I agree with you a 100%! I Love Mother Angelica but she was wrong for calling out Cardinal Mahony the way she did. I cant imagine saints like Francis of Assisi critizing the clergy like she did.
I don’t think so. St. Catherine of Siena (a Doctor of the Church) wrote to the pope in Avignon and told him, “You stink!” She nagged him to go back to Rome and he did! She was right. 👍

Priests, bishops, cardinals who are wrong and who violate the rights of lay people need to be called out with a prophetic voice. Otherwise we end up with a hollow, dead, empty church of compromise–the “sheep without a shepherd” wandering lost, as prophesied in the OT.

I should have bookmarked it–Pope Benedict XVI gave an address in December that was a prophetic word–not future-forecasting per se but telling it like it is, with courage and that wonderful gentle Bavarian loving spirit that he has.

He described the difference between the devotional church and the administrative church. The latter is a privileged caste and looks down on the devotional church, even as they count on their converted hearts and sacrificial tithing to make their living. B16 put himself on the side of the devotional church and called for the bureaucratic administrative privileged caste to deeper conversion. 👍

I thought that was awesome–and true. I worked for a diocesan college for 4 years and saw the privileged caste functioning up close and personal and it was disgusting and hurt my faith.

I wish I bookmarked this!!! It was so great.

He out-Mothered Mother Angelica!!!

BTW Pope John Paul II the Great LOVED Mother Angelica and lined up property and multi-million dollar donors for her expansion to cover the globe. He knew he needed her media to get the faith’s true voice out to the people because the bureaucratic administrative privileged caste was keeping it from the people.

*What I love so much about the Catholic Church is that she will never compromise truth and this costs her. People hate and criticize the Church precisely because she stands firm. “The Church needs to keep up with the 21st century” my Parish Priest said. I went and asked him what he meant by that and he mumbled something about getting the laity involved.

We all know the laity has never been more involved as in our times. The truth is that this priest (he is 80 and very ill at the moment) has been Parish Priest of a very “wealthy Parish” for about 30 or more years and he is spoilt rotten. I aim to find out how many vocations have come out of our parish in these past 30 years. I know of a Parish about 18 kms away that have had 15 vocations in the past 40 years. Our Priest has complained that there are no vocations and that one day we will have no Priest. I do believe that vocations come from example and good catechesis (spelling!) and good Catholic families. If parents do not know their Faith well then the children will not know their faith. Even the Convent schools - they have a duty to teach the faith well.

EWTN has played an enormous part in teaching the Faith. I am sure many vocations and conversions have come about because of EWTN.

Anyway we now have an Assistant Priest and he is a dream. He was ordained a year ago and is very orthodox and has won the hearts of many parishioners. He wears his priestly garb (cossak and black suit) while our Parish Priest continues with his open neck shirt and chinos. Our Parish Priest has often made some important commentaries but he has also said some things which have left me shaking my head.

We get EWTN by buying a dish and modem and the supplier has tried to get it accepted on the local cable network (where there are Protestant programmes) but it has been a hard battle. Perhaps one day it will come about because the exposure would be extremely important.

I love Mother Angelica. I recently started watching her classic episodes on EWTN. At first, she didn’t impress me like Father Corapi does but once I listened to her, I wanted to hear more. Jesus loves his “little ones”. That a little humble yet outspoken nun would start a worldwide TV network is just awesome. I read that many Catholic bishops didn’t like her because she stood up to them. Remember Padre Pio was also hated by some church officials in his day. The world loves its own and hates those that belong to Christ. We should all pray for Mother Angelica.

Mother Angelica is the one of the smartest women ever.

I even made a forum for her. Love her!

Yes i understand his history and i know there is some controversy there and Cardinal Mahony bashing seems quite popular these days but this is not a democracy where we can impeach a Bishop or critize him like a president. We must humbly accept the authority of the Cardinal and pray for him. God allowed him to be bishop ( I live in the LA archdiocese) and we must respect the office he holds.
Agreed. I don’t agree with everything he’s doing, but he is the Ordinary where I live and will give him the respect and obedience due him as a Prince of the Church.

The priests of the Temple didn’t like what Jesus had to say, either. We know what they did to Him.

Mother Angelica pulls no punches, and is not afraid to call an error when she sees it. Score a point for honesty.👍

Years ago, when I came back to the church and mentioned her, I got a stern response from a deacon who brushed me off with " I don’t like her" and silience from others. One kinder priest just said “EWTN has brought back many people, left her out singlarly”

Wow this thread is a little disturbing. I almost wish I didn’t see it. But I guess this is one of the times when the truth hurts. 🤷

I still think in a church run by men, a woman like Mother Angelica, who did so much with other holy women, is still a little annoying to the egos of men, whether they can help it or not. If a man did what she did, please, it would be celebrated all the time.

We were just informed that this fall, there will be a new radio station beginning on FM in our area… This is a first for us, and will relieve the constant flow of the sometimes anti Catholic garbage coming from a couple of other radio stations…They will be carrying a lot of EWTN programming and local happeings in our churches within the county area…Without Mother Angelica, this would not be possible…She is a modern day saint IMO, and please pray for the success of our new radio station, WRRO-FM…

I love her. She was instrumental in teaching me the faith. I pray for her recovery and good health. The first priest I talked to about coming into the church did not like her. I told him how I had been laid up with flu and had watched her for many weeks while I was off work sick. He said, “well, if you’re coming into the churchk, I will have to talk to you first about Mother Angelica – she is far too conservative.”

hahahaha – now many years later I am Catholic in the parish where I talked to that priest…and when I asked about him, my godmother told me he is no longer in the priesthood.

The parish now has a very conservative and wonderful priest who is superglued to the Pope’s teachings and the magistirium. That I’m very thankful for.

Mother always said, look at the fruits…her station, and if you read her book, it’s facinating how it came about, was in God’s hands.
She was’n’t perfect, sometimes was a bit harsh as she got older (I think she was having mini strokes toward the end) but always faithful.

I have only had priests and deacons act a bit put off but not secular men and women. I still think a lot of it has to do with just power and that this little woman did so much.
Mother Theresa was powerful too but as she told Mother,“we are different you and I, each serving the Lord in our own way”. The Pope loved her too and if that “ruffles feathers” in a few rectories or priories, so be it. If they really watched her and read her books, they wouldn’t think that way.

Good to see this thread is still active…last night I started my evening off watching a hockey game, I got bored with it then watched two of Mothers most recent shows on EWTN’s youtube channel…lol…I enjoyed that alot more…she is a big reason I’ve returned to the faith a few years ago.

She was part of the reason for me too…all that nagging over the years…and then Pope John Paul ll died and something happened, I got off the fence and his grace and her teaching and love, it came together.

So phooey on the naysayers…fruit comes from good things.
