2 Tim. 1:16-18
This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; 17 but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. 18
The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day—and you know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesus.
Onesiphorus died. Mercy is only for those in Purgatory; not hell.
Luke 12:47-48
And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.
Punishments in purgatory. Many stripes or few stripes. He is with the Master so he is not in hell.
Heb. 12:23
to the general assembly (on earth) and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, (purgatory)
Just men
made perfect. They do not necessarily arrive perfect. They are sometimes made perfect after their deaths. Those in heaven are already perfect, and those in hell can no longer be made perfect. These spirits are in purgatory.
Philippians 2:9-10
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father.
Here Paul mention three places where Jesus is worshiped.
In heaven (those saints in heaven), on earth (us), and under the earth (purgatory). The damned in hell do not worship God
My favorite:
1 Peter 3:18-20
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that
He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the
days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
**
Jesus went to preach to the
spirits in prison.** These are the people who repented while they were drowning while Noah was safe on the ark. They had already been there for 2000 earth years before Jesus went to preach to them sometime between His death on Friday and His resurrection on Sunday. This prison is purgatory. They had no time to do works worthy of repentance
Matthew 3:8; hence their long stay.
