Yes, of course, but I condemn the child abuse which this girl went though as a result of being tied up. Never did Christ tie anybody up. Our using evil so that good may come about is forbidden, and child abuse is an evil.
I think the article is too vague to say the child was tied up. Restraints are often used in practice during an exorcim…well, sometimes.

The real person, for example, that the *Exorcist *was based on took a bed spring and used it as a weapon seriously wounding the priest in the face for which he had to go to the hospital.

There was once a video on the internet of a Passionist priest exorcising a girl who was 19, I think, not certain, and she was restrained. The priest has carabiners that attached to the chair as part of the restraint. These carabiner links are tested at around 600 pounds each and they were bent from someone he had exorcised before. And that was just an arm restraint.

The Catholic Church has validly been doing exorcisms for more than 2,000 years now. Not much has changed.🤷

Not sure that really qualifies as a valid source.
True enough. It is actually forbidden by the Church now for any kind of recording to take place during an exorcism. Also, I looked and I don’t think that video is still on youtube.

There still are audio recordings of the exorcism of Annelise Michele on the internet. (in German).

If anyone is sensitive to such things. I do not recommend you listen to the recording as they are very disturbing for many people.

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly". John 10:10

It’s amazing how little there is on this story out there. I googled the exorcists name. Several places pick up the story, but it’s just the same story…nothing new.

I agree the story is pretty thin, but I don’t see it biased against the church. It’s interesting that the exoecist told the parents the doctor was over medicating the girl. That’s what is going to get him in trouble, unless he is doctor too.

I am glad the aunt and uncle interviened.

The article was heavily spun to make exorcism look stupid and worse. I think Spain has become pretty secular to a large degree.

I just don’t see the bias that you do. After I read your post, I re-read it, and asked my wife to read it. I still didn’t. My wife didn’t either.

Well, in my view, there is bias. But I would say bias is somewhat subjective in assessment and may be differently perceived from one person to another.

I’ll cite just the very beginning sentence…

“A judge in Burgos has called for the arrest of exorcist, Jesús Hernández Sahagún, along with the girl’s priest after she went through 13 exorcisms while still a minor.”

This implies that the girl was a minor and therefore it was unlawful to have her exorcised. The parents are the guardian of the child, and if they feel this is in the best interest of the child, I don’t believe there is any illegality in such an action.

A child can be possessed just as easily as an adult. There is at least one example in Sacred Scripture- perhaps, two, I think. Additionaly, the real life event that the movie The Exorcist was based on involved a minor whose name was kept anonymous, but he was indeed a minor.

I’d rather not go through the article point by point, but demonic possession is very real, and it seems the priest did have the approval of the Bishop as it’s stated that the Bishop supports the priest in his action.

This is my take on it. You are free to disagree with me, but I see bias. Possession is very real, and it’s extremely uncharitable not to relieve the suffering of someone suffering from possession. Jesus never refused to exorcise a demon from someone who is suffering. Not once. In our modern world that tends to dismiss such actions as archaic and from the dark age, the father of lies can only be too pleased to encourage people in their disbelief.

Some scrutiny is good, but a secular institution will never be able to understand exorcism because it does not actually believe in such things.

Please read the article again. There is nothing that says the exorcist had approval of the bishop before he started.

It looks a lot more to me like it was CYA.

You are correct. I thought there was.

What does CYA mean?

…never mind, I found it. 🙂

From the article, all I can say is that it is possible that there was wrong-doing but the article gives no evidence for it.

Maybe the child abuse laws are different over there, but physically restraining a young teen would probably be deemed abuse here in the US. The only exception would be if the person was in danger of harming himself or others.

From Fox News.

Interesting choice of words, “hire” and exorcist. Do you look that up on Angie’s List?

There is conflicting info on when she made the suicide attempt. The previous article has a statement from the bishop that the suicide attempt was prior to the exorcisms. This article made it sound like it was after or sometime between one of the 13 exorcisms.
There were plenty of interesting words chosen. It never says whether or not the exorcism was successful. The exorcisms were in 2012. How is she now? The story could be an example of God’s power over Satan. They don’t tell us that part.

Why the big red 13? Believing that 13 is unlucky is superstitious.

In at least one of the articles there is a quote from the parents that they believe the girl is now “sane”. Again an interesting choice of words. I believe she is 21 now.

I emphasized the 13 to point out how many times they tied the girl up.

I agree it we need to be careful to not let the state take control of our religious practices, but this priest has done more harm than good in that regard. He took and emotionally troubled adolescent and tied her up, not only once, but 13 times. I am glad the aunt and uncle had the sense to intervene.

It will be interesting to see the rest of the details as they emerge (hopefully they will).

I don’t know why that number needed emphasis. 13 is not a particularly large number of exorcisms. The afflicted often need to be restrained during the ritual. It’s also not clear what harm was done to the girl - Especially to say that the harm outweighs the good of casting out a possessing demon.

I think that the priest and Catholic Church should be
exonerated, since it was the PARENT’S will that the
exorcisms take place. The girl was UNDER the age
of 18 and still under the authority of her parents,
so “honor your father and mother” as the command-
ment goes…

I have my PhD in research psychology and have actually seen someone having to be subdued and restrained. I would probably have a panic attack if it happened to me.
I know parents of autistic kids who have to put their kids in body holds on a regular basis so they don’t hurt themselves or others when they throw tantrums. IF you have a phd in psychology, you must be aware how common this is.
