iserve, my best friend Ronnie, about four years ago, was jobless, alcoholic, and lived in a camper shell that was taken off the back of a truck. Oh, one more thing: he was also a crack head, staying high for days at a time. In other words, hopeless in the terms and thinking of this world. Following is a Reader’s Digest condensed version of a blessed life extracted by the Lord from a sordid life of sin.
He was arrested on an outstanding warrant. He went to jail and de-toxed over the course of the next three days. He fell into a semi-comatose slumber. That’s when the Lord’s love was made manifest. He graciously provided Ronnie with the most shocking and frightening experience of his life - a vision of hell. Ronnie describes horrific abuses that were to occur to him. He received the message that this was his eternity if he did not repent. He begged God for help.
Once released, he sought direction through various churches, was baptized and “born again” three times (!) and searched for a lasting solution. Then, he was lead back to the Catholic faith of his youth. He made a sobbing confession and received many graces. He worked his way into a painting business, got an apartment (in a horrible neighborhood) and prayed and returned to church.
Since, he has moved to a much better place, has his own car, a new job supervising a painting crew, a company truck, and hope. Oh yeah, he is a Eucharistic minister, evangelizes the homeless and addicted, takes them home to help them dry out, takes them to mass with him. In short, he is walking the walk.
Both addictions (alcohol and rock cocaine) are gone. No desire. He is a walking, talking miracle and he praises the Lord constantly. Do not despair over the ups and downs of those who struggle. Prayer is the answer. The Lord did not conceive of them from all eternity just to abandon them at their low points. It is precisely then that he is the closest and most compassionate.
Christ’s peace.
