Lord Jesus Christ, You have willed that St. Dymphna should be invoked by thousands of clients as the patroness of nervous and mental disease and have brought it about that her interest in these patients should be an inspiration to and an ideal of charity throughout the world. Grant that, through the prayers of this youthful martyr of purity, those who suffer from nervous and mental illness everywhere on earth may be helped and consoled. .

Be pleased to hear the prayers of St. Dymphna and of Your Blessed Mother. Give those whom I recommend the patience to bear with their affliction and resignation to do Your divine will. Give them the consolation they need and especially the cure they so much desire, if it be Your will. Through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

I, too, have felt as you. Hang in there. Things WILL get better. Keep praying and make use of the Sacraments. This is the only thing that will sustain you. I have learned this from personal experience. I will be praying very hard for you and your marriage, depression, whatever other intentions you have.

Blessings,
Judi

Broken-hearted right now - just got a call from the hosting couple of the Marriage Encounter weekend we signed up for and they had to cancel b/c there weren’t enough couples. My parents had actually given us some extra money just so we could make it out.

Yeah, it’ll be a nice financial break, but we really needed this. On a side note, I have been asked to lead a women’s bible study group. I have never been in charge of anything like this before and feeling totally unqualified. I have a very hard time feeling like I can have any part of this b/c of all the inconsistencies and struggles in my marriage. I have a really hard time being cordial and sociable amidst my heartache. Still struggling with the desire to stay at home and just some residual bitterness about not being able to solely b/c of DH’s choices or unwillingness to make this happen.

DH has been doing better as far as his attitude and demeanor and hard work and such, but he is refusing the sacraments. Seems he’s feeling really ho-hum about things and it went from just going to mass and not receiving communion now to not going to mass at all.

Please God, we need a weekend alone with real structure to help our marriage. Please make him open to your graces and the gift of faith.

Hi JLCecilia

The following is adapted from Kathleen Norris’ Acedia & Me, a chronicle of her battle with acedia. I’ve left most of that story out but have tried to focus on the literary and historical references in her work. That allows us to fill our own examples in. It’s a great book, though.

I think it is important for anyone who is religious and who is dealing with depression to be aware of acedia. I have two posts concerning it:

and:

Hope the posts are helpful

Wow, djeter. Scoped out Kathleen Norris’ book on Amazon and I’ve never read a more accurate description of the most prominant obstacle in my life to developing relationships with others. This is one I’m going to have to pick up. Thanks for the recommendation.
