I think I get it now.
  1. Marriage is a religious institution, even if you argue that it is not native to Christianity, and the government has NO RIGHT mandating that ANY religion accept this or that, that would be a state religion and history reveals where that will lead. There are already civil unions and domestic partnership unions recognized by the state. Why do they need marriage? This almost seems like an attempt to make war on religion AND morality. I think I get it now.
  2. I also am learning that I’ve been dealing with a strong sense of uncertainty about the state of our society because I’ve not been willing to stand firm on certain issues, not because I don’t believe in the Church, but because I just couldn’t see that ANY system, in order to work, needs to have a standard. We can’t each person just do whatever we want, even if we don’t directly hurt others, because sooner or later the entire social system becomes an equalibrium that depends on itself, such as in a time of war, and when the various parts of that society are unreliable for the resources needed at that time, it will eventually fail.
A standard is not just something we make up one day because we want to play a game and have some fun. It’s something set by life, and we learn that standard by experienceing life and learning from our misteakes. Unfortunately, we’ve thrown the experiences of our forefathers out, ironically, in the name of progress. We need responsible, disciplined and well trained leaders to run our country and keep us safe.

Here’s a question though: Do you think our society is beyond being salvaged? I’ve spoken with many, Catholic AND protestant who think we’re permenantly on the decline.

No. Social trends come in cycles. To an extent, it is always difficult to return the viewed back into the hidden, the experienced back into the untouched, but societies do react. Many major historical movements (including conservative or restrictive movements) were reactions to previous conditions or situations, including extreme conditions in many cases. It is said that the whole Islamic fundamentalist movement is in many ways a reaction to the extreme disintegration of social mores on the globe in general, but in the West in particular.
