Unfortunately, this is exactly why Protestants want a concrete scriptural proof or a solid historical proof…it is b/c w/o any such proof all that one is offered is blusterous opinion
To continue our analogy: an atheist could then say, “this is exactly why atheists want a concrete scientific proof or a solid historical proof…it is b/c w/o any such proof all that one is offered is blustering opinion.”

So you agree with atheists–everything without scientiric or historical proof is blustering opinion, Radical?

Louie1983:Sorry, bud, but I must respectfully disagree with you on the issue of dressing for church, especially after watching men enter a catholic church wearing Levi’s and a casual shirt, just ten(10) days ago!
believr,
I don’t really think that this is an “Issue”. It has become a point of conversation but only that- a point - and not an issue.
Why do so many people busy themselves with the outside of the cup? When you come to Christ, is it necessary to wear a tuxedo, or a $2000 suit? You never know where you are gong to be, when the Holy Spirit leads you to the Saviour!
You ae getting a little off the wall now - No one is talking about tux’s or 2000 dollar suits.
We are talking about dressing well out of LOVE and RESPECT to our Dear Lord, Savior and King. Is this Wrong??? Of course it is not. It is a personal Choice.
Or if someone does not have a good set of clothes, they certainly should come as they are.

But

While we are on the subject of clothing, I have personally seen both men and women who dress in new and “fashonable” clothes that are immodest and distracting. Not at ALL what one should wear to the Throne Room of the King of Kings.
And what is a bibel? Anything like a Bible, which your church claims to have written?
A bibel is a simple mispelling of bible which those early memebers of the Church DID write.

James

The Reason why Protestantism is gravely divided in faith and morals is because it relies strictly on proof reading the scriptural texts deprived of the central Apostolic teaching authority (Magisterium) of the Church which is guided by the Paraclete.

We possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.
2 Peter 1, 19-21

And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well.
2 Timothy 2, 2

“But since they allege the divine oracles and force on them a misinterpretation, according to their private sense, it becomes necessary to meet them just so far as to vindicate these passages, and to show that they bear an orthodox sense, and that our opponents are in error.”
Athanasius, Discourse Against the Arians, 1:37 (A.D. 362)

Pax Christu :harp:

JRKH: Perhaps I mixed you up with someone else, who had issue with people dressing informally for church service, mass, or otherwise! They said something like,“well if you don’t want to bring your best to meet your Saviour…”! I used to dress up for church, when I was younger, but then gradually began “dressing down” to a more casual attire. Someone once said to me, “You should show more respect to God!” I said, “We’re talking about someone who has seen me in my birthday suit!”
Certainly God has seen me: in jeans, in shorts, in a bathing suit, wearing a hat, wearing nothing at all …

On the other hand, would you agree that, prior to the Burning Bush, God had many times seen Moses wearing sandals?

I don’t understand confirmation, completely! I think this is where a catholic accepts Christ as their personal Saviour, right?
No, although I can see how you might get such an idea, since very few Catholics are confirmed (chrismated) as infants.

I can’t remember having been accused of twisting, and or sculpting scripture, to fit my own agenda, by more people than I have in the last 3 months
Hey, I just noticed something interesting: 3 months is also about how long you’ve been on CAF. Now how’s that for a crazy coincidence?

Now, JRKH would be correct to claim an inconsistency if, (a) when talking with the atheist, the P insisted that the atheist must accept the Bible as inerrant, but then (b) when talking to the RC the P refused to accept RC tradition as inerrant. JRKH needs to hunt down those Ps and complain to them and realize that his complaint doesn’t apply to the rest of us.
Interesting point – although I don’t think it will make you very popular among your fellow Ps.

Radical:
if one assumes that the perpetual virginity of Mary actually has some significance in and of itself
As with all Marian doctrines/dogmas, their significance has to do with our understanding of Christ. Every doctrine/dogma re-affirms our Christology.

so then we are agreed, JRKH’s analogy is also flawed b/c he is saying (according to you) that b/c the P can not provide scientific proof to an atheist, he shouldn’t require scriptural proof from a RC.
We are agreed? You believe that it’s disingenuous and hypocritical of a P to demand concrete evidence from a RC yet cannot provide concrete evidence to an atheist?
Would be kinda like arguing that b/c the history professor can’t provide scientific proof that Alexander was the son of Philip, he shouldn’t require any proof from historical evidence that Napolean actually won the battle of Waterloo…he must simply accept the assertion. 🤷
No, it would be like a P demanding evidence from a RC yet being unable to provide concrete evidence to an atheist.

And I still have not found any Spiritual directive to call any “mortal” man Holy Father(no one will be completely holy until we stand before our King, clothed in righteousness)
No Catholic here is claiming that any mortal man is “completely” holy, 1beleevr.

And you are correct in saying that no one will be completely holy until we stand before our King. If you are not holy today, and you die today, how would you be able to stand before our King? Is there something that happens after you die that cleanses you? Yes! It’s called Purgatory!

Basically, what you are saying is that Jesus cannot be trusted to keep His Word. He did not really promise to lead the Church into all Truth, or He was too weak to keep His promise. He was perhaps unconcerned, and unable to preserve His Word from error, because the falliblility of man is too much for Him.
Oh dear, the dreaded “if you don’t believe what I tell you, then you have made Jesus out to be a liar” ploy. Some originality please.

If I believed that the RCC was the one and same church Jesus founded; and

If I believed that “lead into all Truth” means “can’t make a mistake regarding official doctrine” (note the words aren’t at all the same)

Then your occusation might have some merit.

(no one will be completely holy until we stand before our King, clothed in righteousness)
Interesting that you should make that point, 1beleevr, since it’s usually the Protestant who use the word “saints” to mean living Christians, whereas Catholics usually use the word “saints” to mean the saints in heaven.

Oh dear, the dreaded “if you don’t believe what I tell you, then you have made Jesus out to be a liar” ploy.
Hey, something we can agree on. 👍

I’ll tell you, I am so tired of the “You don’t agree with me? Oh, I see, you think Jesus is a liar” form of rhetoric.

To continue our analogy: an atheist could then say, “this is exactly why atheists want a concrete scientific proof or a solid historical proof…it is b/c w/o any such proof all that one is offered is blustering opinion.”
And I would respond that b/c the question of Christ’s existence is a historical question, one can not properly require scientific proof…and I would agree that it is entirely appropriate to request solid historical proof.
So you agree with atheists–everything without scientiric or historical proof is blustering opinion, Radical?
Do atheists say this? Maybe my atheists are smarter than your atheists? In any event, some things might have a mathematical proof, some things might have a logical proof based on agreed premises and some other things might just be faith…but that bit of bile was a blusterous opinion.

And I would respond that b/c the question of Christ’s existence is a historical question, one can not properly require scientific proof…and I would agree that it is entirely appropriate to request solid historical proof.
No, not necessarily the question of Christ’s existence, Radical. There’s also the question of Christ’s divinity, the question of His resurrection, the question of His miracles. etc etc etc. Can you as a Christian provide scientific, historical, CONCRETE proof of these?
In any event, some things might have a mathematical proof, some things might have a logical proof based on agreed premises and some other things might just be faith…
Indeed. And the part about faith is the part that atheists reject. 🤷

JRKH: Dressing appropriately or inappropriately, shouldn’t be an issue; you are right, but many times, it becomes one, for whatever reason:D You will see people whispering, perhaps even pointing at one, whom they have deemed dressed inappropriately, while God is saying,“His/her heart is the focus of my attention!”.And I am in the presence of my Saviour, on a daily basis; not just when I am in church! He encounters me at my home, at my work, in the mall, in my car, etc. This is the beauty of what happened when the veil(curtain) was torn from the top down; we were given the privilege of entering the throne room of grace, through prayer, and communion! So, if what someone is wearing, is distracting, perhaps your focus is on the wrong thing:cool:

This is the difference between us my frined -
It is not “I” for I am nothing. It is Christ in His Church who does this for it is Christ’s Authority within His Church which does this.
Even if I have difficulties with some doctrines, I accept them because I am under Christ’s Authority and Obedient to Him.
Please note that we both believe that we are under Christ’s authority and that we are obedient to him….the actual difference is that it is your personal opinion that the RCC is a valid inerrant authority (re official doctrine) and it is my personal opinion that it is not.
And so long as one insists on looking at the Bible outside of it’s historical context one will have difficulty seeing.
So long as one insists on removing the Bible - a Catholic Church Book - From the Historical Church one will always have only a segment of the fullness of understanding.
The historical context for a book such as Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians is that it is a letter written by someone (who we both acknowledge as an apostle) to a local church in Corinth regarding its circumstances at that time. That letter was immediately recognized as possessing the authority of apostolic teaching and was therefore copied and circulated for the edification of others. Nothing, absolutely nothing about that historical context gives the RCC the ability to infallibly interpret the epistle. The epistle constitutes part of God’s Word and not part of the RCC’s Word. Likewise the book of Genesis is part of God’s Word and not part of the Jews’ Word and I am no more bound (by historical context) to accept the Jews’ interpretation of the OT than I am bound to accept the RCC’s interpretation of the NT.
This is a perfect example of how things can get distorted.
I was not calling anyone an athiest.
that was obvious
I was only referencing that this is the kind of demand we might expect from an athiest.
likewise I indicated that your expectation for a P to accept the RCC’s authority is akin to the kind of expectation that we might expect from a Mormon.
To demand “Concrete Evidence” for something that is ultimately based on “Faith” seemed a bit odd to me.
This seems valid….if you had indicated to the fellow that you have no proof or solid evidence for Mary’s perpetual virginity and that you believe it purely as a matter of faith, then it is odd for him to request proof (as you have already acknowledge that you don’t have any)….and it would also be reasonable for him to inform you that, for his purposes, he would require solid evidence in order to believe (particularly when the earliest record of the belief is a forgery).
Peace

You believe that it’s disingenuous and hypocritical of a P to demand concrete evidence from a RC yet cannot provide concrete evidence to an atheist?
I believe that it’s disingenuous and hypocritical of a P to demand concrete scientific evidence from a RC while refusing to meet an atheist’s demand for concrete scientific evidence (wrt the same or wrt a similar matter). Further, I believe that it’s disingenuous and hypocritical of a RC to insist that a P accept the RCC’s claims of authority w/o offering any solid historical or scriptural proof while the RC refuses to accept the Mormon Church’s claims of authority unless the Mormon produces solid historical or scriptural proof. And finally, I don’t think that it’s disingenuous and hypocritical of a P to demand concrete historical evidence from a RC while refusing to meet an atheist’s demand for concrete scientific evidence b/c historical evidence can be applicable to matters that scientific evidence cannot touch.

JRKH: I admit that I deliberately exaggerated the tuxedo and $2000 suit thing, mostly to illuminate the absurdity of debate over how one is clad, during worship, or church service:D Tattered and torn, immaculate and pressed, Jesus will meet you right where you are; be it a gleaming, stained glass adorned building or a weather-beaten shack! Yes, the OT speaks of the glorious Temple that Solomon built, but without God in a building, it is just that a building! Question:A seemingly homeles person, dressed in worn out, dirty clothes, reeking of perspiration and other odors, shows up at your church. What would you do with him/her? Remember one thing when talking about appearances, whether how one is dressed, or what type of house they live in; our Saviour was born in a manger:thumbsup:

Please note that we both believe that we are under Christ’s authority and that we are obedient to him….the actual difference is that it is your personal opinion that the RCC is a valid inerrant authority (re official doctrine) and it is my personal opinion that it is not.

The historical context for a book such as Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians is that it is a letter written by someone (who we both acknowledge as an apostle) to a local church in Corinth regarding its circumstances at that time. **That letter was immediately recognized as possessing the authority of apostolic teaching and was therefore copied and circulated for the edification of others. **
I would like to ask you what evidence you have in the historical record for the bolded statement above.
The reason I ask is because in an earlier post you made this statement in relation to the infancy Gospel of James:
Doesn’t this teaching first appear in the historical record in the “Gospel of James” which was written around 150 AD? The first 100 years is missing from your “constant”
Since you are looking for “documented” evidence for the Marion belief prior to 150 AD, it seems fair of me to ask for Documented Evidence that Paul’s Gospel was “immediately recognized as possessing the authority of apostolic teaching”.
St Ignatius and St Clements letters also were “immediately recognized” as having the authority of Apostolic teaching as these men were the direct successors of the Apostles. And their letters were also copied and distributed.
And you know this how??
God’s Word was assembled into the Bible form by Whom?
Which Church did these people belong to??

You’re right you are not bound - this is the good and bad of free will.

Of course in these types of discussions I am always drawn back to Jesus command for us to “Tell it to the Church” and then to abide by the Church’s decisions.
I cannot, in good conscience, “tell it to a church” that has no more than “local” authority or defines the Church only as “The Body of Believers”. Such simply does NOT jive with Christ’s prayer for unity or St Pauls desire that we be “Of One Mind”.
A Teaching authoritiy is what is required for us to maintain this unity. Historically this is the Catholic Church.
You deny that.
I pray that the spirit will eventually guide you home.
You will make a great Catholic Apologist,

Peace
James
