Sure, no problem studying different religions, but there is a problem if we start practicing aspects of another religion.

Here is a a decent overview of relativism (from the article “Truth Demands Charity–Not Mere Tolerance”): catholic.com/magazine/articles/truth-demands-charity%E2%80%94not-mere-tolerance

That’s not true according to the priest’s statement. (Check the link to the statement that mystagogia posted.) The priest stated that he did try to speak with the woman, but she made the announcement minutes before the service began, and when he tried to follow her (apparently to attempt to speak with her), her lover was blocking the door.
Now that I have read the priest’s statement, I have a new presprective and view of this story. I’ll give both sides the benifit of the doubt, and I trust both sides of the story…However, what troubles me is why would the lover of Barbara block or even prevent the priest from talking to Barbara…I mean, how would the lover even know what the priest was going to talk to her about. Why would the lover block his way. It just doesnt make sense. The priest could of wanted to talk about the logitics of the funeral such as who was going to do the readings, bring the gifts up, etc… So, I’m very troubled by this.

Obviously the mainstream Media jumped the gun, however, she seemed very truthfull when she was being interviewed, she even said she wasnt against the Church and didnt want to do anything to hurt it…so there is a lot of confusion…I think the priest and Barbara should have a sit down talk to settle the confusion.

I mentioned that I help out at funerals at my Parish… The priest always states that only Catholic in the State of Grace can recieve Holy Communion…So I honestly, don’t know what to think now, but I’ll have an open mind about this…

I beg your pardon but the human being to be murdered need not be legally viable outside the womb. Abortion is murder, plain and simple. There does not need to be malice aforethought to constitute murder. It only needs to be intentional. Please do not misrepresent Catholic Church teaching. Murder is a grave sin that should be avoided at all costs.

I highly suggest that you, as a college student, purchase a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, that you study it systematically, and that you evaluate your own beliefs in light of the infallible teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church of which you claim to be a member.
I should of been more specific, I was speaking from a criminal law prespective. I was using text right out of my $200 Criminal Law textbook. I was not speaking from a theological standpoint. I was using language that I was thought in a Criminal Law Class, not a Theological Class.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe Abortion is wrong, immoral, and destroies life. I hate and despise abortion but I don’t belive I should be imposing my personal beliefs on law and public policy. I belive morality and legality are two seperate things just as that Jesuit Priest who used to be a U.S. House of Representative believed. That Jesuit priest believed abortion was wrong but he also believed it should be legal. This is a Jesuit priest speaking here, and he is one of the good Jesuits who inspires my progressive Catholic faith.

Bunk. Murder is murder.

But why should we have murder illegal then? After all, I believe murder wrong. Just like abortion. But why don’t we legalize someone intentionally killing another person?

“I believe abortion is wrong, but it shouldnt illegall” is the same as saying “I believe abortion is wrong, but it shouldn’t be illegal” or “I think rape is wrong, but it shouldn’t be illegal.”

What doesn’t make sense to me is how she can be surprised that having a live-in lover is a problem for someone who claims to be Catholic. It seems she has no understanding whatsoever of basic Church teachings. We do know she made certain decisions that are not in line with Church teaching…it seems a bit of a stretch to believe she didn’t have any idea she was doing anything wrong.

Even a Catholic with little to know education about their faith would know at least know something regarding her lifestyle. Hell, even a non-Catholic would probally know something about Church teaching.

The priest claimed that she recieved communion from a Eucharistic Minister. So, yeah…

You can sign an online petition in support of Fr. Marcel here:

I don’t know whether the petition will help any in getting him reinstated, but he may find some public support consoling. Too bad he didn’t get more support from his diocese for doing his job.

Religious fundamentalism is the number one cause of atheism in the West in my personal opinion. I respect your comments, opinions, and views. However, I respectfully disagree with you. Jesus never mentioned homesexuality nor did he discuss birth control or abortion. Jesus told us to love on another and to treat others as you would like to be treated. He told us to do good to others. Do you think Jesus would reject himself to a homosexual? Jesus my Lord and Savior sat with the sinners and the social rejects. He hung out with the skum bags of Jewish society. Our Lord would never reject a homosexual. Is rejecting gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and trangenders a part of Christ’s teaching? Jesus loves all, and he came to die for all. To say I’m seperating myself from truth is silly and ridiculous. What is absoloute truth? Only God is absoloute truth, no man or organization can claim absoloute truth, only God. I believe Jesus would open up his arms to a Lesbian. It’s sad Christians don’t realize that.

However, I respect you and your beliefs as a conservative Christian. I expect the same from you as well.

Peace and blessings.

¡a Dios sea toda la Gloria!
Of course Jesus would (and does) open his arms to homosexuals. He loves all of us and all of us are sinners. But, He also told us, all of us, to “Go and sin no more.” Catholics don’t reject homosexuals. Catholics reject the sin of homosexual acts. Homosexuals want those acts tolerated, accepted and even embraced as normal. That is not going to happen.

I tend to have a bi-partician approach to many things. I personally believe, all Christians regardless of sin or sexual orientation should recieve Holy Communion, no questions asked. That’s my take.
Then your take is wrong.

You personally believe that? And? What about what the Church teaches? Do you know better than the Church?

By the way, around CAF, the use of the word “Hell” is usually in reference to a destination after death. Could you please stop using it the way you have? I’ve noticed it three or so times in your posts already and you just joined the forums yesterday. (I can ask that because I’m probably old enough to be your mother. 😃 )

Maybe I’m being too sympathetic towards the Gay community, but I’m glad this priest got removed from the Archdiocese. You can’t refute communion to someone just because of their sexual orientation. It is something they can’t control.
You can certainly choose to apostasize, shack up, and have illicit sex. That’s what the woman hear did, and for that reason she should’ve refrained from communion.

The only thing Fr. did wrong here was run afoul of an obscure canon law of which he was, doubtless, ignorant. Under very slightly different circumstances, (i.e., if he’d had 5 minutes to advise her to refrain from communion for her manifest, grave sins), he’d have been in the right.

And, if his report is accurate, she left the sacristy and he was prevented from following so that he could not get the details of the situation or provide such advice.

Fair enough… Btw, what does “CAF” stand for?

I respect the Church’s teaching…However, in my personal opinion, if you truly believe with your heart and gut that you’re taking in Christ, I see no problem in giving communion to them. However, more information needs to be given to people.

That’s my take.

What is progressive Catholic faith?
By embracing ones own beliefs but seperating personal beliefs from public policy and affairs. Being a strong supporter of seperation of Church and State.

Morning,

CAF stands for Catholic Answers Forums.

But, my friend, belief that the Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ is not the only criteria for receiving communion. (There’s a saying that even the devil believes Jesus is God…)

We need to be in a state of grace, as iloveangels explained so well above/yesterday.

“Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord.” (1 Cor 11:27)

How have the sacraments of Holy Communion and Reconciliation been explained to you in the past? What was your preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation like?

I’m a child of the 1990s…
Okay…if you believe you are worthy okay and if not than there you go, don’t come up for communion.

To each their own.

One can “embrace” the philosophy of Eastern Religion, but still be a good standing Christian.
This is not true and we are actually forbidden by the Church to engage in any spiritual exercise that is not Christian.
