OP, I suggest you propose to your girlfriend at an amusement park. Hire a cover band to play a list of all her favorite songs, also hire some dancers to dance to the cover bands music, hire a bunch of circus entertainers like clowns to entertain to strangers that will be watching, buy a lot of flowers ( they need to be real flowers) , and fireworks! There has to be a lot of fireworks! As for your entrance, I think you should arrive to the event 1 hour later in a Lamborghini or riding a horse dressed up as a knight. Lastly the most important thing is to have a cameraman who will film the whole event and post it on YouTube for the whole world to see!

That was awesome.

Also–buy out the amusement park and invite everybody you’ve ever said “hello” to.

Do you want the story of my friend’s daughter’s engagement? He took her up to the red rocks In Sedona, AZ, where he had helicoptered a chef to serve a romantic dinner for two at sunset, with a violinist playing in the background. I assume you too, OP, are the heir to a very large family fortune.

Re asking the father of the bride, we were out to dinner with my DD and her BF. When she stepped away from the table, he asked if he could stop by the following Tuesday, when he knew DD had a work-related engagement. He came by and asked for our blessings, which we were glad to give, and he told us he planned to propose that weekend. But very early the next morning, we received a call saying that DD’s beloved godmother and aunt had passed away. We were all devastated, and DSIL-2B postponed the proposal. Because we knew that he was planning to propose, we could give him an idea of when she had come to terms with her grief and the proposal came at the perfect time to lift her spirits.

She thinks she had the perfect proposal. They spent the day at their favorite beach, and at sunset he played a special song on his iPod and gave her a letter (I don’t know what it said bit surmise he professed his love in it) and asked her to marry him. It was low-key and personal and exactly right for them.

Why does it bother you? I’m not trying to be a jerk here but I just can’t fathom why it would bother anyone.
I could write a book on why but to give a few reasons

1-) If I am out with a bunch of women, the married ones have to tell about how their husbands proposed and they each need to top the story as if they have the most considerate husband and it becomes a competition

2-) Being single then everyone teases me ‘Angie, there is still hope for you’ and shame me for being single.

3-) If I am at a romantic dinner with a man, there is an awkwardness like if I make any comment, he will think I am hitting I want a ring or worse, he will hint he is about to propose and I am about to run and hide

4-) Let’s just use this as an example (but it is not far fetch). I am at my monthly book club meeting. I have very little free time and this monthly book club meeting is one of my few social outlets. I have been looking forward for days to discuss the book with my friends. Some man (who never attended previously) walks in and makes a big show of proposing to a girl in the club. The whole evening is spent talking about her upcoming wedding. I had a lot of work I could have done at home but I put that aside to discuss the book. Not only did I not get to do something I was looking forward to, I wasted my time and my work at home did not get done

5-) I think it is in a way making a mockery of the whole idea of marriage. It has gotten to the point, teenage boys are spending lots of money just to ask a girl to the prom. It is setting an expectation that love is measure by how much money is spent. There is this silly competition that everyone has to outdo everyone else’s proposal

6-) It is almost making women seem like they have unreasonable demands. A real woman worth having would be so touched that he proposes she would not need all the fancy show. Marriage is NOT a fancy show it is day to day living.

7-) As a woman, if a man publicly proposed to me, I would feel pressured into having the perfect glamorous movie star scripted response. I would NOT feel comfortable being myself, so when I see a woman’s reaction I can help but think it is phony. Not saying I am right, I am simply saying that is what I think

Honestly, I see no positive reasons to do it in a loud public manner

#5. Yes. Absolutely.
Is it about a marriage?
Or the proposal, the wedding, the venue, the ring, the dress, the spectacle? It’s no wonder that many couple feel s tremendous let-down after the big splashy wedding.

Sorry, off-topic, but just had to get that out. freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-forum/hijacked.gif
