I’ve pretty much made up my mind. I will be proposing to my girlfriend and asking her to marry me. I know that I would like a simple proposal but I cannot think of any good proposal ideas. How did some of you married folk propose? Any ideas or suggestions?

Don’t overdo it–go for something as simple and idiot-proof as possible, and don’t do it in front of an audience.

We were private so I had a short bit I said first. You know how much I love her or why I can’t live without her or some kinda that romantic stuff chix like.

I’ve heard of guys proposing at a church, usually some nice old basilica or cathedral. Maybe put the ring in her doughnut after mass.

Don’t ask her in public (e.g., like the one my son and I witnessed on Main Street in Disneyland). Don’t ask her in front of an audience. Give her the space to say yes or no. This shows her great respect.

And if possible, talk with her father first and ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage. I’m attending three weddings this fall, and all three grooms spoke with the father of their beloved before proposing – and all three dads gave permission/blessing so long as their daughter agreed. Each woman loved this simple act of respect and honor!

God bless you, dear one!

My husband proposed after a really nice picnic in a really gorgeous public garden. It was simple, private, and classy. You can’t go wrong with a classic proposal.

Nothing corny, gimmicky, and DON’T put the ring in food, a huge box, or hide it in any way.
It’s not a carnival booth.
A quiet place…soft lighting…sincere words. That will memorable and romantic. A moonlit garden sounds nice.

👍

Nothing annoys me more when I am out and some guy has to take the focus off of the planned activity to make a big show. If you are in a romantic restaurant, guess what, the other patrons want their quiet dinner, they do NOT want the big show

Nothing could be further from the truth. A lot of women will feel diminished to an object if you talk to her dad first. You should know by now if your GF would appreciate this or not.

.
that is not very nice. No woman wants her man saying something when on the inside he rolling his eyes thinking it is ridiculous. Really women prefer honesty

🤷 Just because you don’t agree with me, probably doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be further from the truth. These three women (ages 22, 25, and 35) felt completely treasured by this simple action. The men knew the fathers, and had spent a lot of time with the women and their families, and had tremendous respect for the women’s fathers, as well as an appreciation of the fact that marriage brings two families together. Speaking with the father first – if only to let him know of his intention to propose – created a foundation of respect for family interactions as these couples enter into marriage and have children.

To the OP: If you know your GF well enough to propose marriage, you should also know her and her family well enough to choose whether or not to speak with her father before proposing 👍

God bless you!

My Dad took Mum for a private walk on the beach and as the sun was setting went down one knee, presented the ring and, addressing her by her full name ,asked The Question. Simple, traditional and romantic (at least how I was told 😉 ) Seven kids and eighteen years later they are still happily married :)🙂

My husband proposed in a very pretty spot on the college campus where we met. It was late evening, and the forecast had called for snow but instead it was raining - hard. He decided to go ahead with it anyway. There’s something kind of cute about a man suddenly dropping to one knee right into a huge puddle when he asks you to marry him. 😛

One thing I don’t advise is intentionally misleading her away from thinking you will ask. It can come off as you’re losing interest in the relationship, which is going to be confusing and possibly hurtful. I’ve seen this happen with a few couples.

Yes! You don’t want to wait so long with the perfect proposal that your intended has already chosen a “kill date” for the relationship if you don’t propose by then. If you wait too long, she’ll think that you’re just wasting her time.

Because of that, I would not encourage waiting too long to save for a ring–either buy what you can now or propose and then ring shop with her later when you can. If there is some reason why you can’t marry soon, you can always have a longer engagement.

Best wishes!

How about, “Would you marry me?”
Agreed. Don’t try to be something you aren’t.

I still married my husband even though his proposal was more “you know, we might as well get married…will you marry me?” while we were just laying around the house just talking about stuff. He didn’t even have a ring.

I think wanting it to be “special” and “memorable” is sweet, but I think it’s a bit over-rated.

Not every woman needs a “big/showy” proposal.

I disagree. An engagement should not be a surprise, so the answer shouldn’t be one either. A proposal can be a surprise, public or private, whatever, but marriage is something discerned together in the courtship process.

Some girls would like the audience.

Am I the only Catholic around here? You people act like you’ve never seen a doughnut before. Ok, so it’s this really wonderful pastry that’s shaped like a tire and HAS A BIG HOLE IN THE MIDDLE. If you have some that get a little stale, microwave for a few seconds and add vanilla ice cream. We call it a flat tire. Apple fritters are even better.

Anyway, the whole doughnut thing was mostly a joke. Hiding an engagement ring in food is stupid. Unless she’s a really big fan of doughnuts, then it might work. I assumed the OP wasn’t a complete bonehead and would realize that the whole doughnut thing was not a serious suggestion. Also, the parish hall is not a great place for a proposal. I like the idea of a place where no one else is, at the moment anyway.

Yeah, but you’re probably getting a diamond ring in the process.

If some woman wants to gift me a few thousand dollars worth of stereo equipment, she can do it however she pleases, public, private, whatever—fine by me! 👍

You post made it sound like ALL women wanted that. And the point I was trying to make is the statement ‘ALL’ women appreciate it, couldn’t be further from the truth. The absolute reality is some women appreciate it, others don’t. And that is what I was trying to tell the OP. That he knows what his GF wants and should not listen to people who never met her. If he suspects his GF wouldn’t like it, he shouldn’t do it. If he knows his GF would appreciate it, then he should
