Prominent Catholics call on pope to oust S.F. archbishop

I just feel that an Archbishop has to have a very good skill at communicating with the population within their diocese. Considering the sizable LGBT population in SF, any Archbishop there should have to be able to communicate with gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals in an effective manner. Clearly, he isn’t doing very well at it. But his predecessor had no problems with it. The difference between the two styles is so drastic that the effects are clearly seen in the clashing that has accompanied Archbishop Cordileone.
If that’s the case, if he lacks the skill to communicate with his flock, he should acknowledge this and ask to be transferred.

"[66] And he said: Therefore did I say to you, that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father. [67] After this many of his disciples went back; and walked no more with him. [68] Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away? [69] And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. [70] And we have believed and have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of God. "

Seems we have seen this before. And I state again, Archbishop Cordileone is communicating to His flock. The issue is that some simply do not wish to hear the truth.

Hypothetically speaking, if someone identical to Pope Francis were to replace the Archbishop, would the agenda to oust him be any different?

Are people really upset about the approach or do they want someone to affirm teachings that are contrary to Church doctrine?

Exactly so! The mission is not to destroy the archbishop, but to destroy the teaching!

Actually he’s doing an excellent job of communicating with this flock. The problem is a small minority doesn’t like what it is he’s communicating .

I think Francis should, in fact, comply with the wishes to appoint a new AB for the diocese.
Cardinal Burke would be a good choice. 😃

Certainly, Catholic teaching is under attack. But in this case, it is also true that the mission is precisely to destroy the Archbishop. That’s why Sam Singer was hired. He will leave no stone unturned in pursuing that mission.

Dominican nuns in SF walk out of high school to protest gay rights group
April 22, 2015 by: Deacon Greg Kandra
From The San Francisco Chronicle:
The divisions within the Bay Area’s Catholic community over gay rights hit Marin Catholic High School full force the other day, when a group of nuns walked out of their classes to protest the sponsors of a program intended to protect gay and lesbian teens from bullying.
The five members of the Dominican Sisters of Mary order exited their classrooms Friday as students began handing out flyers at the Kentfield school promoting a nationwide Day of Silence.
Their walkout came one day after 100 prominent local Catholics attracted national attention by taking out a full-page ad in The Chronicle calling on the pope to oust Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, in part for trying to get teachers at Catholic schools to sign off on a morality clause that characterizes homosexual relations as “gravely evil.”
Marin Catholic High President Tim Navone and Principal Chris Valdez tried to put out the latest brushfire with a letter to parents about “a challenging day on our campus resulting in both students and faculty feeling confused about our mission.”
…When some Marin Catholic High students began handing out Day of Silence-related stickers and flyers on campus Friday morning, the five nuns felt “felt compromised, offended and uncomfortable,” Sister Clare Marie, one of the teachers, later wrote in a lengthy e-mail to her students.
She said the sisters “do not support bigotry or any kind of prejudice,” but that they were compelled to act out against an event promoted by a group that “believes actively in promoting homosexuality in all classrooms, K-12.”
Her e-mail also accused the group’s members of speaking out “against Christians who do not share their views” and handing out materials that “say that any church which teaches homosexuality is sinful is an ‘oppressor’ and should be opposed.”

Spokane’s new Bishop (appointed by Francis of course) seems very supportive of Archbp Cordileone:

CWR: Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco has made some highly publicized efforts to ensure the Catholic identity of his four archdiocesan high schools. The secular press in the Bay Area has been highly critical of him on this issue, as well as a variety of others. Do you think the press has been unfair to the archbishop?

Bishop Daly: Absolutely. One of the most recent issues was about a sprinkler system which sprayed the homeless at St. Mary’s Cathedral. But the issue had nothing to do with him. It was installed by a former rector.

The complaints you’re hearing about the archbishop and Catholic education are not coming from within the four archdiocesan high schools. The press is choosing to focus on a segment of a population who are within schools that are not under the control of the archbishop [there are 10 high schools in the archdiocese that are run by Catholic religious communities which the archbishop does not oversee]. But you have to ask: why are they in Catholic schools if they are not with the Church? We believe the Church has a right to teach what it does, in charity; the press is saying, “We’re going to tell you what to teach.”

CWR: The archbishop has also been criticized by local politicians.

Bishop Daly: Yes, and some of those leading the effort have been educated in Catholic schools. We’ve had no support from Catholic politicians in San Francisco.

CWR: How has the archbishop taken the media abuse?

Bishop Daly: He’s holding up, although I know it’s burdened him greatly. I saw him at a recent seminarian basketball game, and I know he enjoyed getting away and being with friends. He’s had many people offer him their support, and I know it helps.

Oh yeah, Bishop Daly is definitely supportive. He’s from the San Francisco archdiocese and he used to be the vocations director here.

Under the circumstances, I think this was great - this whole thing has taken a darker turn. It is in fact a form of intimidation. We’ll have fisticuffs in the street before long. Congrats to the Dominican Nuns.

As has been said numerous times in this thread, this is not a communication problem, it is a listening problem on the part of a very vocal minority that clearly doesn’t want to hear about Catholic teaching.

Cordileone is still the right man for the job; Benedict knew what he was doing when he put this man in Oakland and then in San Francisco.

I don’t think it was PE Benedict that arranged this appointment, but his minions that knew this would be one of their last opportunities to wreck havoc in San Francisco. The Bishop that Papa Francis appointed to be Bishop of San Diego would have been perfect since he was part of the community and has a pastoral style of governing. I certainly don’t see the AB being transferred, but I do see years in SF when little or nothing will be accomplished in that huge Diocese.🤷

Obviously not - we were told that his predecessor did a better job.
I could imagine Pope Francis doing a much better job in reconciling the various factions.

The minions were the extension of Benedict’s will.

If you see no progress in SF, whose fault will that be? Not Pelosi’s? Not the gay Catholic mafia? Sometimes one has to go into the den of vipers and do battle on their ground. San Francisco has long been a critical spiritual warfare battleground. Something that the Vatican realized awhile ago; that realization led to Cordileone’s appointment to Oakland. I think that when the Vatican sent him to Oakland, they already had him in mind for the San Francisco bishopric.

That’s a rather uncharitable thing to say about people who uphold Catholic teachings. Like Catholics are supposed to do.

Also, it doesn’t seem like you know how such appointments work. A lot more people, including those in the US and USCCB would be involved besides “Benedict’s ‘minions’”

This point is highly debatable, since there seems to be many in the diocese who are extremely upset when someone espouses Catholic teaching.

A good job a communicating entails actually getting your message across. Speaking in a way so that no one gets upset, but never actually stating your message, is not good communicating. I have no idea of the job the previous archbishop did there, but just on the face of it we can’t determine if he did a better job than the current archbishop.
