Veritas,
We use the Seton Religion series at home. It has a Religion text book and Baltimore Catechism and Bible History. The text explains the WHY in more detail and goes with the B.C. For example, today we discussed the 3rd commandment of the Church, to confess our sins at least once a year. The text book went into great detail why we should go more often than that, that once a year is just the minimum. It gave the example as the sacrament being like a pipe to carry water to our souls (grace), which we would want to do as often as we can. I also liked the part where we gain self-knowledge from frequenting the sacrament. This is just 5th grade!
This may not be ideal for a parish setting because of the length and depth but it is superior to any that I have seen so far.

Thank you for that recommendation. If I can’t adapt that to a CCD setting, I might use that at home. I’m not very impressed with the faith formation program at our parish as far as content goes, and I’ve been thinking about teaching my kids at home as well, but I wasn’t sure how to go about that in an organized way.

Actually I do use some of the stories and examples from the Seton Religion text in my CCD class. Also, the B.C. is a great tool to use in Q & A type of games to reinforce our faith. 🙂
