Prophesey and speaking in tounges

I wonder if a prophet in the Protestant denominations can be considered the same as mystic in the Catholicism?

Mystics seem though to experience more than just prophecy. Some have the Sigmata, or hear angels sing. others have seen apparations of Mother Mary, Angels or Jesus Himself.

Many do have visions and/or dreams that are prophetic, or hear angels sing or Jesus speak… I don’t know of claims of Stigmata among protestants though, now that you mention it.

1. When the pastor prays he speaks in a laungage that sounds like Hebrew and you can easliy repeat what he says. I thought when a person speaks in tounges it sounds like a unknown foriegn laungage that you cannot understand. Is this true? or is he just praying in Hebrew?

Back in the 70s, when I was in college, I did a paper on the Catholic Charismatic movement for an anthropology of religion class. In the paper I had 107 references to people praying in a language that they could not understand but someone else present could. One person was mute but prayed in German.

I also know a priest who, after praying in tongues, was approached by a woman who identified them as Polish and Russian. Later the pries had to learn to speak these languages and his prayer language shifted to another one. (As far as I know the new language has never been identified.)

After reading the post about hearing Angels singing, I wish to tell a story about my father; when he was a young man in the 30’s in Saskatchewan, he was working in the field during harvest, at approx 3 PM he went into a granary to have a break, it was quiet, he was eating, when he said he heard a beautiful sound, like a choir of Angels singing. When he arrived at the homeplace farm, his mother informed him that his Aunt was backed over and killed at approx 3 PM that day. Funny, he didn’t tell anybody this until in his 70’s, you would think he would have, being gone through WW2, and all the ugly things he seen, he would have mentioned this beautiful memory before, but not until Christmas a few years ago.

When you first time saw a Marian apparition; how did you recognize that it was Mary in reality? Did you see her in a dream or you were awake?

I went to a service and a prayer meeting. I felt very uncomfortable by what was going on. The pastors wife is a prophetess, and a healer. They encourage speaking in tounges as well. I guess these questons are for Pentacostals or anybody that knows anything about this subject.

1. Can Prohets prophesy about anything ? Can their prophesys be extremly general such as saying that they prophesy that the crooked paths are going to be made straight or telling someone that they are going to have dreams in the future and to come in and talk to prophet to interpret?

This type of manifestations also exists among Catholics, at least in France, I don’t know in the USA : they belong to Catholic charismatic movements that are recognized by the Vatican …
so why does it bother you when it’s “Pentecostal” ( charismatic Protestants we could say ) and not when it’s Catholic ? I don’t see any difference ( I don’t belong to this trend )

Just turn on any Protestant channel on television and see them jumping all over the place, clapping and ranting about how you can be saved. That’s how I know. I have never ever seen Protestants in quiet holiness praying on their knees. It’s always been like an assembly or something. Like an auditorium.

So, have you been in people’s bedrooms at night when they pray or in the mornings before going to work? church services/gatherings are public worship times with singing and preaching. Prayer is usually done in one’s personal time apart from public worship.

And you’ve certainly never been in my bedroom (i hope) when I get on my knees and pray the Rosary or St. Michael chaplet. Think about your posts before you publish them. It makes you look…not so good to make assumptions about things for which you cannot give evidence for.

Penticostals are not a differant religion as referred to here. They are christians, part of the body of Christ. They are your brothers and sisters in the Lord. I have a hard time understanding this attitude.

In answer to this question. A prophet will speak what the Lord gives them to speak. I also am bothered by something so general that you could take it to mean anything in your life. When one is specific it really does narrow it down to weather it is correct or that the person prophesying has missed it. One thing you need to realise is that the one prophesying may not know anything about you and is only speaking what they have seen and heard from the Lord. I have found that when it is from the Lord it will stick with you. It is always according to scripture. It will edify, comfort, and will exort you in the Lord. In most cases the Lord will already be dealing with you in this matter. The prophecy will not be compleatly forign to you. When given in a church service at times it may be in a more general tone. The Lord knows what is in us and doesent have to say things so specific that he spells it out, He respects us. Say He makes your croked paths straight. When that is said that crooked path may come to your mind and gives you a chance to deal with it without being embarresed before the whole congregation.

In answer to the second part of this question . A prophet should point you to Christ and help you to hear from Him. They should not make you depend on them to hear from the Lord for you.

One of the things about the gifts of the Holy Spirit is that there are usually several gifts working at the same time together. The word of wisdom and the word of knowledge can all be working with the gift of prophecy as well as the gift of faith. It is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. That is what the gifts of the Spirit are. He can manifest Himself in any way He chooses The Holy Spirit is looking for those who will believe and obey Him.

In acts 2 1-11 it speaks of tongues that people of different languages could understand.
In 1 corenthians 14:2 It is in a language that no man can understand

It dosent have to be the pastors wife. The Lord can use anyone who believes, including you. In mark 16:18 It says that those that believe shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. It is the Lord who does the healing not the person The Lord works through people just like us.

I read a book about a preacher that God used in the gift of healing. This man would take the crutches and other things that people had to rely on in their afflictions and hang them on the wall behind His pulpit. It was a great testimony to the things that God had done for the people It was a faith builder to those who saw them.

I hope that I answered some of your questions by what I wrote. I cannot speak for the pastor and his wife or about the service that you attended. I was not there. When I go to a church that is differant then what I am used to I try to have an open mind. There are no perfect churches or people in themselves. I just ask the Lord for understanding and I weigh all things according to scripture. This helps to keep me out of trouble.

Speaking in tongues is real.

The first sentence isn’t completely correct. Both the AoG and CoG do indeed encourage the speaking of tongues but the “requirement” part is not a tennent of those Churches but rather a rule installed by some pastors. It is required of the Church leaders. It’s not that those Churches see it as proof someone is saved or not saved but rather evidence. It is a tennent, however that to remain a pentecostal Church, at least 51% of the congregation should speak intongues (I have no idea where that rule came from). St. Paul asks the retorical question: (Do all speak in tongues?) when explaining the Body.
I cut the above quote short and now I wish I hadn’t as I do agree with the last sentence that the speaking of tongues is real. But not always by a long shot. As a former Pentecostal pastor, I assure you it’s not always real. God’s Holy Spirit does not speak something this week then change Hs mind next week. There are conterfiets in every congregation. Both in the speaker and the interpreter.
This is not limited in any way to the Pentecostals as there are indeed Charismatic Catholics who both speak in tongues and pray in the Holy Spirit. There are also bridge Churches teaching catholisism and desiring communion with Rome who have and require apostolic linage in their clergy, that this practice is common among. But it’s not nearly as odd in appearence to the newcomer as the Holy Spirit does not interupt the Mass but awaits the proper time. I notice this also happens with the more mature Pentecostal.
The originator of this thread stated that it wasn’t comfortable and that isn’t surprising. Imagine how a Pentecostal would feel attending Mass for the first time. But I’d also tell the originator to listen closely to her fellow parishioners after they recieve the Eucharist. I have heard some praying in tongues at that point in the Roman Church but it’s much quieter and personal.
The concept that it’s a language unknown isn’t completely correct. It’s a language the speaker wasn’t taught by man. It also developes as the person grows in Christ. Much like english to a babe.

Speaking in tongues is real. I have done it and learned later that what I said is a message about God in Hebrew, a very scriptural one. But not everyone does it.
Prophecy is also a gift not everyone has. God doesn’t use false prophets because He wants listeners to be sure whom to listen to. But people have faked prophecy. Both gifts can be real or false.
You don’t have to be a pastor or the spouse of one to prophesy or speak in tongues.
I never saw anyone put the testimonies of healing on the wall. They can be shared in many ways. Pentecostals strongly believe all testimonies should be shared with as many people as reasonable depending on how private the miracle was. This is part of glorifying God and giving Him thanks and evangelizing.

It is a fact that the AOG does not**** believe you have to speak in tongues to be saved. You may be thinking of the United Pentecostal church, UPC, they do believe that and are considered to be a cult by many protestants.

I taught a course in “Life in the
spirit” at St. Monicas parish in East Peoria, Illinois many years ago.

I also attended many prayer meetings of Catholic Charismatics. In one prayer meeting a man sat in a chair and had hands laid on him. There was a message in tongues and the interpretation was supposedly coming from Mary the mother of Jesus. the message went something like this addresed to the man in the chair. " you have been dishonest in your business but in this day and time you have to be dishonest to succeed in business" end of quote.

If you communicate with the Spirit World the Truth comes out and you as a listener and receiver of the voice has to be prepared to listen to what the Spirit has to say.
The Spirit is very Honest and Truthful, it is a message of Love and Truth. Honest Love tells it like it is.

We would never lie to our children.

It is true there are deceivers in the Spirit world…The Holy Mother told her receivers Satan is now chained for 1,000 years…We can stand up to the small deceivers and hear the truth.

Charismatic Catholics need to take a good look at the Assemblies of God and United Pentecostal movements. There are many people, raised Catholic, who stray from the Church into substance abuse, get out of the substance abuse culture, and stray into non-Catholic Charismatic denominations, as a replacement addiction based on feelings. They end up with intensified depression, guilt laid upon guilt, in churches which preach anti-Catholicism, without the advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation tied into the fourth and fifth steps of the recovery programs.

I agree that some of these abuses, including imitation of the Gifts of the Spirit, can leak into the Catholic Charismatic movement, but that can be counteracted with acceptance from mainstream Catholicism.

Sorry about the long sentences, but this is also an important issue for me.
