, it’s REALLY hard to find modest dresses!

If you want to wear skirts, don’t get clingy fabric. I tend to like heavier fabrics (but not thick, just a firm fabric) that is more a tulip shape or one that flutes out from the hips. Then wear a top that comes down to the hip area. It would create a smoother line, instead of breaking you up into “chunks” (at least that’s what I’ve found with my own body).

As for pants looking better than skirts, that’s just because pants create one long line from the waist to the feet, whereas skirts break you into pieces at the waist, then at the end of the skirt. I find if I want a skirt, I often look better in a dress… but pants are usually the way to go.

👍 same thing happens with my figure, and i’m 5’6" but have HIPS and a BUTT! :eek: i prefer pants

When I first started wearing dresses again, I was in the grocery store one day when it was really hot. All around me were scantily-clad females, some wearing as little as a bikini top and shorts. I had on my favorite modest, baggy cotton dress. An elderly man stopped me and said, “I just wanted to tell you, it’s so nice to see a lady in a dress.” So people do notice these things. 🙂

Yes, that’s the “vibe” i get from my neighbor, that he just thinks it’s nice to see a lady wearing a dress. His wife is always in very nice looking, modest pantsuits and maybe he’s a little nostalgic for the past. 😉 Make no mistake, he’s just as friendly to me when i’m not in a skirt, but I don’t get told, “That’s a nice outfit you have on,” then.

And yes, when I had short hair I got treated very rudely sometimes–called “sir” once, even. :eek:
 
I don’t think modesty=out of style. For me, it means not dressing like a hoochie mama. And I don’t think modesty means hiding your figure so that you look like a sack.

I find religious dress very interesting. It’s modest, for sure, but always very pristine in its cut. For that reason it looks beautiful to me.

But I think long skirts with men’s t-shirts on top look horrible on women. There were a group of girls on our campus who preferred that look, thinking it made them look more like they were discerning.

A friend of mine who discerned with the Carmelites, on the other hand, was actually instructed by the sisters how to dress well in the world. It was important in for their discernment program that the young women be “in the world but not of it.”

Walking shorts, skirts at or below the knee, dress pants that fit the widest part of the hips, deep v-neck shirts with a cami, shirts that cinch the smallest part of the torso…all very modest, and all good looking on everybody.

BTW, I love jersey cotton skirts. I live in a hot climate and they allow you to move and breathe. I do housework in them sometimes.

I agree. It’s very possible to dress fashionably while still being modest. 🙂 It’s harder in summer months because clothes tend to get smaller (short shorts and mini skirts and halter tops and strappy tank tops), but it’s not impossible to still look modern and hip, but modest.

Yeah but tell me that a nice cotton skirt that swishes in the wind in the summer time isn’t the perfect summer attire… I love light cotton skirts that come down either below the knee or mid calf in the summer!!! Usually a nice button down cotton shirt or nicer tee goes well with it… I DON’T wear cami’s by themselves… My rule is… If I can’t wear a bra with it… it won’t get worn (at least by itself)

My typical summer wardrobe consists of skirts and jeans (sometimes… the humidity kills me and I hate wearing jeans if I don’t have to) with nice t-shirt tops and these thin Old Navy v-neck t-shirts with tank tops underneath. I sometimes wear just the tank top, but not if I’m going out. I’m home by myself all day, so I have no one to dress for (and sometimes I stay in my pajamas all day 😊 ).

Oh, I also have 3 dresses that I love! I really want to learn to sew so I can make dresses that fit me properly. I’m really into “retro” dresses that are gathered at the natural waist and have full skirts… they tend to be more flattering on my figure.

That happens to me once in awhile; the last time was when I had a skirt on! I’m 5’11", and people working behind counters would just glance up, see the height and not really look at the person, and say, “Can I help you, sir?” My hair is medium-length, but this is a college town and there are a lot of guys with long hair. One time when I was a teenager, it was very cold outside and I had my shoulder-length hair up in a ski hat. The guy said, “Can I help you, sir?” so I whipped off my hat, shook out my hair, and said, “What was that you said?” 😃

Hey – they took my idea! I have done the very same thing using a cheap scarf, wrapping it through my bra straps, and pinning it down with safety pins. 👍

I wear long skirts because I never learned how to walk gracefully in shorter ones (despite wearing knee-length dresses for my uniform all through high school! :o I don’t wear men’s t shirts, because they’re not tailored for a woman’s shape, and you’re right, they look awful. I do like wearing women’s t shirts with a long skirt.

Yes. Torrid is nice. I get coupons for Lane Bryant all the time and can generally get four or five nice pieces for under $100.00.

Cato’s is another store that carries nice plus size clothes for a great price.
