By the way, I really don’t get the anger aimed at Megan Markle from a number of people on this thread.

I’m not British, I’m Canadian- I just took issue with your general dismissal of another culture. As far as the dole goes… as mentioned earlier in this thread Prince Harry works as an ambulance helicopter pilot.

You also didn’t really fight a war to be free of “royals”. Even in the 18th century the King had limited power. You fought a war to be free of the British Parliament and it’s power to impose taxes.

i have no anger at megan

she hit the lottery

God bless her

HARRY SEEMS LIKE A GOOD GUY; HE’S SERVED HIS NATION honorably

I WISH THE MARRIAGE ALL THE BEST

Even Princess Grace? As far as British royal titles, Meghan is the first person who is not a British citizen to receive a title so it’s not like you are even given the opportunity.
exactly what is a “princess”, anyway?
It depends a lot on whether that person is a princess royal, princess consort, dowager princess, and the country.
dumb; UK better clean up their dole; little american catholic meg is about to be receiving your handouts
Did someone have a wee on your Cheerios?

Not exactly. Her title will probably be HRH The Princess Henry, like Kate is HRH The Princess William. I don’t know about Diana, just that she lost the designation of HRH when she divorced.

That would/will only be true if the first marriage is either declared null or is dissolved (such as by Pauline Privilege if that would apply)

Still, her upcoming (although legal) marriage will not be (cannot be) a Sacrament while the husband is still living.

Just because she is a non-Catholic, that doesn’t mean that she is exempt from the Divine Law.

Unless 1 of these happens (death of spouse, declaration of nullity or dissolved) there will not be a Sacrament of Marriage.

Yes, but she won’t be referred to as “Princess Meghan” because she doesn’t have any royal blood. Diana was referred to as Diana, Princess of Wales after her divorce, but she was never called Princess Diana.

Well since the original purpose of the C of E was to facilitate divorce, I don’t see what the problem is. At least from their perspective.
Not true. The C of E didn’t allow divorce and remarriage until the 21st century

The famous reason Henry VIII left the Catholic Church was to have his marriage annulled. The Pope said no, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Cardinal Archbishop of York said yes.

Diana was never a princess ether. She was HRH The Princess Charles, Princess of Wales, but never Princess Diana (though the American media often called her that). She was Lady Diana by birth and had titles due to Charles.

Diana was “HRH Diana, Princess of Wales” while Prince Charles is “His Royal Highness The Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, Prince of Wales”

Notice who Charles has “Prince” in front of his name and Diana & Kate do not. Only a prince or princess by birth can use the title in front of their given name.

This is almost like discussing anullments; that is, complicated. They have the title of Princess but yet they don’t. :wacky:

Just to tie a knot on this: Meghan will most definitely be a princess — by marriage — as is the Duchess of Cambridge and as was the late Princess of Wales.

The question of her styles and titles is a separate one. There may be one or two here almost as old as me, who can remember when it was a general rule that women took their husbands’ names when they married. The Duke of Whatnot’s wife was the Duchess of Whatnot, Lord Thingummy’s wife was Lady Thingummy, and Mr John Smith’s wife was Mrs John Smith.

That last example (the Smiths) seems to have fallen into disuse. Nowadays Mrs Smith tends to use her own first name (and may well not use ‘Mrs’ at all).

But the rule still applies to most other ranks of person: Lord Frederick Windsor’s wife (née Sophie Winkleman) is Lady Frederick Windsor. As remarked above, the former Catherine Middleton is HRH Princess William, Duchess of Cambridge. Meghan will HRH Princess Henry (with perhaps ‘Duchess of Sussex’ added if the Queen so decides).

The question was raised in 1923, when the duke of York was about to marry Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. What would her styles be after her marriage? The day before the marriage, the king’s private secretary, Lord Stamfordham, wrote to the Home Office to ask if she would become a Princess and a Royal Highness, and how she should sign her name after her marriage. He asked the same question for the eventual marriage of the Prince of Wales.

The Home Office’s ceremonial secretary, Boyd, replied the same day, after consulting Garter, that by virtue of the custom that a wife takes the rank of her husband, she would indeed become a Royal Highness, and a Princess as well (although she would not use the title any more than her husband the duke of York), without any need for a formal document. The same answer applied, of course, to the Prince of Wales’s eventual wife (HO 144/22945).

An official announcement was made in the Times of April 28, 1923:
It is officially announced that, in accordance with the settled general rule that a wife takes the status of her husband, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on her marriage has become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York, with the status of a Princess.

No, I’m not British. I was raised w Cinderella and Prince Charming. I have family in England.
It will be sad, if it collapses. I’m not fond of Charles and Camilla.,
Tweedlealice
Happy New Year and God bless.

Hmm…like I said…to facilitate a divorce.

“meagahn” needs a job in UK; is she even visa eligible for one there?
Since Harry has a title, she probably has to have one, too. Oh, she has a “job.” Endless rounds of personal appearances, charity dinners, walkabouts, etc., and most of them sans Harry! Did you notice all the work Diana was doing for the Queen, even after her divorce from Charles? Sure, it’s nice to never have to worry about money, but I can’t understand why anyone would want the boring job of a “royal.”

Although Diana was allowed to keep the title, technically, Camilla is the Princess of Wales and has been since she married the Prince. And though she says she will not use the title of queen, technically, when Charles ascends the throne, Camilla will be Queen of England and Kate will be the new Princess of Wales to William’s Prince.

Adam - yes and no

As with everything else in the Protestant revolt, it was really about Papal Authority.

Currently, Harry only has a Title from birth - Prince Henry of Wales.

Harry doesn’t have a Suffix, only a Prefix. The wife of a Princes does not receive a prefix from their marriage, only the Suffix.

That’s why Prince William was made Duke of Cambridge a few days before his wedding, so Kate would have her own title: Duchess. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have her own title.

She is Duchess Katherine and will be eventually Queen Katherine, but will never be Princess Katherine unless her Father-in-law makes her a Princess when he’s king - which is doubtful.

Same will be with Megan.

the “royalty” thing bugs me; americans shouldn’t take "TITLES’; especialy ones we
I find the whole “royalty” thing a bit outlandish, too. Most of the British have a hard time scraping by, but don’t care if their hard-earned tax money is used to keep these people in all their elegance and finery, catering to their every whim. Didn’t the US fight a revolution, and win, to free people from such silliness?

Still, I’ll admit, I like looking at the dresses and hairstyles. I wouldn’t bother to get up and look out the window, however, if a “princess” came walking down my street. I’m not that curious! LOL
