also, the title of this thread couldn’t be more true now.
You are quick to jump to conclusions and assumptions about me and what I believe, and I sense hostility, zealousness, arrogance, and mockery towards me on your part. Thus I will no longer respond to your posts.Funny how you avoided explaining the reason for why Onan was killed especially since the reason you state is not a crime punishable by death in the Old Law!
Reading something and understanding it are hardly the same thing. Did you understand it Deb?
Yes one side of the argument comes from a sound teaching authority called the Catholic Church while the other comes from the Church of Deb. Sadly the Church of Deb has zero authority in these matters and a lack of qualifications.
Thank God opinions arent fact.
No Deb your wrong because NFP is not contraception.
Your positioin that NFP is the same as contraception is ridiculous.
Unfortunately it’s not. You still have to give a valid explanation for how your fairy tale came to its conclusion.
I’m sorry to hear that, but I pretty much don’t blame you. Hopefully you will find a more positive experience with Catholicism elsewhere.uggggggh. this thread has turned tenfold into what i expected/didn’t want it to be.
i didn’t want a debate, or the holier than though responses this is full of. simply asked Biblical support of not using contraception.
and i haven’t been on here for a few days (i somehow got pneumonia in august) and after reading the first 2 pages that i am behind on, i am not going to read the last three. i have come to the conclusion that in this situation that apparently we can’t agree to disagree, i will never see it your way. and you will never see it mine, now maybe i am far too open minded, because, i don’t think that is always a bad thing. i was looking to be educated, not to be a part of a adolescent bickering. but aside from the patronization, belittling and over all anger i have sensed, i got my answer, in fact, i got some other answers i wasn’t looking for. so i guess in a way, thank you. but overall, not only have been completely turned off by Catholicism, but religion in general. it’s always the same…
Ruth, just to clarify:and this is according too…???
YOUR interpretation. my main point is, there is no scriptural backup for not using contraception.
in Deut 23:1 God condemns sterilization and those who do so will not be allowed into the assembly of the LordOnan was not punished for contraception. He was punished for being disobedient to his duties as a brother. He would have been punished just the same if he had been using NFP to avoid pregnancy with his late brother’s wife.
This is why Catholic Doctrine doesn’t reference the story of Onan anywhere in the argument against contraception.
Ouch on the pneumonia in August, a summer cold is bad enough! Here’s hoping you’re feeling better soon. I’m probably going to regret posting this too…i am sure this has been explained, but. i see lots of arguments against contraception, one argument in particular read something along the lines of, condoms are wrong, Jesus preached about it.
i am curious as too what the Biblical backup of this is.
i understand thou shalt not kill. but why is preventing so wrong?
hello RuthY,uggggggh. this thread has turned tenfold into what i expected/didn’t want it to be.

That’s not the same as abortion in some people minds. From a modern perspective, they are not equivalent, even to some Catholics. There are a number of scriptural passages that support this difference. For instance, here is a passage from Exodus:
Uhhh… thy shall not kill???
Hi Deb,That’s not the same as abortion in some people minds. From a modern perspective, they are not equivalent, even to some Catholics. There are a number of scriptural passages that support this difference. For instance, here is a passage from Exodus:
*And if men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him; *and he shall pay as the judges decide. "But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot… (Exodus 21:22-24)
It would appear the that causing death to a fetus is not a serious crime when compared to causing significant injury or death to another person.
Hi Debra,I’m sorry to hear that, but I pretty much don’t blame you. Hopefully you will find a more positive experience with Catholicism elsewhere.
I guess I should bow out of this thread before I get too involved and end up behaving in a way I will regret. You definitely don’t need to witness anymore of that type of behavior from Christians.
God Bless.
Hi Debra, (or ought I say,'Quien no Sabe, aka ‘the lone Ranger’)Nope, wrong again. No shrug.
I have read it. There are theological arguments both ways and I believe yours holds absolutely no water. It is a very big reach and quite ridiculous in my opinion. If Onan was using NFP to avoid an heir for his brother, he would have been punished just the same. End of story.
Actually all Church's taught the same till 1930, they changed, Catholicism held to the truth. All you need to do is read the Jewish Commentary on Gen 38, they are the original teachers of the Hebrew Scriptures, and the Church is in agreement with that teaching, 1900 yrs later our protestant influenced Govn't. persuaded their peers to change their minds and influence their congregations. But as Catholics we answer to a higher authority.
Here we go applying today's technology with a 3,800 yr. old biblical lesson.
How does natural family planning work?
Two methods of natural family planning are currently taught. The first is the mucus or ovulation method. In this method, the days just before and just after ovulation are determined by checking the woman’s cervical mucus. When a woman is most likely to become pregnant, the cervical mucus is stretchy, clear and slick. The mucus during this time looks and feels much like an uncooked egg white.
The second method is called the symptothermal method. With this method, the woman takes her temperature each day with a basal body temperature thermometer and writes it down on a chart. At the time of ovulation, a woman’s temperature will rise slightly (about .9°F). The woman also checks the consistency of her cervical mucus like she does with the mucus method. She may also notice other changes, such as pain in the area of the ovaries, bloating, low backache and breast tenderness.
That’s a monumental difference in 1800 yrs.In both methods, couples use a chart to keep track of the changes in the woman’s body
Still didn’t read the link, did you?
Biblically it is a sin for man to waste his seed.
This would be your opinion, not sound reasoning of Biblical words, based on Hebraic meanings… everybody has an opinion that’s why ‘sola scriptura’ does not work. Biblically and historically everyone who claimed to be a prophet had to prove that it was God who sent the message, when a prophet spoke in the name of the Lord it came to pass. Christ left a teaching authority to stand in his earthly place until His return, so we would not be like sheep without a shepherd.Nope, wrong again. No shrug.

Try this. I have heard her before. She is easy to listen to and draws good conclusions.i am sure this has been explained, but. i see lots of arguments against contraception, one argument in particular read something along the lines of, condoms are wrong, Jesus preached about it.
i am curious as too what the Biblical backup of this is.
i understand thou shalt not kill. but why is preventing so wrong?
The Bible and Birth Control by Charles D. Provan, written by a Protestant takes you through a Biblical perspective against Birth Control.i am sure this has been explained, but. i see lots of arguments against contraception, one argument in particular read something along the lines of, condoms are wrong, Jesus preached about it.
i am curious as too what the Biblical backup of this is.

Then you haven’t seen my response and you haven’t read The Bible and Birth Control by Provon, a Protestant like yourself.then what is the difference then?
and please explain what i don’t understand.
and there are several things in several churches that aren’t scriptural. too name a few:
and i really feared this would turn into a back and forth debate, hence the name of this thread, i honestly just wanted to know the scriptural back up of contraception, which i have still yet to see.
- contraception (yet to see the verse that backs it up)
- premarital sex (scripture speaks of sexual immorality but lack detail of what that is, the only mention of premarital sex is OT)
- Confession/forgiveness (scripture does not say we have to confess to a priest for forgiveness)
- Baptism (i understand that this is Biblical, however scripture does not say this is required for salvation)
You respond in many posts that you are a jew. The question is about contraception. You deny being Protestant or Orthodox, just a Jew. You asked the question you thought you would regret. I regret to ask you what your understanding of contraception is as a Jew?i am sure this has been explained, but. i see lots of arguments against contraception, one argument in particular read something along the lines of, condoms are wrong, Jesus preached about it.
i am curious as too what the Biblical backup of this is.

Now you’re playing semantics, no it doesn’t say ‘Contraception’ which is ** the deliberate prevention of conception or impregnation by any of various drugs, techniques, or devices; birth control.**then what is the difference then?
and please explain what i don’t understand.

Unconfessed sin makes our hearts hard, and guilt can carry over to bring on mental and physical ill health... confession biblically is good for the mind, body and soul.
