patheos.com/blogs/warrenthrockmorton/2015/03/04/former-president-of-exodus-international-says-being-gay-is-not-a-choice/

Exodus International shut down and admits all the pain they caused gay individuals over the years. They admit being gay is not a choice that can be changed. The longer we as Catholics continue this myth the more we continue to hurt gay individuals.

I do believe it is true that some people choose to be gay. For example, a volunteer at a battered women’s shelter told me that many of the women are now lesbians. I can understand why if they were abused by men their whole life. That makes sense. In these cases they need therapy. But to say being gay is ALWAYS a choice someone makes is wrong.

The gay and bisexual imates do. The straight ones don’t. Straight men do not have sexual relations with men.
Just to clarify, straight men don’t have sexual relations with men because straight men don’t have sexual relations with men?

Yes. What’s so hard to understand about that? And I’m not asking you, in particular, but like I stated earlier–this argument rages all the time on another forum and it gets frustrating because a lot of people (particularly gay men) refuse to believe that straight means straight.

If I never, ever, even once in my life had a same-sex experience, and never, ever, even once in my life wanted to have a same sex experience, what else would I be but straight? What should I call myself?

It baffles me that people don’t get this.

Perhaps what baffles you is your misunderstanding of sexual arousal and orientation. It is not the sexual act that determines sexual orientation it is the innate desire(cause unknown) that determines orientation. A gay man who has never had a same sex experience, marries and has children is still gay and not straight. If you have no desires for same sex then there should be nothing to be frustrated about, if someone does not believe you then it is their problem, not yours.

In that case, I’ll explain it differently so you don’t misunderstand me. I am straight because I have no desire to have sex or psycho-emotional intimacy with men.

What frustrates me is that people refuse to believe that straight men exist, and they insinuate that straight men are lying to themselves.

Nothing, I just wanted to reify that circular logic works because circular logic works.

Having sex with men does not necessarily mean attraction to men. Just as some gay men have found themselves in marriages with women and imagined themselves engaging in sex with men to get off so too have some heterosexual men found themselves in situations where them can only engage in sex with men and have engaged in sex imagining themselves having sex with a woman, after all there isn’t much difference between anally copulating with a man v. a woman and it is objectively pleasurable.

I’ll never know for sure, but I *think *this is completely nuts. You’re implying that all that matters to a guy is how it feels at…no…there’s no way to get further into this. It’s insulting, is what it is.

I never said that applied to all or even most men, I merely gave a factual observation.

It is disturbingly common and combined with the US prison population’s size if you counted prison rape with other rapes it gives the US the dubious distinction of being the only country where more men get raped than women every year.
What a country ,and it wants to promote it’s way of life to all .😦

(1) The more I think about it the more it seems odd: If supposed “always gay” types get married to the opposite sex, have sex with that spouse without the spouse having a good clue that maybe their husband/wife is not “into them,” raise kids up to an certain age and then “come out” I’m left to believe that their confession is dishonest - that they weren’t “always gay” but suffer from bisexuality. I mean, if you like you own sex exclusively then kissing, cuddling and have sex with the opposite should be rather unappealing if not disgusting.

(2) Did you have anal sex before to compare it to a woman’s vagina? If I were a woman I’d be rather offended that someone said my vagina, something that is made to bring life into the world, something made to give pleasure, and something to expel waste in liquid form (urine) is being compared to an organ that is made for one thing and one thing only: a one way street in order to expel fecal matter.

From what I have observed it makes me wonder. I know a woman who was married twice, has 4 children but now she is gay. I don’t know what happened since I haven’t talked to her about it but it makes a person wonder. Maybe everyone is different but if you are straight most of your life and turn gay in older age it sure looks like a choice at sometime or other.

I would be interested to see how many gay people actually chose the lifestyle because, for whatever reason. they had traumas with the opposite sex that made sexual intimacy impossible.

A woman I went to college with had a few long-term relationships with men she dearly loved but ultimately fell apart in tragic ways. A few years later she is in New Zealand with a lesbian lover.

A horribly awkward guy who used to go to bible study used to flirt with all the girls, and would get nowhere. He had that iffy “creeper” vibe around him. A couple years later he left the Church and, by his own admission, goes to Gay bars for let’s just call them not-so-holy reasons.

While I have no doubts that genetics play a strong role, I would also contend a lot of sexuality is based on “what’s available”, and a person veering on the fence, or with a weak sense of identity, can be swayed.

  1. They may have found themselves trapped and with little recourse other than continue the masquerade
2a) I’m a virginal young woman
2b) Urine doesn’t come out of your vagina, use a mirror and look closer.
2c) I actually compared sex with a man’s anus v. sex with a woman’s anus which are rather similar and both are pleasurable to the penetrator due to the tightness of the orifice

I have no idea.

I’ve seen interviews with prison rapists and they definitely do not consider themselves homosexual. In fact, they’re utterly surprised and shocked at the question. It makes no sense, but they differentiate between themselves having sexual intercourse with males and with men who are gay. It makes no sense, but it’s my understanding that’s just how it is in prison. Many aspects of human sexuality are social constructs anyway, so I guess one way to look at it is that convicts have simply taken it much further. Human beings are capable of all manner of bizarre mental gymnastics.

To the prison rapists it is about power, control and getting off, not because they are attracted to men in particular.

It is only confusing if you don’t understand human sexuality.

I’ve never bought that whole “it’s all about power” theory of rape. In my view, it’s all about sex, with strong elements of sadism thrown in the mix. I think that’s true of men who rape women as well, by the way.

I don’t think that is is all about power, indeed I explicitly mentioned “getting off”, but I do think that in many situations such as prison that dominance has a big part to play, just like in animals.

I remember reading a long time ago in The Chronicle of Higher Education that in Latin American cultures there is a similar view of sexuality. Men who have strong dominant personalities (i.e. macho men) may engage in same sex acts with ‘gay’ men. So long as the macho heterosexual man maintains the ‘dominant’ role, he is socially accepted as a straight man. The underlying belief is that a macho man cannot deny his sexual urges and is therefore not faulted for acting on them. I don’t know how accurate this description is.

From my perspective…it is what it is. Straight men don’t go there.

Some of the opinions on this thread make my skin crawl.

The level of ignorance of basic human biology and psychology is frightening.
