Pregnant Student Banned from Graduation, Walks

Was there any indication in the story if the young man and young woman are planning to get married after graduation?

Interesting story…the school granted her a diploma and actually delivered it to her home. Perhaps the school was trying to avoid scandal by not having an unwed pregnant girl march across a stage of a religious school (that undoubtedly promotes chastity). It seems the more graceful thing to do on the part of the girl and the family would have been to stay home and celebrate her graduation among family and friends. The young man could have chosen to skip graduation and be at the young woman’s home to celebrate with her.

I guess I’m not surprised because we live in times where the individual places their own feelings and wishes ahead of the good of the community. Whether we believe the school was right or wrong, the girl and her family choosing to be defiant against a private school’s protocol gives a clear message that rules can be broken if it suits our own wishes.

I wish the young lady good luck and I am glad she chose not to have an abortion. I hope that she and the young man marry and live a good Catholic life.

The school was correct to not let her walk, the school was incorrect to not include the father of the baby.

Or at least the appearance of it. The girl would have caused the school no trouble at all if she would just have had an abortion. No scandalous situation then.

I would say to the school it is a privilege to cash my tuition check. If they did this to my daughter, I would stop payment on the monthly tuition.

One final lesson for the young girl…Hypocracy! I guarentee that this is what she will remember for a long time about the Catholic faith. I just hope and pray that she keeps her faith.
Oh boy, a culture of victims, here we go!

If your contract with the school explicitly stated that she would be entitled to walk around on a stage while her name was mentioned regardless of circumstance, then yes, she would be entitled to do such. As our knowledge of the case is, she has no “right” to do such a thing.

…there was a time when i would have agreed… now, i must respectfully disagree…

…i really think (assuming she has the courage to walk) that it serves a purpose… it might deter others from making the same error… maybe???

It is a very good thing that the girl did NOT get an abortion, yet let us not forget that having sex outside of marriage is still a sin…the Church cannot condone sin. The mistake they made was NOT including the father.

spaceghost,

IMO the Church cannot support sin. The two student parents commited sin when they had sex outside of marriage. Another way of handling this would have been to ask the mother and father to give a talk to the student body about the consequences of their actions. Yet, barring that, the students should not be placing their sin on display.

…i could see your point a little more clearly, but she is the only one paying the price due to the visual evidence… there is not a student in the room (parents included) that are without sin…

…i think throwing the baby out with the bath water is not the way… no one is asking for a celebration here, just the right to get her diploma along with her peers…

… her only error is timing… i’m sure more than one is guilty of the same sin… i’ts just those that are showing?

nope, got to disagree…IMHO

spaceghost,

Let us say the girl had aborted the baby, and then after the abortion went through the school announcing her evil action of getting the abortion to everyone in the school. Would you say in that case that the girl should be allowed to graduate with her class?

It is the same in this scenario, the girl and the boy commited a grave sin by having sex outside of marriage, and that is being publicly proclaimed by the fact that she is visibly pregnant. Do you really think it is wrong for a Roman Catholic School to say that sex outside of marriage is wrong? Can you not see that the girl just stubbornly announced to her class that she did nothing wrong in getting pregnant?

The girl and the boy would have been showing a true understanding of their faith if they had chosen to speak to their class about the consequences of sex outside of marriage. But, to defiantly strut across the stage to get the diploma is just compounding one sin and top of another…never a good idea.

But no such right exists.

That is why or our basic liberties are being violated today, we have elevated every privilege that one may receive to a “right”.
We have castrated the term, so that one views each and every thing as sacred as the next. It’s an abomination to humanity.

This is the very reason women have the “right” to “choice”.

Seems to me the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. They’re saying, “If you have pre-marital sex and get pregnant, you don’t get to graduate.” Shouldn’t it be, “If you don’t do the work, you don’t get to graduate”?
She did graduate for she finished the year out with home schooling. She wasn’t allowed to walk accross the stage. However, she did it in defiance and the kids cheered her. All in all, the school looks like the loser here.

There isn’t one teenager in that class that doesn’t know right from wrong, that isn’t aware of the Church’s stance on premarital sex. A pregnant peer isn’t going to sway anyone’s view on what is or isn’t moral or sinful. We know the girl had sex before marriage by the fact of her pregnancy. The young man who got her pregnant should have been held equally culpable. Either both should have walked, or neither one.

Marilyn,

I agree, the father should be held equally culpable. With that said, neither of them should have walked.

Educators have never been the sharpest knives in the drawer, but this incident shows how stupid they really are. And these educators are dishonest as well as stupid.

They didn’t prohibit the girl from the graduation ceremony because she had sex outside of marriage, they prohibited her from participating because she was pregnant.

If she had sex and didn’t get pregnant she would have been allowed to participate. If she had the baby last year or the year before she would have been allowed to participate. The boy who had sex with her was allowed to participate. Everyone else in the school who has sex outside of marriage was allowed to participate. The only reason she was prohibited from participating was that she was pregnant.

Chris,

The educators have no way of knowing which students have had sex, and which have not. It is a Catholic school and the educators are right to think and hope that a majority of their students would be following the faith and abstain from sex. Since they have no way of knowing who has had sex, and who has not, they cannot apply the “no walk” type policy to those people who have had sex. Also, the graduating girl was pregnant, which means her sin is a known and visible sin. She should not have walked and neither should have the boy that fathered the baby.

The mistake the school made was not treating the mother and the father the same. They were both cupable and they both sinned and the educators knew that. That is where the school made the mistake.

We cannot clamor to have our atholic schools teach the faith, just to turn around and yell at them when they actually try to enforce those same teachings. We either want our kids to be Catholic, or we don’t. The school had no real choice.

TPJ,

I agree completely with your assertions. I think most folks who have heard this story disagree with your view. We have come to a point in history where a student at a Catholic school fornicates, becomes pregnant, defies the school and is celebrated for her actions.

The story did not say the girl apologized for her behavior. Is fornication no longer a sin? The school may have erred in having the male student come to graduation,. but none of that excuses the female student’s behavior in any way. As another poster said we have lost the concept of shame and modesty.

We are now told to be grateful such student did not murder her child. That seems to be a new and lower standard Catholics are held to.

Apologize? To who? You? Who is to say that she did not receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. She owes no apology to anyone but God.

:tiphat: A school full of virgins–who would have thunk?:tiphat:

I am glad that she kept the baby, and I hope that the actions of the school don’t cause her or any other pregnant student to change their mind about keeping a baby.

The statement she made by acting out as she did was that her behavior was acceptable and the school was wrong. She defied the school and was encouarged by her mother. The acts were public. She should apologize in public.

As to confession, I have no idea if she went.

She is no hero, in fact her behavior is scandalous.
