Thank you for enlightening me on different parishes!!

No problem. This is something to be aware of, as once the person locking the church did not see me still in there and I was nearly locked in for the night. The priest spotted me and I heard him telling the custodian to wait for me to leave…I hurried and rushed out.

Absolutely, the focus of the Mass should the Sacrifice of the Mass & not the Rosary. In my Parish, the Rosary is prayed before the Mass.

It is not appropriate to do other thing during the mass and Rosary is other thing. It is not part of the mass. We must put our focus on the mass. There is nothing bigger than the mass. It is the summit of worship. Why would we want to do anything during that?

Please understand that I have not ever stated this for the OF, but for the EF. It is not something required for the EF, nor should it replace attention to the EF liturgy, but may be used in conjunction at the appropriate points in the liturgy where silence and meditation are required.

Please, please stop arguing about the OF. It was never about “the rosary INSTEAD OF paying attention to liturgy in the OF”. Please keep to the topic where the original poster specifically stated this with regard to the EF. The EF. Not the OF.

The rites are different.

This was an acknowledged part of the “problem” with the Latin Mass. As Latin died out, it naturally became less relevant to the parishioners. I fail to see how Vatican II erred in noting, even requiring the full participation of the laity in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

And for the faction who will scream, let’s call for the only complete, original and genuine mass according to language: The upper room Aramaic mass.

I’m with Fr. Mitch Pacwa on this one.

Ah, but saying the rosary during a Low Mass (at points in the Mass where silence, meditation, and reflection were required) was not a problem. Latin itself was not a problem. The documents of Vatican 2 called for the continuation of Latin. And the people who attend an EF do participate fully in the sacrifice of the Mass.

It never was a question of "say the rosary or listen to the Mass’, it was listen to the Mass and at times say a rosary, meditation using other prayers, listen to chant, follow along in the missal. . .a lot of participation when one comes to actually look at what goes on.

When I was in school in the Bronx back in the “dark ages”, we learned to say the altar servers’ responses in Latin. No big deal. I can still recite the prayers in Latin from the missal including the Confiteor.

My husband grew up in Queens and only knew the Latin as an altar boy.

What has Fr Mitch to say?

I just discovered recently what ‘we don’t do that’ meant. We don’t do that at Mass, Latin or otherwise is my understanding. We respond to the Mass. I try to leave my Rosary home now during Mass so I don’t pull it out for comfort. I carry it other times as much as possible when I go out of doors. I might be the dumbest Catholic around when it comes to these things. I even have the Catholics for Dummies Book 🙂

The Roasary should not be prayed during any Mass; EF or OF. The focus is to be the Celebration of the Eucharist, not the Rosary. One is supposed to be concentrating on the Mass alone. I grew up with the Latin Mass, my brother was an Altar Server for TLM. I am also a member of the Latin Liturgy Association of my Archdiocese. We never prayed the Rosary during Mass EF or OF.

Hello.

No, we need to participate in the Mass while it’s going on.

At our parish we usually say the rosary 30 minutes before Mass starts. It helps to stop the disrespectful chatter/socializing that can go on in the church before Mass, too. People volunteer to lead each rosary and in doing so it helps out their spiritual life.

Yes, it is. You are not focusing on the Mass. Enough expert posters have spoken their knowledge on this topic. No longer going to expend my energy on one who baits.

I will encourage people to read “A Biblical Walk Through THE MASS, Understanding What We Say And Do In The Liturgy” by Edward Siri, to help us appreciate the meaning and importance of the Mass. “THE MASS”. The Mass is not the time to say the Rosary.

I think she was speaking of an EF. . . and in that case, it’s a slightly different thing. Focusing on the Mass in the EF can include practices like saying the rosary that we wouldn’t do in the OF. But that doesn’t mean that they’re wrong or off-putting. Honestly, if you get the chance, do read "Noble Beauty, Transcendent Holiness’. . .the author explains things a lot better than I do about the differences.
Even in the EF, you shouldn’t be praying the Rosary.

The practice of praying the Rosary at Mass started due to people (like St Therese’s Saintly mother) who would attend back to back Masses on Sunday. The first Mass she would pray the Mass, the second she would quietly do her devotions.

This was because Mass times were literally back to back and there wasn’t quiet time in between masses

Just curious. Which part of the EF mass would you start praying the Rosary?

With respect, Father, S.C. does not say that it is forbidden to pray the rosary at times during an EF Mass when the liturgy itself calls for times of silent prayer and meditation. And in fact Pope Pius XII in Mediator Dei stated that ‘private’ and ‘public’ (i.e. liturgical) prayer were not at odds with each other and that 108: . . .
So varied and diverse are men’s talents and characters that it is impossible for all to be moved and attracted to the same extent by community prayers, hymns and liturgical services. Moreover, the needs and inclinations of all are not the same, nor are they always constant in the same individual. Who, then, would say, on account of such a prejudice, that all these Christians cannot participate in the Mass nor share its fruits? On the contrary, they can adopt some other method which proves easier for certain people; for instance, they can lovingly meditate on the mysteries of Jesus Christ or perform other exercises of piety or recite prayers which, though they differ from the sacred rites, are still essentially in harmony with them.
While I am ‘only a humble lay person’ I submit myself to the authority of the Catholic Church. I respect your answer and you yourself so much that I will no longer post on this topic lest it be assumed that I am ‘arguing with a priest’. However, I stand by my previous statements as well as the paragraph above.

The rosary contains the Apostles Creed (which is often said at an OF Mass), the Our Father (said at all Masses), the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be, as well as the Salve Regina at the end. How are any of those prayers then ‘wrong’ if prayed during Mass at a time where one is supposed to be meditating or praying silent prayers? How are the meditations on the mysteries of the Rosary wrong when prayed at Mass?

and Phil, the practice of saying the Rosary during Mass did NOT start with the mother of St. Therese doing it 'during a 2nd Mass." She was one of many people who, in addition to following along with the liturgy of the EF, also prayed the rosary and other devotional prayers at the appropriate points in the liturgy. I don’t know where you got the story that she somehow started the practice of 'a 2nd Mass saying rosary.

Yep, I’m outta this topic. Now I’m off to pray a rosary.
