By repeating a prayer, for me it is making it more “common”, I mean, I realize less the importance and the depth of what I’m saying , so I prefer not to do so …
I don’t say that somebody else is wrong if it helps him or her ; it doesn’t help me …
When I’m in heaven I’ll see, I’ll be more intelligent than here …
I’m not sure where it is in the Bible, but Jesus gives a parable that addresses this issue. A woman seeks justice from a judge, but he will not give it. The woman comes to him every day with the same request, and finally he gives in due to her repeated requests.

So, in essence, if we pester God enough for something that we really think we should have He will grant us this? Somehow I do not think that this is how this works. God is the same today, tomorrow and always. He doesn’t change His mind. We cannot continually ask for something and ‘wear’ Him down. I view that Lord’s Prayer to be more of a model of how we should be praying. Not to actually pray the exact words over and over again but to start out acknowledging God as our Father in Heaven, to praise Him first and formost in all prayers, then to ask Him for the things we request. Now, I am not saying that you should never pray this prayer because it is a beautiful prayer and when prayed with understanding of the words it can be quite powerful in your connection with God. BUT I think that Jesus meant it to be more of a model of how we pray rather than one we use over and over.

No, what I’m saying is that there is merit in PERSEVERING in prayer. Keep in mind that I gave a biblical example. Also, as I wrote earlier, Jesus and the angels are both cited in Scripture as performing repetitive prayer.

I know this parable, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you must repeat the SAME words over and over again …
You can also pray the Lord’s prayer with your own words, that’s what I often do ; for me, the words themselves are not so important, the Lord’s prayer is a model, it shows, for instance, that when we pray God must be first, that we must forgive those who have sinned against us, that we can also pray for “personal” needs…

I agree that we must persevere …but for me perseverance doesn’t necessarily imply repetition …

I totally agree with you , I mean , with the way you consider the Lord’s Prayer ; for me, it also means that in our prayers God must be first, just as He must be first in our lives …and then we can pray for our personal needs …

Fair enough, just realize that it doesn’t prohibit it.

Also, the true purpose of the rosary is meditation. So in that sense it really is a spontaneous prayer. So why do we cloud up our meditation of the mysteries by saying prayers by rote? So that we keep focus. A typical rosary takes 15-20 minutes. I don’t know about you guys, but praying spontaneously for 20 minutes is pretty tough. Heck, praying spontaneously for 5 minutes can be quite a load. By sitting down to the rosary we commit ourselves to a long period of meditative prayer. Because of its repetitive nature, our mind doesn’t wonder. Seriously, If I were to just sit down and randomly start saying mental prayer, my thoughts would eventually drift to the approaching Steelers vs Panthers Super Bowl.

Ultimately, no Catholic is mandated to pray the rosary. The important thing to realize is that the rosary in no means is a false doctrine the somehow “disproves” the church. That being said, Catholics should use it as it is a good help in prayer.

What is prohibited is “vain” repetition “like heathen”, honestly I don’t really know what it means, maybe there is an allusion to a very specific way of praying like repeating magical formulas or something like that, I have no idea …

But for me anyhow the problem is with praying somebody else than God, with or without rosary doesn’t change anything …

If you use it or not it is YOUR problem ( if it is a problem, it seems a lot of French Catholics don’t use although they also pray Hail Mary ), not really mine, I just tried to answer the question that has been asked on this thread …

Every since this thread started, I have been fighting the temptation to make this post. I have finally decided to yield to it:
