Okay, so what can we count on to be infallible? I assume you don’t believe it’s the Church… You want proof from the Bible on all these Marian doctrines. I assume that’s because you assert it to be the sole authority…

If not, then what is the authority? Because you are starting to sound like you say the Tradition of the apostles is the authority as well, in which case I agree with you.
It is because some folks here have have refuted this loaded question pretty well I think. Sola Scriptura? I don’t think this accusation flew as well as hoped. The refutation: **Nobody says that Scripture is all that there is. **But being as so, how can it be proven that the Marian doctrines and such were handed down and taught by the Apostles? Not anywhere in Scripture can it be found. Where is it? Like one poster said well, “it’s like trying to nail jello to the wall”. I don’t think this went nearly as well as many thought it would. Protestants have made quite a good case. Much of what the Catholic church believes to be sacred Tradition is not parallel with Scripture and in many cases, not even close.
your bold portions contradict each other.

Again, let me reiterate, in order to hold the belief that the Bible is the only authority, it need to say that fact in the Bible for the argument to hold water. Otherwise it’s just circular reasoning.
So, does it?
I don’t think a thing can be self-authenticating. A claim of inspiration is not in and of itself a guarantee of inspiration. I can claim to be God, but unless there is someone outside of me to verify that, it is simply a claim I made about myself. For this reason, even if the the words “Bible alone” were in Scripture, that alone is not sufficient. There have to be other sources, Tradition for example, that attest to the veracity of the statement.

Please stay on Topic, we are not discussing Marian doctrines 🙂

??? I don’t understand. Why would it or should it say that?? What’s the point?
An example of “refuting this loaded question”???

BrewMax:

If the Bible were like the Koran or the book of mormon with a profit (sic) claiming every iota and tiddle to be the SACRED and HOLY LITERAL mark of the Almighty, then we Catholic types might understand your confusion.

However, since the Bible (as constituted by the early Church, the Catholic Church, prior to the eastern schism in 1054) came AFTER (circa 382 AD) the phenomenal growth of Christianity through the Empire and because of Constantine’s political (God works in many ways) and maternal urgings, AND, because some bishops and others were claiming ‘canonicity’ for their later and goofier ‘gospels,’ for Protestants to claim it is the END ALL and BE ALL of Salvation is to miss the mark by a few parsecs.

It’s similar to claiming that Jesus didn’t and couldn’t go into ‘Hell’ prior to rising from the Dead and that the use of the word ‘Easter’ proves the Church to be pagan.

That’s myopic. That’s narrowminded historical revisionism at its usual American best.

There is NO sui generis authority claiming the OT/NT collection of books we call biblia (or in modern English, Bible) is the SOLE SOURCE of what a Christian should believe and follow.

None, BrewMax, regardless of how you try and twist the ‘proof texting’ to the contrary.

Why won’t someone just answer the question? 😊

I have FAITH. I don’t need the proof. BUT the suggestion was posed that not everything Jesus did was in the bible. The verse says He performed many signs that weren’t written down… I am just saying, what important thing - handed down orally - is still taught today since it wasn’t written down.

And I would appreciate you not calling me ‘honey’… Cupcake. 😛
Singinbeauty,

Everything taught today is taught today because Jesus taught us to do so. And the reason we know to do it today is because the Catholic Church - the pillar and bulwark of the Truth (1 Tim 3:15) - has protected it (bulwark) and upheld it (pillar) all these 2,007 years. How do we know this is true? Jesus promised us that the Church, the Catholic Church, His Church, would withstand the gates of hell.

You ask:"What important thing - handed down orally - is still taught today since it wasn’t written down. "

IF I understand your question - everything we do. The bible did not come about until some 400 years after His death. How did the Church survive until then? Because the twelve - the first Catholic priests - saw to it that it was protected and upheld and they passed it on. Even the Mass is 400 years older than the bible.

Jesus established this Church, which upholds and protects the Truth. We trust in it. We believe in it. It is real. There is nothing flippant or whimsical. It does not change with the tide. These are not slouches we follow - we follow the 2,007 year old wisdom and teaching of Jesus as He wanted it to be for us.

Did you know that “For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory…” is from another Catholic prayer used in the Mass? Everytime you say it it is a nod to your Catholic roots.

To avoid rambling anymore  , I’ll stop now. :o

To quote Bishop Sheen: “You worship God in your way, I’ll worship Him in His.” 😉

Love,

Cupcake.😃

The quote from the verse indicates that Christ performed miracles that weren’t written down… What were they?

This has been the question all along…

After following this thread for a few days now, it has become apparent that:
  1. The topics have strayed more than a cat in heat.
  2. Pride on both Catholic AND Protestant sides has also run ranpant.
  3. If all the posters TRULY, I MEAN TRULY have the compassionate love of OUR, I MEAN OUR Savior, #s 1. and 2. woul NOT have entered into the eqation!
I now want to say that I am a CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN who has a deep and personal relationship with Jesue Christ, and I have come to know:
  1. That anyone who is not against [us] is for us, and that all people confessing to be a Christian ough to be able to recognize another Christian, regardless of creed, by, as scripture says, THEIR ACTIONS.
  2. There have been many great examples of devoted Christians from various denominations, and we can ALL benefit from their teachings and traditions.THEREFORE…
  3. WE MUST BE OF ONE MIND WHEN WE CONVERSE WITH EACHOTHER, BY ANY MEANS, AND SAY EVERYTHING IN LOVE, MAKING SURE NOT TO OFFEND ANOTHER OF GOD’S PEOPLE, AND MOREOVER BE THANKFUL TO HIM FOR ALL THAT WE HAVE IN COMMON, WHICH IS INDESPUTABLE AND FUNDAMENTAL AND LIFE-GIVING, SO THAT WHEN A NEWCOMER [AND THERE ARE SOME OF THEM READING HERE] COMES ALONG, AS 2ND CRINTHIANS SAYS, THEY WILL NOT SAY " THEY ARE ALL SURELY MAD" AND WALK AWAY!
I HAVE TO WONDER HOW ANY OF US CAN LEAD A SOUL TO CHRIST, IF WE CARRY ON SUCH WITH EACHOTHER!!!
MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD BLESS AND TEACH US ALL DAILY…

There is far more to this than most people think. How did the catholic church determine the canon? **They held Councils.**How did they know for example if a particular book was inspired or not? I’m not sure, but I’ll find out and get back to you unless someone here already knows.

Its not a question of authority but evidence. To whom does the evidence point to and why? Who evaluated this evidence?

Are you aware that there are some books of the Bible that we really don’t know with certainty who wrote them?Yes. Who determined this?

Huh? Are you saying it is wrong to discuss these matters?

The quote from the verse indicates that Christ performed miracles that weren’t written down… What were they?
Well, let’s see, it was over 2,000 years ago…and most of us weren’t there to see them… The authors of the books of the bible for some reason chose not to document them, but they felt it was important to note that they did happen. Maybe they felt like they already had a good sampling documented and left the rest.

Why is this important?

Its important because catholics use this as a defense for their belief in the doctrines of the catholic church.

How did the catholic church determine the canon? How did they know for example if a particular book was inspired or not?
The Church set the canon of Scripture, and she did so under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Just as God worked infallibly through men in writing the Bible, He worked infallibly through men in communicating exactly which books comprised it.

You’re falling for let’s change the topic again! 🙂

To study the substance of the claim for its truthfulness. Since your church makes these great claims based on Sacred Traditions then it should be no problem to see what they are and there origins.
You will find the substance of the Teachings in the Catechism.

I think it IS a problem for you to see what their origins are. The problem comes from your preconceived notion that the Bible is the only source of Divine Revelation. As a result, you cannot perceive the substance and origins of the Sacred Teachings of Jesus and the Apostles if they don’t jump out at you from the pages of scripture.🤷
…since i don’t see the evidence for the claim. Its like trying to nail jello to the wall.
Right! and my question to you is, why do you keep trying to nail this jello to the wall? Since you have already made up your mind that these Teachings are nothing more than the “speculations of men” and are not grounded in scripture, why concern yourself with them?
I’m beginning to think that such a thing really doesn’t exist and is something that is introduced in the discussion that has no real substance. I don’t see how it tells catholics anything.
Oh, no, it is not a beginning. You did not think they existed BEFORE The discussion started. Yes, the Sacred Teachings were introduced into the discussion by Catholics who recieve the commandment in 2 Thess. 2:15. They have no substance FOR YOU because you reject this commandment. You cannot see how these Teachings tell Catholics anything because you cannot see that they exist! Of course you believe this way, since you started out with the foundation that no Divine Revelation outside scripture exists. How could you end up with any other conclusion?
i know catholics accept these things as true. However due to the nature of these sacred traditons and the claims made in regard to them, they really don’t support what the apostles taught.
This is a good example of my point. You have already made up your mind that the Sacred Tradition is not what the Apostles taught. For those of us that accept the commandment, this is an absurd notion. We know that the Sacred Writing and the Sacred Oral Teachings originate from the same Apostolic source.
Church goes far beyond what the apostles taught with so many of its doctrines.
What we see in the NT is the mustard seed. What we see in the modern Church is the mustard bush.
I’m interested because the truth matters. If what the catholic church teaches is true, then there must be evidence for it.
I think you have already made up your mind that the NT is the ONLY truth. You have posted this repeatedly. You have also stated that nothing that is taught that you cannot see in the NT is “speculation of men”. It seems that there is no need for you to have any further “evidence” is there?
If you want to claim the sacred traditions support your beliefs then i would think you would want to know the foundation of these traditions i.e. who taught it, when and on what scriptural basis are they using to support the claim.
Well, those who accept the Apostolic traditions know that they are founded upon the teachings of Jesus, our sure foundation. As I have told you many times, and will continue to the limit of my patience, Catholic teaching does not come from “scriptural basis” but from the teaching of Jesus. The NT emanates (comes from) that Apostolic teaching, and is a distillation of the Apostolic Teaching. the Catholic teaching pre-dated the NT by decades.
This is the only way to avoid being deceived by false teachers which the scriptures warned would come into the church itself. Sadly i see catholics unwilling or fearful to hold their church accountable.
Catholics do not consider themselves better than God, ja4. Jesus gave the Church the HS to guide us into all truth, and promised that He would be with us until the end of the age. The Church trusts that God’s arm is not too short to keep His promise. We therefore can fully trust that He is able to preserve us from error, and we do not have to rely on our own limited understanding of the Divine Revelation, as you do.
How does not knowing what the specific traditions are, their origins and there grounding in scripture provide you with a fuller understanding?
This is not the case for Catholics, ja4. We know their origins, and we understand their grounding in scripture. It is you who are lacking the fuller understanding, because you believe the Sacred Traditions are “speculations of men”.
