There were three African popes. They were from modern Tunisia/Libya, so don’t assume they were black. Most Northern Africans are not black, and they didn’t have cameras back then. 😉
I know that there is a reason I didn’t mention the third one who came from a caucasian African people. The other two one was black but they keep switching his race even.

A Native American Pope would be cool, but I’m not ready speculate on the next one yet. Our German Pope hasn’t been called home yet. I’ve grown very fond of him, you know. 😉
Me too! I’m not even a member of the Church yet, but His Holiness’ encylical Deus Est Caritas was the first remotely Catholic thing I’ve looked at. I don’t even remember what compelled me to read it. Anyway, I’ve been drawn to the Church ever since.

I don’t even know what you are trying to say.

Can you please post who it is that you know for sure is black? From what I understand, all three African popes were North African and their race is not certain. If you have definitive proof, please provide it. Just finding a site that claims they were black is not sufficient. I’m not saying they weren’t black, but saying that they definitely were is a little presumptuous on your part.

Me too! I’m in no rush to see a new Pope. However, he is mortal, so we are just speculating on the future Pope because there will be one.

Benedict is truly a Huge Blessing. I’m with you, I hope the Lord doesn’t call him home for a very long time.😉

Well would RCIA count? If they where wrong I got a friend that came into the Church that was lied to. They provided icons and some text saying that Victor the First was black. I’ll see if I can find them on the net.

That not I’d be suprised that students in RCIA were being decieved, I know I was.

Deceived? That’s hardly a nice thing to say. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were mistaken though. I know that my RCIA class taught some erroneous things about Church teaching, but it wasn’t done to deceive. Pope Victor I may have been black, but he was most probably Berber…ditto for the other two African popes…and St. Augustine. They weren’t Scandinavian by any stretch, but they probably weren’t black.

Icons may have been done with darker or lighter skin. Again, there were no photos available to the iconographers and artists. They may have drawn them to look like everyone they had ever known. 🤷

I guess I’m a throw back, but why should we care if the Pope is black? Actions define the man, not skin color. It seems to me that drawing attention to a leader’s race just serves to play into the progressive hand of balkanization and the white guilt. If the next pope is black and actually makes bold moves to confront the evils of the day, I’m all for him. If every pope from now on is black and does this, great. Skin color is irrelevant to the just mind.

Since were speculating, how about an Irish or Scottish Pope? Have we ever had one?

I can’t find anything on Pope Victor’s race. All I can find is that he was born in the Roman Province of Africa. But that does not make in black. Certain parts of Africa are caucasian. Also, many Romans migrated to Africa for military and economic reasons. Just look at Augustine’s father. He was an immigrant.

Seriously.

To wish for a Pope or President or CEO on the basis of race is… racist.

I think in the first few centuries there were a couple of popes from Africa
There have been many. However, we do not know if any were black. North Africans are often caucasian. But the issue is not one of race. Popes are elected for their gifts, not their color.
