I got to return to my home parish tonight, and my pastor agreed to hear my confession after Mass. As my penance, he suggested that I pray to the Holy Spirit. I’ve wanted to grow in devotion to Him, but haven’t figured out how to get started. Any thoughts?

Yes! You can pray for an increase in the gifts of the Holy Spirit you received at Confirmation, while pondering each of the seven gifts.

You pray to the Holy Spirit exactly as you would pray to Father and Son. A few suggestions. Go before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, as the Holy Spirit is also present. In fact, His presence there (a win-win) can be so strong that it almost takes your breath away - but be patient! In older Catholic bibles the prayer to the Holy Spirit is on the pages immediately preceding the scriptures, so that you may offer Him prayer before reading scripture. You could purchase the trilogy of compact books dedicated to he Holy Spirit that were written by Fr. Andrew Apostoli C.F.R. †.

One thing that you can submit to is the baptism in the Holy Spirit, in which a charismatic priest lays hands on you and prays for the release of the charisms that you received at Confirmation. The caveat is that you must humble yourself as much as possible and be willing to accept whatever the Holy Spirit desires for you. I did this years ago and my faith life absolutely came alive. It grew exponentially.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.

Remember, the Holy Spirit IS God! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:💗💗💗 The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Holy Trinity. You can pray to him and tell him anything! He loves you just like Lord Jesus and The Father! 😊💛 Just because he’s a little more mysterious than the first two Persons (who are also infinitely mysterious!) doesn’t mean he’s anything less than God Himself. You can pour out your heart to him, tell him anything, tell him everything you are carrying, for he is God, worthy of being worshipped and adored and glorified.

God already knows what’s on our hearts, but he wants us to tell him about it freely and in true love and total trust. Only by our total openness to him do we invite him into our souls, and he fills us with his everlasting beauty and goodness.

If you don’t know what to say, then pray like this,
“Almighty Holy Spirit, I love you, and I thank you for your power and presence in my life. Please, enter my heart and fill me with your love and joy and beautiful holy mystery. Illumine my path to a clean heart. You are The Lord, the Giver of Life, as we profess. I ask to know your will, to receive the power and peace to always carry out your will, and to receive the clarity of mind to always live with the deepest gratitude for your blessings upon me. Help me carry the saving truth of Beloved Jesus into the world, to the glory of The Father, by your unfailing power, Amen!”

And remember, “amen” actually means, “I believe this so much that I stake my life on it.”

I always like this one by St. Alphonsus Liguori:

Holy Spirit, divine Paraclete, Father of the poor, consoler of the afflicted, light of hearts, sanctifier of souls! Behold me prostrate in Your presence; I adore You with the most profound submission, and I repeat a thousand times with the seraphs who are before Your throne: Holy, Holy, Holy! I firmly believe that You are eternal, consubstantial with the Father and the Son. I hope that by Your goodness You will sanctify and save my soul. I love You, O God of love! I love You more than all the things of this world; I love You with all my affections, because You are infinite goodness that alone merits all love; and since, insensible as I have been to Your holy inspirations, I have been so ungrateful as to offend You by so many sins, I ask You a thousand pardons for them, and I supremely regret having ever displeased You, O sovereign good! I offer You my heart cold as it is, and I supplicate You to let a ray of Your light and a spark of Your fire enter Therein to melt the hardened ice of my iniquities. You who have filled with immense graces the soul of Mary, and inflamed with a holy zeal the hearts of the apostles, vouchsafe also to set on fire my heart with Your love. You are a divine Spirit; fortify me against evil spirits: You are a fire; enkindle in me the fire of Your love: You are a light; enlighten me so that I may know eternal things: You are a dove; give me great purity of heart: You are a breath that is full of sweetness; dissipate the storms that my passions raise up against me: You are a tongue; teach me the manner of praising You without ceasing: You are a cloud cover me with the shadow of Your protection: You are the author of all heavenly gifts, I beseech You to grant them to me: vivify me by Your grace, sanctify me by Your charity, govern me by Your wisdom, adopt me by Your bounty as Your child, and save me by Your infinite mercy, so that I may never cease to bless You, to praise You, to love You, at first during my life on this earth, and afterwards for all eternity in heaven. Amen.

The Holy Spirit is the master of prayer and it is He who gives you the desire to pray, not you.
For me, the Spirit was the hardest to address because i could picture all others but i felt off talking to a dove but when you realise He is already within you, your prayer life can excel rapidly when you go to Him.

Speak as you normally would but be prepared to sit in silence with Him too. We need what He has to say to us, more than we need what we will say to Him. Ask Him to guide you in your prayer and He will, even if you don’t feel it.
