Amen Momofone. The first thing I thought as the storm rapidly started losing strength just before landfall was that our prayers were heard. Not to detract from the strength/danger of the storm that ultimately struck, but the expected scale of damage probability made a pretty significant drop after the storm weakened (graph on The Weather Channel). Shortly before landfall the sustained winds maxed out at 145 mph (Category 4), then they dropped to 140, and then right on the verge of making landfall it was as if someone had stuck a pin in a balloon and the storm quite rapidly dropped another 15-20 mph. The Weather Channel’s Meteorologist reporting looked somewhat surprised as he reported that the weakening was a blessing…they weren’t expecting it to weaken. I want to add that, of course, I cannot speak for the those who endured the brunt of the storm, but the reports I have seen seem to reflect some relief among those affected in the realization that it could have been worse. I haven’t heard what conditions caused the weakening that close to shore to begin with (cold water perhaps?), but I know God was with them.
We may want to begin praying regarding Hurricane Emily. Early reports have it heading to the Gulf of Mexico yet again. It is too early to project for the U.S., but those in Barbados, and the other Carribean Islands that are currently in the storm’s path need our prayers.
