The witch hunt is on…who knows the verdict with some of these allegations? Recalling the first big outbreak, there were many who were falsely accused. This priest is stating he is innocent of all charges…“Simply not true” he states…and where is the accuser? Maybe I didn’t read closely enough but they couldn’t name the accuser. It’s a wait and see kind of thing. I am just wondering how many have been falsely accused and convicted of something they didn’t do?

The title of the thread is supposed to match the title of the news article.

I want to know why no criminal or civil charges were filed if they found the allegation to have merit. I wish they would have said why. I’m sure I’m not the only one who hates incomplete reporting.

Also, it disturbs me that alleged crimes that happen here are required by the Vatican to be all released to the Vatican for review. I hope the local authorities made copies and took pictures of the relevant documentation in case they do decide to file charges locally.

This same thing happened in our diocese this week. It saddens me so much. What is puzzling though is that the “victim” has not come forward and has filed no police report, etc. Meanwhile this poor priest has been suspended and nothing is being done, legally speaking. I hope the allegation is false. I believe there’s a good chance that it is. The Church is under attack again. I think as practicing Catholics, we all need to be praying so hard right now, for whatever victims there may be, for the priests involved, for all the good and holy priests we are blessed with and for the Church in general.

Witch hunt is the first thought that comes to my mind. Anyone who has some old grudge against a priest feels he will get an audience now. Sadly, these priests are being treated as guilty until proven innocent. A Diocese now needs to take appropriate measures, just as a school district does when similar allegations are made against one of its teachers. Unfortunately, even when accusations are proven to be unfounded, too often, the publicity given to the initial accusations outweigh any future disclaimers that those accusations were false, and reputations are forever ruined.

“The alleged sexual misconduct took place in 1991 …”*
“After several interviews with both the alleged victim and Father Chase, they determined the allegation appeared to have merit and reported that finding to the bishop April 12.”
*"While on leave, Father Chase is not allowed to celebrate Mass publicly or administer the Sacraments, is not to reside anywhere in which a **minor *lives or is present …"

My guess is that the individual making the accusation was a minor in 1991, so his/her identity will not be released. At this time, I would see Father Chase also as as “alleged victim”.“Merit” is very vague. I would also guess is that the alleged offense, if there are no other witnesses, happened in private, if at all, and comes down to the accuser’s word against the word of the priest. At this point in time, that is not a good position for a priest to be in. Personally, I would be highly suspect of one isolated charge. In such a case, I would tend to believe the word of the priest, and pray for him. Pray also for the one bringing charges against him.

I am not so blind as to believe there aren’t valid accusations of sexual misconduct on the part of our priests. But, we need to be discerning. There are many troubled individuals looking for a scapegoat - someone else to blame for their current challenges. The secular media has made the priest an easy target. The majority of our priests are faithful, holy men who deserve our respect, support, and confidence. We need to keep them in our prayers, not just in this Year of the Priest, but always.

I appreciate the posts, I really do. Please keep it up. This is a Parish not a half a mile away where the city wide ash-wednesday was last year. We’ve been there, attended the 7:30 Mass there when we wanted to get out of town early. There is a school attached to this Parish. The damage is gonna be bad. It won’t matter whether or not Fr. Terry is not-guilty. This community is only about 30,000. This is satan and my gut hurts.

I hope the priest is innocent and will be exonerated. It is curious that the victim has apparently not gone to the police.

To put one positive spin on this…at least the public will get to see, in action, the policies now in place to deal with these allegations. It seems pretty impressive (an 8 person investigative team) and prompt.

Often the victims of sexual abuse are too embarrassed, confused, afraid, and/or ashamed to come forward until years later. Some children think it’s their fault that bad things happen to them, and they don’t tell anyone. It isn’t until years later that they are ready to deal with the emotional turmoil. It’s much easier for a child to try and forget and try to bury the whole ordeal. In addition, it has to be humiliating to be subjected to scrutiny, interrogations and face people who may not believe them. Remember the priest is considered innocent until proven guilty, so the victim is often turned inside out. Years later, they can muster enough strength to come forward and try to deal with these issues, and of course, living the ordeal again.

Amen to that, been there

Remember the priest is considered innocent until proven guilty” I disagree. That is how it should be, but, not how he is treated. I know of a priest who was removed from his parish because of an accusation that was later proven to be unfounded. Meanwhile, the priest was required to undergo ‘treatment’ as if he were, indeed, an offender needing ‘rehabilitation’. The secular media has also slapped on these priests a ‘guilty’ label that retractions can never fully compensate them for when priests named are found later to be innocent.

After reading both articles, the second one from today convinces me that someone is out for a quick way to make a few extra dollars. Not one other complaint in 26 years? And now, the person refuses to file charges with civil authorities? Something stinks about this one. Considering all the recent barrage of attacks on the Catholic Church, this one is way too smelly to even gain any traction. I realize that there are some old legitimate cases, however, as previous posters point out, an allegation can be made by anyone about anything. That does not make it true, but the press will continue to hammer away. Pray for Fr. Terry and for all the parishoners at this church. Lets hope that something good comes out of the speedy response that is being made by our Catholic Church . If it turns out that there is no evidence that supports the claim, please please remember to bring pressure to bear on the press to make that a front page story, too.

Reading some of these posts are blowing my mind. Are people seriously complaining about witch hunts (ironic), media bias, and sue happy victims? The church bishop says the claim has merit. Why is that not good enough for an investigation? Why are some people complaining about things that don’t even matter? I’ll tell you what, the quickest way to not have people complain about you and charge you with rape is to not have repeated instances of rape. Once the matter is said and done with then give your spin on why person x did y, but until then you don’t know so why attack the media and victim(s)? Is it that you want to feel better about the church? Maybe the church should start turning away victims who come forward because they only want money. Maybe all forms of non-catholic media should be done away with because it only has bad things to say about Catholics when they do bad things. Come on

Thanks for your post. It makes sense. And yes I will keep my eyes on things and if there is no evidence that supports the claim, will personally write a letter to the editorial section of the newspaper.

I personally know of 2 different teachers in my area that were falsely accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. In both instances, the “victim” recanted their accusation and of course the teachers were absolved of all wrong doing. BUT, with one of these teachers it was a quite a period of time before the child finally came clean. (the other one did in fairly short order) ** In both cases these teachers’ lives were completely ruined because of this**. Neither of them counter sued but, let me tell you, given the circumstances, I think I would have. If only as a deterrent to future kids who just want revenge. Revenge for a bad grade and perceived unfair treatment were the motivating factor in both of these cases.

My stepdaughter, a very troubled young girl when I first met her, also made such an accusation against a junior highschool teacher who was and is a very dedicated teacher, a wonderful family man, good father to his own children and a leader in the community. She recanted after only a few weeks, but meanwhile, his life and the lives of countless others were very dramatically and negatively affected. People who jumped on the bandwagon to villify him were never able to rebuild trust and many, to this day still view the teacher as guilty. My stepdaughter, only 12 years old and having a “crush” on this man, made up the story to pay him back for what she deemed as his rejection of her. Having seen this play out in my own family, I can tell you that the tongue is the most dangerous weapon of all time, killing faith, destroying hope and crushing love. Prayer, fasting, and speaking the truth in love are the best weapons against evil.

It is an unusual day when I have to admit that I agree with an atheist. Actually, Lynx, I think you make some very good points.

As Catholics, we have to face the reality of the horrible sin that was perpetrated in the form of child sexual abuse. Frankly, I don’t care if this occurs with ministers, Rabbis, other teachers, day care providers, etc. The fact is a Catholic Priest has a special place and role in the formation of a human soul. That was betrayed not only by the perpetrators but by those who refused to remove them from harm’s way. It would be wrong to try to minimize the guilt by transferring the blame to the victims or even the media. If we are intellectually honest, we must accord the victims and the media the same benefit of the doubt we want for our priests.

The Church, must in humility confront this sin directly. We start by not making excuses and blaming others. Of course, there will be abuses. Of course some will take advantage of the Church. That is simply the price the Church must endure.

We must remove all priests who may be guilty of hurting young people. Some priests will be falsely condemned. Wasn’t Our Lord also falsely condemned? Perhaps what is needed is some real redemptive suffering. Maybe Father Terry’s call is to suffer for the Church he loves in perfect imitation of Christ.

I often wonder how any human being could be so depraved as to hurt a child, but especially our priests. I believe that the Church is under attack, not only from the media, secular humanists and feminists but by Satan, himself. We are clearly in a spiritual war.

Cargau, ageeing with the atheist??? I read what you wrote, and I am wondering which of the things you think the Church should be doing are they NOT doing???

Nice to see the cancer that will kill the church has finally hit IN .In the end,I don’t know if the abuse happened or not but the damage has been done ,I am doubtful if these allegations are true or whether it’s jumping on the band wagon to destroy the RC church from the outside. Many people have left over the years and will not come back and now me .
