Oh really! Perhaps you might like to read the official K of C policy as cited in the following:

catholicculture.org/commentary/otn.cfm?id=652

Patrick S. Korten, Vice President for Communications Knights of Columbus Supreme Council
“Since our founding by Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882, membership in the Knights has been open to Catholic men at least 18 years of age who are “practical (that is, practicing) Catholics” in union with the Holy See. We leave the determination of who is a “practical” Catholic to the Church, and do not presume to substitute our own judgment for that of the bishop of each diocese. If the bishop considers a man to be a practicing Catholic in good standing, the Order does not attempt to second-guess his decision.”
I have already read that, I and many KofC believe that Mr. Korten is wrong.

It’s OK to have a personal opinion that disagrees with policy but to undermine the K of C to push your personal point of view is counter-productive. You are doing potentially more damage than the few you are complaining about. Policy is subject to change and if enough Knights in good standing want to change a policy they can follow the prescribed petition process.

They undermine themselves.

Wow. I did not know that. Sounds like the “wide gate”, warm body approach to membership. Considering the Pelosi and Kerry-type Catholics that some bishops seem to tolerate, it might conceivably be easier to join the Knights than the Mouseketeers. And it gives me no pleasure to say that.

As it says:

If that equates to being a “Mouseketeer” to some then so be it.

Exactly what is the screening criteria to be called a practicing Catholic and Who does the screening? The clue is in the capitalized word, only He can look into a person’s soul and know the state of that soul at any moment in time. The rest of us must rely on the wisdom of our Bishops, we may disagree but as Knights we do not undermine their decisions nor do we publicly condemn them.

Those who are aghast at the pro-life KofC ought to consider the logical end of their argument, that they really ought to be picketing and condemning the Church instead, since not every member is perfect in every way.

Anyone who thinks unaccountable purges for internal ideological purity are a good idea should look at the examples in history where they were used: Stalin’s Russia, the Cultural Revolution in China, Cambodia in the 1970s, the French Revolution etc. Turning on one’s own is the best way to do your enemy’s work for you and always unleashes the ugliest instincts mankind has to offer. Once you begin purging those who you don’t feel are “Catholic enough”, where will it end? Once the purge finishes with the low-hanging fruit, the politicians who obviously aren’t on board your agenda, who will be next? Will YOU make the next cut?
