psst
your replacement birth rate is under 2.1 (ours is too if you subtract immigration)
your population is aging like Japan’s.
Pssssst. At least ours live to be old. Besides, we only have an aging population because of advances in healthcare and also - free healthcare for everyone no matter who they are and how much money they have! I’m proud to have an aging population. Doesn’t mean we’re all old though and unable to have kids.

What’s that supposed to mean? 🤷
Europeans are reproducing below population replacement levels, so you would think abortion would be on the public’s radar but it’s not. If Europe is going to have a future, it needs more baby Europeans, not fewer.

Nothing would make me happier than to be proved wrong, by the way. I take no pleasure in contemplating the disappearance of Europe. I think it would be a disaster for the human race.

Pssssssst. Our birth rate isn’t 0, nor has it gone down recently. We’re also just as numerous as you Americans.
No but the replacement rate is 2 and the average reproduction rate in Europe is 1.2 (I believe). I don’t think abortion is the sole reason why this is so (look at Ireland which does not allow abortion but has similar demographic woes to the rest of Europe) but widespread acceptance of abortion certainly doesn’t help grow the population.
And if you’re going to say things like that, I could say that Americans are getting easier and easier to find because of their increasing waist size. It’s a fact, but its unnessary and I apologize for it in advance. But I’m proving a point.
True, but kind of a separate issue. Europeans are getting fatter too, unfortunately.

That implies we’d care about abortion on the basis of reducing our population. MUST BREED MORE!

No. No one actually cares about the birth rates. For an American you’re talking like a socialist, saying we need to be concerned about our population levels when we’re struggling with the levels of immigration. 🤷

Abortion is absolutely morally wrong but on top of that its widespread acceptance is contributing to other worrying long-term trends in Europe. That’s all I’m saying.

I’m not sure how I sound like a socialist; I’m just voicing concerns about the long-term future of Europe. It worries me as a Europhile, as someone who cares about Western civilization generally and as an American. I think Europe has been making its secularist, culture of death bed for a long time now and is going to have to lie in it shortly but that doesn’t make me particularly joyful or optimistic about the future for my own country.

I’d just like to say that we don’t have major socialist parties. What is it with Americans been obsessed with socialism - as if its as worse than their democractic system. There’s never been a true socialist state by the way.

In the UK, all of our parties are pretty much in the centre and are trying to appeal to everyone. Same for many other European countries. Since everyone got the vote, all the parties have been trying to appeal to everyone at once and we’re a mixed bunch over here in the UK at least.
You guys are like the fish in water - it doesn’t know it’s wet. Of course you are socialist! The government nanny state is your overlord! It’s a big reason why churches are in such decline - socialism is atheist and kills religion by substituting government programs for charity and altruism.

Not meant as an attack on you individually, and I know you are bound to want to defend yourself but we’ve been hearing how great European socialism is for decades now and we are frankly quite fed up with it. We left Europe and most of us don’t want to pretend we’re going back at this point!

😃

Excuse me, but when I started this thread, I was honestly wondering whether or not people in other countries spent time arguing about “pro-choice” versus “pro-life” when they were having an election. I also wondered if their priests warn them to vote “pro-life.”

Calling a European a socialist is very rude! It has nothing to do with the purpose of this thread.

Actually, I was hoping that only people from non-USA countries would post here. If you grew up in another country and are living in the USA, that is fine, too.

Correct.👍

I live in the U.S., but I lived in Europe many years ago----- and I can tell you the issue of Socialism IS relevant to this discussion-----since Socialistic policies, which have become THE Norm in Europe, ARE one of the reasons for the Low Birth Rates in Europe and the “graying” of the Population. Birth Control (Population Control) and Abortion (Another Type Of Population Control) are BIG Socialistic issues. 👍

Ireland has had a few votes on changing the constitution on abortion the last one was so complicated that both pro and anti abortion camps voted for and against it. it allows abortion in certain cases.
many irish women travel every year to have an abortion in the uk.
in the last referendum on eureope, the lisbon treaty the Irish people voted against it so they made us vote again, one of the promises the second time was that we not be forced into accepting abortion, but that has yet to be tested, and no doubt it will eventually end up in the courts. the language is so vague in it, that it depends on who is reading it as to what it actually means.

Here in the UK no one ever asks. Religion isn’t even considored important, a politician is never going to be asked on their moral/religious beliefs.

It’s legal to have an abortion anywhere in the UK, and its very unlikely to be changed any time soon. If a politician did say they were pro-life, I have a feeling they would lose a lot of the vote. Not because of the individual beliefs of the voter, but because in the UK we have a strong feeling of democracy and think everyone should have the right to everything.

The pro-life movement in the UK is pathetic compared to the USA to be honest.
We recently had the 40 Days for Life campaign in London which followed similar anti-abortion campaigns in the US i.e. we held prayer vigils on the pavement in Marylebone where Marie Stopes is located. It was the first time that a pro-life group has targeted MS in that manner.

It’s not the first time, ‘Rescue America’ tried it in the early 90’s in London.

There are still some good people in Europe:

But monsters are destroying the beauty that Europe once had.

Pro-lifers in Spain assaulted while collecting signatures against abortion
Madrid, Spain, Apr 28, 2009 / 03:24 pm (CNA).- On Saturday, April 25, three volunteers of the Right to Life organization and a Chilean in the town of El Ferrol were victims a brutal assault by a group of seven young people who attacked them as they were collecting signatures against the law on abortion sponsored by the Socialist government.

There is no socailist states in Europe. All of our political parties are in the centre-right, not left. A basic knowledge of Europe would tell you that. We’re not socialist. What’s your evidence? You’re being extremely rude. I notice you’re from Texas - 'nuff said. In your state you don’t even teach evolution and have twisted History - we heard about that over here. That to me is socialism - your nanny state is telling people the preferred version of events rather than giving them all the alternatives and you’re not letting people choose for themselves.

I’m proud to live in the UK. And there’s no Red Army in sight.

Yikes!
I would consider France pretty socialist, ditto Greece and Italy.

I can imagine it now - Dr. Nefarious and his evil cronies sitting in Brussels hatching a plot to allow contraception purely on the basis of reducing the population to…benefit the country and… errr. it will benfit the country by… well… its a socialist plot!

Or perhaps contraception was linked to a progressive women’s liberation movement which gained momentum after women started to finally get rights equal to men following the World Wars.

Why do you Americans see everything so black and white? It seems that if its not how you do things, its socalist!
