Protestant Friend Doesn’t Like Hymns About Mary

Ask your friend is she has ever heard “Mary, did you know?” written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene - neither of them anywhere near being Catholic. So, it’s not just the Catholics - it is all Christians who look at the big picture of our salvation.
 
Ya I found the “Mary did you know” song… Scripturally deceptive.
And kinda wrong.
But that’s just me…

Iam sure many people like the sing song way it is … Oh well … Each 2 their own

Given the words of the song

While beautiful words, It could be suggested, the words of the song suggest that Jesus said NOTHING to His mother at all about Himself during their life together, or say what He was going to do and why He was even here. For 33 years, He said NOTHING to her, taught her NOTHING about Himself, about heaven, hell, salvation, why He was here, what He was going to do in the future or even tomorrow, , etc etc etc. He taught her NOTHING about connecting the dots of history.

The bible doesn’t say much about the first 30 years of Jesus and Mary’s life. But to let the words of the song represent reality, assumes the words of the song are true, then that suggests Jesus said nothing to Mary in 30 years. Jesus left Mary completely in the dark and so did the HS, the angel Gabriel, et al.

Personally, I don’t buy that argument. And therefore, don’t buy the words of the song. But that’s just me thinking out loud. But I’m glad a Protestant songwriter is thinking of this.

I have never seen it that way at all. It sounds more like the whispering of an angel into the ear of Mary soon after she delivered Jesus.
 
A good general rule: Do not test anything against your opinion of it - test it against the truth.
 
Yes both Joseph and Mary had angel intervention.
But one would wonder why there was not more historical writings on this.

As I said, the words of the song suggest Jesus said NOTHING TO Mary for 30 yrs? God didn’t teach His own mother that whole time they were together? Even at 12 yrs old, Jesus was found preaching and teaching in the temple. He never taught His own mother?

It is ridiculous to say or think that. The words of the song do not say that to me but if they do for you then do with it want you want. I have no objection to songs that include Mary.

That’s not the point. It’s words of songs imposing negatives on her that I object to, in spite of her being the mother of God they make speculations dismissing she is the mother of God, and God left her in the dark on who she is, and who He is, and what she knew about that. It’s presuming God said nothing to her for over 30 years while they were together…

Yes, because somehow all songs sung in church are worship, always.

Well it does seem like that. I can’t blame your friend on that aspect. The early church was more Christ centric. It seems Private Revelation invoked this marianism.
