Witch hunt is the first thought that comes to my mind. Anyone who has some old grudge against a priest feels he will get an audience now. Sadly, these priests are being treated as guilty until proven innocent. A Diocese now needs to take appropriate measures, just as a school district does when similar allegations are made against one of its teachers. Unfortunately, even when accusations are proven to be unfounded, too often, the publicity given to the initial accusations outweigh any future disclaimers that those accusations were false, and reputations are forever ruined.
“The alleged sexual misconduct took place in 1991 …”
"After several interviews with both the alleged victim and Father Chase, they determined the allegation appeared to have
merit and reported that finding to the bishop April 12."
*“While on leave, Father Chase is not allowed to celebrate Mass publicly or administer the Sacraments, is not to reside anywhere in which a **minor ***lives or is present …”

My guess is that the individual making the accusation was a minor in 1991, so his/her identity will not be released. At this time, I would see Father Chase also as as “
alleged victim”.
“Merit” is very vague. I would also guess is that the alleged offense, if there are no other witnesses, happened in private, if at all, and comes down to the accuser’s word against the word of the priest. At this point in time, that is not a good position for a priest to be in. Personally, I would be highly suspect of one isolated charge. In such a case, I would tend to believe the word of the priest, and pray for him. Pray also for the one bringing charges against him.
I am not so blind as to believe there aren’t valid accusations of sexual misconduct on the part of our priests. But, we need to be discerning. There are many troubled individuals looking for a scapegoat - someone else to blame for their current challenges. The secular media has made the priest an easy target. The majority of our priests are faithful, holy men who deserve our respect, support, and confidence. We need to keep them in our prayers, not just in this Year of the Priest, but always.
