Protestants: What is the oddest thing about Catholicism?

Please name the Number One thing you think is the hardest to believe about Catholicism. Thanks.
I’m not a Christian, but I’m very well versed in (traditional) Catholicism for various reasons.

I’d have to say the number one thing I find weird/odd/hard to accept is the believe that Catholics think they are eating the flesh of their deity, and drinking his blood. What I find even odder is that they believe Jesus told them to literally do that…he was a Jew, and Jews are strongly forbidden from eating any manner of blood (Leviticus).

The second odd thing is their belief in Mary as mediatrix of all graces. Now this would perturb a Protestant perhaps more than me…but the belief that everything good Catholics get from Jesus comes via Mary first, just sounds…! Though as a Jew, I recognize that Jesus was a Jew, and knowing how controlling many Jewish mothers are of their sons, I can almost see her insisting that she OK everything before he does it! 🙂

And third, when I was growing up, those of us who were not Catholics always tended to think less of the religious Catholics we knew, because we knew they had to promise to obey the church no matter what. We always saw that as stupidity, because in my religion at least, we are taught to question everything. So it made us think less of Catholics to a degree, because we saw them as mindless robots who did anything their church told them to (it was not until I was an adult that I learned of the little-discussed Catholic principle of following an informed conscience first.)

You asked for one, but I gave you three!

It is still not a form of abortion. So everytime a married couple has sexual intercourse, it is only for the purpose of forming a life. That is all the sexual union is for. Not to have intimacy with one another.
Actually, the Catholic Church teaches that the marriage bed is sacred because God gave us marriage as a gift, not only for life but for love. Contraception takes away the life and love giving aspects, both for the procreative reasons already hammered through here, but also for the love giving reason of total self-giving of the couple. If one of the partners holds back (contracepts) than there is a withholding of the possibility of life and a withholding of the total self-giving love.

Read He created them, Man and Woman by the Late Pope John Paul the Second. Or if not, read “the Theology of the Body, explained” by Christopher West.

Also, just FYI, condoms contain a spermicide, which will kill all life in the womb. It’s there because the failure rate of condoms used perfectly and correctly is around 4% (from what I remember). Add into that the fact that most people don’t use them properly and you have something like 15%. What the condom misses, it kills with the jellies and foams you use with it.

The Churches standing on contraception is not about getting into a man and woman’s bed and regulating, it’s about reminding us WHY God put man and woman on earth and made us marry: we love and because we love and wish to mirror Christ’s sacrificial love, we must not defile the bed with anything that is not selfless-so not only contraception but pornography, other partners, fornication, etc…

see?

😊

If it’s not a person in the womb, why do you care if it’s aborted? It’s not a human, according to your reasoning. So what is it you have against abortion?
Because it is still a life.

Intimacy is a secondary use, although admittedly important. God said ‘‘Be fruitful and multiply’’.

He did not command us to ‘‘go forth, have a bit of fun, feel good and if you think you’re ready…really ready…then sure go ahead and spawn some children’’

People who are not ready for children should not be having sex.
People who don’t want children should not have them. People who want to be intimate with their spouses sexually should. I am glad my husband doesn’t view me as a baby making machine.

I don’t agree. In fact I find it odd that a soul would inhabit a being without consciousness, non-sentient, as is the case with embryos and fetuses. Consciousness is late in developing. This is one of my main problems with the attempt to put the undeveloped/unborn on the same plane as fully developed/born/sentient beings. They aren’t equal. They both have a kind of life, but one is aware of itself and able to sustain itself without the aid of another human body. Once a fetus has reached the stage where it can survive outside the womb, even with the aid of machines, I would say that a c-section should be done instead of an aboriton. The baby could then be put on life support as any premie would. Also there was an earlier comment on breathing air as oppossed to aminoic (sp?) fluid and a response mentioning those who were unable to breath on their own (i.e., requiring a respirator). The differnce is that it is still oxygen they are breathing (the born and anyone on a respirator). There is no comparison.
Don’t the unborn also need oxygen? They just get it in a different way. An unborn baby’s lungs aren’t fully developed. This is why so many premies need to be on ventilators.

An older person on a ventilator is also unable to use his lungs.

The born and the unborn both take in oxygen. So if you get your oxygen any way other than breathing air, you’re not a person?

Not if both partners agree that they don’t want children.

The failure of the Episcopal church to follow the will of God particularly in it’s failure to condemn contraception and abortion, has, I think, resulted in the present disarray and near schism that is now occurring in the (particularly American) EC. This coupled with the ordination of women and the acceptance and promotion of homosexuals and lesbians, has robbed the EC of whatever credibility it may have once had. It is, I think, a moribund body. God does not prosper those who flaunt His laws.
Why would Catholics approve of women being ordained? They only want women to create babies. Unless, you are of course a nun.

Sex is for procreation. If the only way to be intimate is to have sex then I feel sorry for that couple.

All I hear is ‘‘want want want’’ I don’t WANT to have babies but I do WANT to have sex.

You are making disgusting assumptions here. After accusing us on numerous occasions of making assumptions about you.

If sex is for procreation only, then we are not better than animals. If I don’t want to have children. I don’t need to have children. I didn’t get married to pop out babies for no one.

So the only thing that separates us from animals is a conscious recognition of the orgasm? Wow…

What is the woman’s place in the Catholic church? To procreate with her husband or be celibate with him if she chooses not to have children. Or they can become nuns. Might as well since the Catholic Church wants to be in the bedroom. I find this concept odd.

The woman’s place in the Catholic Church is to serve God with all of her heart. Just as it is with the man. How they can serve is different, however, and to argue about it is like complaining that women cannot pee standing up. Please withdraw your assumption or stop complaining when you percieve one is made against you.

Wow… that isn’t what I said. A husband and wife can have sexual intercourse and be intimate without subjecting her to unwanted pregnancies. I have a friend who has many children is always saying my life is so hard because I had these children. I reply that she should of used birth control. She has no one to blame for her hard life but herself and her sperm donor.

Sperm donor? Does she not have a husband? If not she should not have had the children.

A woman doesn’t have to pop out babies to serve God. Women don’t have a choice about how their anatomy is made to urinate. They should have a choice of when babies pop out of them.

They should have a choice of when babies pop out of them.
And they do. It is called abstaining from marital relations or marrieage until they are in a position to provide care for the children they give birth to. You’re very naive if you think babies just ‘‘pop out’’, either that or you’re just being vulgar, and highly disrespectful to women who have had children.
