Pro-Life Catholics may picket the Annual Knights of Columbus Convention to be held in Washington D.C. because the group refuses to expell pro-abortion politicans from its ranks.

Any thoughts pro or con?
IMO, it’s the business of the KofC to decide how they want to handle the matter, without having to pay any attention to protesters who aren’t even Knights.

I’m no Knight, but come on. Let’s get a grip here.

The Knights do SO MUCH GOOD for everyone, including pro-lifers.

Would they also picket the Bishops for refusing to excommunicate pro-abortion politicians, would they also picket the local parishes that continue to administer communion to the pro-abortion politicians? We have no right to judge those we perceive to be sinners.

Long overdue, public scandal effects us all and is everyone’s business.

with respect, unless the bishop of the offending politician has acted publicly, neither the K of C or any other lay organization has the right to take such a public action, which de facto makes a judgement on another Catholic on matter for confession.

I’d be more interested to see what pro abortion politicians the KC “harbors”. The article is pretty short on specifics.

I’m not aware of any KofC condition for excommunication to be expelled from the order.

S we should accept evil that good may come?
Sigh.

News flash-“Perfect” is the enemy of the good. In this world where we live in, abortion won’t be banned anytime soon. Sorry, it just won’t happen. What we need to do is realize that at the very least-reducing the number of the abortions is a good and noble outcome. We can focus on banning later.

This zero sum game where we scream at our allies for not agreeing with us 100 percent will not accomplish anything, and will very soon drive people away from the pro-life cause.

I’m sorry you think Catholics holding the Catholic faith equals been perfect, just goes to show how low some peoples definition of perfect has fallen, personally I would expect that would be the minimum.

There are members of the KoC who agree with this picket, in fact they have made exactly the same request of the national leadership themselves over the same thing and I would not be surprised if some of the people doing the picketing are Knights.

I’m confused on a couple fronts.

Are you claiming that 1) yet unnamed “pro abortion politicians” are somehow dedicated to reducing the number of abortions, and/or that 2) sticking to Catholic doctrine is “screaming” at someone?

I disagree.

So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

LOL! My friend, you say, “I’m sorry I think X” You can read my mind?! Sweet! That’s pretty cool. Can you tell what I’m thinking…now? 😉

No, my point is this-A politician who agrees with me on abortion 80 percent of the time is better than one who agrees with me 0 percent of the time. So I would be very careful about who I critique.

If you can read my mind, maybe you can tell me where I lost my car keys! 👍

AND SERIOUSLY! Look at what the 1st “Resolutions of the 128th Convention” is:

kofc.org/un/eb/en/conv/2010/resolutions/index.html
**Building a Culture of Life **
Resolution on Building a Culture of Life adopted by the 128th Supreme Convention on Aug. 5, 2010.
RESOLVED, that the Knights of Columbus renew our deep and historic commitment to oppose any governmental action or policy that promotes abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and other offenses against life and that we continue to speak out to our elected representatives about the need to enact legislation to oppose these practices and to protect human life in all its stages;

How is accepting members who don’t accept the resolution NOT speaking out both sides of their mouth?

I’ve considered joining the KofC for a while now, and the only reason I haven’t are time constraints. This matters.

.
That’s not many fronts. That’s only two.
  1. No, I’m not claiming that. I’m claiming that we should be very careful in who we choose to critique. Of course, in a free country, do what you want, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to chuck rocks (metaphorically) at people who agree with us 80 percent of the time, and disagree 20. Many pro-lifers think differently, and that’s fine-free country.
  2. Sticking to Catholic doctrine is great. Knock yourself out.

FURTHER RESOLVED, that we reaffirm our long-standing policy of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event, persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the legal protection of unborn children, or who advocate the legalization of assisted suicide or euthanasia, and of prohibiting such persons from renting or otherwise using facilities over which we have control, or speaking at Knights of Columbus events, or bestowing on them honors or privileges of our Order of any kind, or inviting them to serve as honorary chairpersons of events, celebrations, or committees, or hold any office in the Knights of Columbus;…

Given the context of the article, it would have been helpful to have mentioned these public people by name, and the particular reason they are opposed to that position. Given the Knights’ resolutions at this convention, I’m wondering who these people might be, or what their level of participation in the KofC is.

Thanks for the smiley face. It’s important not to forget our sense of humor sometimes.
Well, I constantly correct my kids on their grammar, which is why I don’t have a problem when someone finds a fault in mine!

There is no active lay organization within the Catholic Church more dedicated to pro-life and acting the Catholic faith than the KofC. This whole non-issue of members of the Catholic faith not being expelled from the KofC is a tempest in a teapot.

This tempest has been around for some months now and doesn’t look like it is going away any time soon, if anything the winds are getting stronger, perhaps people are actually getting tired of all the hypocrisy, time will tell.
