Priest Doesn’t Like Mother Angelica?

I have run into many priests who don’t care for Mother Angelica or EWTN.

And, I can assure you, there are many in the Catholic hierarchy who would be very pleased to see EWTN disappear.

The reason, put simply, is that EWTN is orthodox/conservative, and they are not.
*When I was young I lived under fascism and I became a revolutionary and at one time had sympathies for communism. One day an Englishman said to me something like this “A conservative at 20 has no heart and a socialist at 40 has no head”. I never forgot that and after 27 years when I returned to the Church and got to know and understand my Faith I am proud to say that I feel that one cannot compromise when it comes to Faith and if this makes me orthodox/conservative then so be it!

My wife and I left our parish - I had been going there for almost ten years and we were married there - because the recently transferred parish priest was very rude to my wife when she asked to put EWTN television brochures in the entrance to the church with the other pamphlets. Rarely did anyone take a pamphlet anyway.

We left and I said I will not return to that church. In ever bothered to tell anyone I left. The envelopes I received in the mail were shredded until they no longer came.

In our present parish, Mike Aquilina is a parishoner. Therefore, there is no “EWTN” problem.

*I would have left also. What kind of priest; what kind of person would reject EWTN and Mother Angelica!!! All that fruit! All that truth! So beautiful and so exciting. My husband and I have grown in the Faith due to the exposure of EWTN. My husband is a convert from atheism.

I would report such a priest to the Bishop (hmmm…what if?)

I have to agree with PattiDay in that we shouldn’t read too much into the Priest’s words. I also think it is vitally important not to judge others because their opinions on matters other than faith and morals is at opposition with ours. Liking Mother Angelica television shows is not essential to our salvation :).
I also agree.

I’m sure that many that do not like Mother Angelica and/or EWTN do so because of the “conservative” and/or “traditional” reputation, but, on an individual basis, we shouldn’t rashly jump to that conclusion. Sometimes, one person just rubs another the wrong way. I have seen this many times within the Church. Personality differences can do that. I’m sure there are even posters here at CAF that we may agree with, but they still rub us the wrong way from time to time. 😉

Emily, I wouldn’t make too many assumptions about the priest’s being liberal, or not being faithful to the Magesterium, or not liking the Pope, or hating Blessed Mother Teresa simply because he got up and left the room. Maybe, as Catsrus notes in his post, Mother Angelica just doesn’t appeal to him on a personal level. Or maybe he just had something else he needed to do.
That was my take on it, too, that it was an innocuous statement that the priest had other things to attend to, and wasn’t meant as a slight in any way.

I know this will sound weird, but doesn’t she look adorable? I just want to give her a big hug. I have a soft spot for old people, I guess.
Not weird at all - I think Mother is as cute as a button! 👍

I am sorry, like you that I didnt ‘discover’ her until after she had her stroke-I am just thankful for her work.

She has brought many back to the church which the priests should be thankful for 🤷

*A priest once referred to Mother Angelica, in conversation, as that b i t c h!!!

I didn’t speak to him for a long time and then he was transferred which made it easy not to look at him!!!

:eek: I would definitely be disturbed to hear such obscene speech coming out of a priest’s mouth.

she shook people up I hope another like her comes along but I am not so sure

the fact that ewtn keeps her shows on is a good thing-more powerful than we know -but SHE knew how powerful her message was…i am sure

I love watching Mother Angelica’s shows on EWTN - and I love her book “Answers, Not Promises”. I suspect that some Priests do not like her because she was a force to be reckoned with and was not the type to back down from a challenge. Some people just have a problem with women taking on non-traditional roles or making a stand for something they believe to be true.

Priests are often softies that HATE getting drawn into personal conflicts. Let’s face it, it is very tempting to use the pulpit to say things that will make people feel good about themselves as they are rather than to exhort them to become MORE than they currently are.

I’ve found that this kind of priest despises people like Mother Angelica. She places her convictions and principles first and speaks bluntly to her listeners about what is RIGHT and what is wrong, regardless of the fact that many people will be bothered by it.

To a certain extent, every priest knows he is called to be a prophet (one who speaks truth, popular or not). I think many who dislike her are simply ashamed of how her courage and steadfastness makes THEM look.

Priest Doesn’t Like Mother Angelica?

I was lapsed for a long time and came back almost two years ago. EWTN, which ended up on our cable box strictly by accident when ordering the cartoon package, was a major force in my return and the subsequent conversion of my Jewish wife.

I am a grade A cynic, but the reruns of Mother Angelica Live went straight to my heart and soul. We have all Raymond Arroyo’s books on Mother and our favorite is her Private And Pity Lessons From the Scriptures. God was clearly working through this woman as she built a world-wide Catholic television network out of nothing and a massive shrine to The Blessed Sacrament in the middle of the Evangelical bible belt. We truly believe Mother Angelica to be the saint of our time.

What’s not to like? Well the other day my wife was in the parish office talking with a couple of the office people and one of the priests. Everyone was having a nice time when one of the ladies in the office asked about my wife’s conversion. When she mentioned Mother Angelica, the priest abruptly straightened up and said “with that, I am going to leave you”. Off he went leaving everyone’s mouths hanging open.

Is there something we don’t know about Mother Angelica?
There could be soooo much more to the situation than you are aware. Did the office people say the priest doesn’t like Mother Angelica or are you basing your conclusion just on the priest getting up and leaving? Maybe one of the office people doesn’t like Mother Angelica and has gotten into a debate with the priest. But I’d be careful talking to other parishoners on this subject and causing them to come to the same conclusion you have unless you have first hand knowledge that the priest doesn’t like Mother Angelica. Its gossip otherwise.

*Is it not one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy “To admonish the sinner”. So Mother Angelica was doing just that. It is not easy but it is right no matter what people might think. She was in a special role as the head of the TV station. I suppose we should all admonish the sinner - if we see someone on a “spiritual precipice” should we not warn them …gently.

:clapping:I love Mother Angelica :love:I love Mother Angelica:love:

*Wise words indeed. We should always give the benefit of the doubt because we could jump to conclusions and spread rumour and untruths and this is a sin.:yup:🤷👍

We also need to pray for our priests. They have to struggle in a world gone mad.

Back in 1997 Mother Angelica accused Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles of denying the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. That touched off a public fued between the two. This is probably what sparked the response from the priest. Many Catholics supported Mother and Many supported Cardinal Mahony. It was a sad thing. 😦
I don’t care if it’s Mother Theresa or not. No lay person or religious should be accusing a Cardinal of something like this. It does not make his Masses or confessions or any other work invalid, it just causes a lot of division and doubt.

I hope you realize it was Mother Angelica – not Mother Teresa – who said those things. 😉

Whoops, I thought I had read Theresa! Still, I don’t think it is proper for a person who is not a priest to openly criticize a priest on these matters.

*It’s sad but true: Some folks are “just too Catholic” for todays catholics [smal “c” intended.:o

EWTN and Mother in particualr reflect what we Catholics are to live in Piety, holinees, humility an COMPLETE obediene to the Holy Father and the Magisterium.

This is simply more than many can [freely choose to] accept.

Seek truth than LIVE IT!

Being a priest or Bishop, or religious does not automatically make one a Saint or a saint. In fact more is expected of them fo the extra graces God bestows on them.

Love and prayers,
Pat**
