Why would having a period, which is a bodily function that God created for women, make it not permissible for them to pray?
Women can PRAY during their periods.

They are exempted from the RITUAL prayer, as a mercy, to give them a break during those days which can be trying for some women.

But of course women can PRAY–CALL ON GOD whenever they want, any time of day, in any condition, whereever they are. Allah says in the Qur’an that he listens to the prayer of EVERYONE who calls on Him.

Let me ask you this…
Let me answer you this. 🙂
is it fair for non-Muslims to have to follow Sharia law?
The answer is: NO, and non-Muslims DO NOT HAVE TO follow Shari’ah law. 🙂
Is it fair for women not to be able to drive,
NO! This is not a teaching of Islam, either.
attend the same schools as men,
YES! This is fair, and many women here in the United States PREFER to attend all-girls schools. And it’s often easier for girls in these schools to concentrate on studying rather than boys. In Islam, both men and women are supposed to educate themselves. There is absolutely no excuse for women to have a poorer quality education. But if separate schools were all-bad, we wouldn’t have all-girls schools here, but we do.
or to not be able to leave the house with a man of the household or a headcovering?
I think you mean WITHOUT. The answer is MAYBE. In some places, this could be for her protection. In the USA, for example, this DOES NOT APPLY, that she needs a man with her. WEARING A HEADSCARF does not imply unfairness, especially if she actually WANTS to wear it.
These western forms of Islam are watered down versions, and are spoon fed to a western mindset (just the same as watered down catechesis has affected the Catholic / Christian mindset and secularized our world more than it already is).
This is what you want to believe, but you will find the same teachings about Islam in Cairo as in Baltimore, in Riyadh as Los Angeles.
Sure, I will agree with you that there are some laws that are Eternal, and unchangeable, but also in our modern society there are laws and regulations that we need that absolutely would not have made any sense to a man of Muhammad’s time.
In the same way, Shari’ah is adaptable. We don’t use camels nowadays, but we do need traffic regulations!
The difference between Christianity and Islam is that we view the Bible as a rule to live by, and from it we get our western form of laws and courts, but we realize that there are some topics of the age the laws of the Bible just won’t cover and how the world has changed since the time that it was written. The laws of the Bible are not liquid, whereas secular laws are liquid. Secular laws don’t all need to be followed for salvation to be kept by the Christian believer. Is there a guideline in the Quran for laws such as these?
Yes, actually Shari’ah is a kind of grid, to help find an answer to some situations. It is very adaptable, and there is authority placed in the leader of the state. Some laws are firm, for all times, with punishments legislated by God. It is for the protection of the society. There are also other issues which have more fluid kinds of laws to deal with the particular environment in
Shari’ah.

I have several other questions:

If you don’t live in a Muslim country, have you experienced prejudice or suspicion because of being Muslim, wearing the veil, public fear of terrorists, etc?
Only from my Catholic brother-in-law. 😦
Do you know if members of the Nation of Islam in the US are considered by other Muslims to be true Muslims? (I don’t know one way or the other, no ax to grind, just curious.)
The Nation of Islam teaches certain things which are clearly in violation of Islam, like God existing incarnate and another Messiah after Jesus. So they are not considered “true Muslims” because of these basic underlying beliefs. However, most NoI Muslims have embraced orthodox Sunni Islam and are considered true Muslims, despite any past affiliation with NOI, and there is a branch of NOI which has broken off from mainstream NOI and also adopted orthodox Islamic belies so they too are “true Muslims.”
Based on Islamic teachings, can Muslims peacefully live with those of other faiths in a country like the US which in its constitution forbids having a national religion?
ABSOLUTELY! 🙂 First of all, there are certain rulings which apply to Muslims living in a state ruled by Muslims, and OTHER rulings for Muslims living in a state ruled by non-Muslims. It is allowed for a number of reasons, and the American tolerance for religion is part of why it’s so easy for Muslims to live in and love the United States–because they are free to practice their religion, without an overbearing government, like unfortunately some Muslim rulers have become, forcing religion on the people–that is not islamic at all.

Re: not praying while menstruating.

I understand about the official prayer 5 times a day. Do you also pray informally, and is that forbidden during that time?

I mean, do you also talk to Allah? For instance, seeing a beautiful sunset or seeing your child do something which amazes you, do you say in your heart, thank you Allah? For Christians I think this is very common because for us God is immanent, within our souls, as well as transcendent.
“Informal” prayer is ALWAYS allowed. Any time of day, whether menstruating, having sex, whatever. Any time, any one, any where can call on God.

And I do mean TALKING to God. A lot of times I realize something for which I am very grateful (like fingers and a keyboard to type up a long paper in a short amount of time!) and I can immediately thank God. Or I see a beautiful sunset, or a cute child, I can glorify God, praise God, thank God. There are very common words for this, subhanallah (glorified is God) and alhamdulillah (all praise is for God) and even, if we do something that is wrong or a sin, astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from God).🙂

Much that I learn about Islam has some similarities to Orthodox Judaism. For example, Jewish people have Kosher laws, they pray at set periods of time(although they can pray anytime), the women of certain Orthodox Jewish groups cover their hair upon marriage etc.
In fact, orthodox Jews and Muslims have VERY MUCH in common. I see this as very natural, as Orthodox Jews try to observe their religion as it comes from God without trying to change it. As a Muslim I believe that God revealed a way of life to Moses to teach his people, and that this same way of life has been prescribed for all of mankind, not just Jews, after Muhammad. Because it’s all from God, I think it’s natural that it should be so strikingly similar.
I was just wondering if some of the converts to Islam ever considered converting to Orthodox Judaism?
The reason I converted to Islam was because of conviction in the authenticity of the Qur’an. Judaism fails in two ways–first, Jews do not acknowledge the teachings of Jesus, and that he was the promised Messiah and secondly, that they do not acknowledge the teachings of Muhammad and that he was also a promised messenger and that Islam is for all of mankind, not just Jews.
I know that there are different sects(is that the word I want?) of Muslims. Among the Muslim participants on this thread what Islamic sect/denomination do you each belong to?
I am Sunni… 85% of Muslims in the world are Sunni.
Do you ever think that there will be a Islamic democracy? I ask because I have read that Islam is incompatable with democracy.
Islam is compatible with democracy to a degree. As a Muslim, I can live in a democracy (and I DO) but I still will take the law of God over the law of the land, which is the law of men. For example, Muslims are forbidden from drinking alcohol. The democracy we live in does not forbid alcohol… but it is forbidden for me. Shari’ah can even exist in democratic form–the first leader of the Islamic “state” was chosen democratically. That is, the people got together and picked who they thought would be the best ruler. And that is the way that (Sunni) Muslims believe that a leader should be chosen–by the people, who is most qualified.

Tawheedah–can you please set yourself to receive private messages? I tried to send you one but it said you had turned that feature off or something. JAK.

You guys have been more than kind to us on this thread, and I thank you. For bevities sake, I will put much in one post.

In Muslim nations, non-Muslims ARE subject to Shiara law. I know that the laws themselves state that non-Muslims are not to be forced to follow them, but it is ignored. It is the same as the no compulsion in religion in the Koran. It is quoted to us but ignored in practice.

I am glad to know that a woman’s word is enough to convict a man of rape, assuming that there is forensic evidence. Tell me this, is there a concept of rape within marriage? In other words, if a woman does not fulfill her husband’s desires, is he allowed to take her without her concent?

If men are promised to women, and women to men in paradise, is it safe to say that Islamic paradise is more like a wild party? Isn’t alcohol allowed in paradise as well?

Indeed, this is the great injustice of the Third World, severe oppression. You are right, that it is ignored–yet we quote it to you. We quote it because that is ISLAM. I cannot vouch for all the rulers of Muslim countries, for whom POWER is more important than HONESTY and the commands of their God. Muslims, you will find, are very dissatisfied with the rule in supposed “Muslim countries” like Pakistan–Musharraf suspended the constitution and replaced the supreme court with lackeys!–and Egypt where Mubarak is known to have dissidents tortured–TORTURED!–and I could go on. It is evil, it is unjust, it is oppression, and I condemn it in the strongest terms.

Glad you asked! I actually do not know the answer to this question… the answer is definitely not “yes” but I don’t know if it is a flat “no” or a “maybe.” So I’m going to ask a friend of mine who is in his last semester of studying Shari’ah, I know he’s writing a research on how men are obligated to live ‘in good relations’ with their wives. There is a kind of injustice if a woman is deliberately refusing intercourse with her husband without an excuse (if she is genuinely ill, on her period, etc., these are all VALID and perfect excuses) then she is doing injustice to him, and to the marriage. If he forces her, he does injustice to her, and to the marriage. If either party is unhappy (sexually) in the marriage, they are entitled to a divorce, because this is an important part of marriage. And sorry for the very long answer BUT I will try to ask my friend, if you can wait a few days?
If men are promised to women, and women to men in paradise, is it safe to say that Islamic paradise is more like a wild party? Isn’t alcohol allowed in paradise as well?
I never heard that alcohol was allowed. Generally, Muslims look at Paradise as a life, just like there is a life on earth. And part of life is Companionship. Both men and women are promised to have companions, spouses, etc. (Men for women, women for men.) But this is only one tiny tiny part of how Paradise is described. The ultimate blessing is really the pleasure of God.

Muslims generally don’t focus on the men and women and stuff… it tends to be picked up by the West and exaggerated to an “unholy” extent.

These are commonly misunderstood “ideas,” even some Muslims don’t understand. The ayah in the Qur’an 4:34 is a guide for husbands to follow before resorting to divorce, for a woman who is very disobedient in her religion–and this is a grave thing, not just “won’t listen to them” like you said. Moreover, the ayah actually is preventing any sort of domestic abuse. Rather than allowing the husband to hit his wife, he first has to instruct her, tell her what she is doing is wrong. If she persists, then he is to leave her bed. And if she still persists, the last resort before a divorce is to supposedly “hit” her, although some scholars even take the opinion that “hit” actually means for the husband to have intercourse with his wife again. Others allow it means hitting but in such a way that no mark is left, and not on the face, in such a way that is merely symbolic, so lightly as if being hit by a toothbrush.

Regarding women’s supposed “deficiency” the hadith is saying that women perform less prayers than men do–in general it’s true, women have a lighter obligation in regards to prayer, because they do not have to pray while menstruating. And about intelligence, the suggestion is that women are more sensitive to their emotions than logic–which is a benefit in its own way, and also a physiological truth. It’s not so much an insult really–he was encouraging the women to give in charity.
Hmmm…beating one’s wife is a component of sharia law. Do you reject sharia law and the quranic verses and hadiths it is based on.

If the woman has lost her muslim faith according to sharia she is to be killed. Muhammed said “Anyone who changes their religion (i.e. leave islam), kill them”.

Here are some quotes where a woman’s “deficiency” is based on:

Tabari I:280 “Allah said, ‘It is My obligation to make Eve bleed once every month as she made this tree bleed. I must also make Eve stupid, although I created her intelligent.’ Because Allah afflicted Eve, all of the women of this world menstruate and are stupid.”

Qur’an 4:11 “Allah directs you in regard of your Children’s (inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females… These are settled portions ordained by Allah.”

Muslim:B1N142 “‘O womenfolk, you should ask for forgiveness for I saw you in bulk amongst the dwellers of Hell.’ A wise lady said: Why is it, Allah’s Apostle, that women comprise the bulk of the inhabitants of Hell? The Prophet observed: ‘You curse too much and are ungrateful to your spouses. You lack common sense, fail in religion and rob the wisdom of the wise.’ Upon this the woman remarked: What is wrong with our common sense? The Prophet replied, ‘Your lack of common sense can be determined from the fact that the evidence of two women is equal to one man. That is a proof.’”

Bukhari:V3B48N826 “The Prophet said, ‘Isn’t the witness of a woman equal to half of that of a man?’ The women said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘This is because of the deficiency of a woman’s mind.’”

Is the sharia mandate to kill those who convert from islam or mock allah (apostates) compatible with democracy?

Is the 3rd class dhimmi status non-mulisms in muslim countries, including reduced rights and the lack of freedom of religion, compatible with democracy?

🙂

I already explained these things. Except the protected status afforded to non-Muslims. If non-Muslims are living in a Muslim state, they do not have to serve in the military–but the government is responsible for PROTECTING all the people, including non-Muslims. Because they don’t serve in the military, and because the Muslims pay a mandatory charity, non-Muslims do pay a tax.

However, there was an Islamic ruler (who it was escapes me now) under whom the non-Muslims were paying this tax, but when the ruler was no longer able to protect all the people, he no longer forced them to pay the tax–because he wasn’t able to do his duty to protect them.

And the Qur’an tells Muslims how to deal with non-Muslims, in 60:8–using the same language for treatment of non-Muslims as used for treatment for parents–with kindness, righteousness, and justice. These are non-Muslims who aren’t fighting–which make up MOST of the non-Muslims.

When people here like to quote Qur’an, they are quoting verses which talk about war, because people make war against Muslims, and Muslims are allowed to make war against people who OPPRESS others.

The United States brought war to Iraq? Why? They say the ruler of Iraq was oppressing the people. The United States brought war to Afghanistan. Why? Because the rulers of Afghanistan were oppressing the people.

Islam is a way of life for individuals AND societies, and there are rules of law just like countries have rules against treason and rules on how to fight a war. 🙂

PS–inheritance

If a man dies and leaves a brother, and a daughter, the daughter will get HALF of the inheritance, and the brother will get HALF of the inheritance.

In cases where a brother gets more than his sisters, it is because he becomes responsible for taking care of them.

Now coming to the topic, please follow some rules. Discussion should be as per sacred books, i.e. Quran and bible or Quran versus bible. We should put both books in front of us and speak with some reference. If there is anything bad in the Quran about ladies then the christian friends should show something good about the ladies from the bible. I believe they will find nothing in the bible.
What does the bible have to do with the quran? If something does/does not exist in the bible what impact does that have on the quran? Why cannot we use our God given reason to judge whether the quran is objectively good? BTW I thought islam preaches that the bible is corrupt? Why would you want to use a corrupt book to prove something about the quran?

Sounds like the way black slaves were treated during slavery. The slave master was responsible for protecting the slaves as well. Now it makes sense.

Everyone who wants to learn about Sharia Law should get a book called Reliance of the Traveler. It is a handbook of sharia written for muslims by muslims. It is very enlightening on how a man has FULL rights to his wifes body, is allowed to beat her and what constitutes apostasy which you can be executed for.

Islam and sharia does not respect women, life or non-muslims.

🙂

When people here like to quote Qur’an, they are quoting verses which talk about war, because people make war against Muslims, and Muslims are allowed to make war against people who OPPRESS others.
These verses are quoted because the peaceful ones that Muhammed wrote before he took over Medina are abrogated by the violent verses written when he had the power to make war. These are also the verses that have inspired muslims throughout the centuries to murder non-muslims (e.g. 65 million hindus) and violently conquer non-muslim lands.

🙂

If a man dies and leaves a brother, and a daughter, the daughter will get HALF of the inheritance, and the brother will get HALF of the inheritance.

In cases where a brother gets more than his sisters, it is because he becomes responsible for taking care of them.
Here is the quran verse that deals with inheritance. I have copied 3 translations since muslims usually claim a non-muslims cannot possibly understand the quran. This is what it says to me

So if the parents die and there is one brother and one sister the brother gets 2/3 and the sister gets 1/3, according to the quran verse below.

If there more than 2 sisters then they get 2/3. Which means each sister would get an equal share of the 2/3’s portion. So 3 sisters would each get 1/3 X 2/3 = 2/9 share each while the lone brother would get 1/3.

In non-muslim countries 2/9 is LESS than 1/3. In the above case if they were all equal then all the kids would get 1/4 each. I guess in the muslim logic 2/9=1/4=1/3

One example of this inequality from my sharia law handbook is:
Code:
          total shares: 3
grandfather 2
sister 1

004.011
YUSUFALI: Allah (thus) directs you as regards your Children’s (Inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females: if only daughters, two or more, their share is two-thirds of the inheritance; if only one, her share is a half. For parents, a sixth share of the inheritance to each, if the deceased left children; if no children, and the parents are the (only) heirs, the mother has a third; if the deceased Left brothers (or sisters) the mother has a sixth. (The distribution in all cases ('s) after the payment of legacies and debts. Ye know not whether your parents or your children are nearest to you in benefit. These are settled portions ordained by Allah; and Allah is All-knowing, Al-wise.
PICKTHAL: Allah chargeth you concerning (the provision for) your children: to the male the equivalent of the portion of two females, and if there be women more than two, then theirs is two-thirds of the inheritance, and if there be one (only) then the half. And to each of his parents a sixth of the inheritance, if he have a son; and if he have no son and his parents are his heirs, then to his mother appertaineth the third; and if he have brethren, then to his mother appertaineth the sixth, after any legacy he may have bequeathed, or debt (hath been paid). Your parents and your children: Ye know not which of them is nearer unto you in usefulness. It is an injunction from Allah. Lo! Allah is Knower, Wise.
SHAKIR: Allah enjoins you concerning your children: The male shall have the equal of the portion of two females; then if they are more than two females, they shall have two-thirds of what the deceased has left, and if there is one, she shall have the half; and as for his parents, each of them shall have the sixth of what he has left if he has a child, but if he has no child and (only) his two parents inherit him, then his mother shall have the third; but if he has brothers, then his mother shall have the sixth after (the payment of) a bequest he may have bequeathed or a debt; your parents and your children, you know not which of them is the nearer to you in usefulness; this is an ordinance from Allah: Surely Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Your welcome tawheedah, you also have been patient.
Remember these verses in Mark 1; 40 " A leper approached him with a request, kneeling down as he addressed him; “If you will to do so, you can cure me.” 41; Moved with pity, Jesus stetched out his hand, touched him, and said; “I do will it. Be cured.” 42 The leprosy left him then and there, and hew was cured.

Do you still have your bible? Mark 8; 27-30
27 Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples this question: “Who do people say that I am?” 28 They replied, “Some, John the Baptizer, others, Elijah, **still others,**one of the **prophets.” **“And you”, he went on to ask, “who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah!”

This episode marks a turning point in Mark’s portrait of Jesus in his public ministry. Varities of popular opinion concerning him concur in regarding him as a prophet. The disciples, by contrast, believe him to be the Messiah.
Remeber, Tawheedah! Remeber!
Jesus is the high priest he took on our infirmities and impurities because of his name we come before God (Allah)
I believe you can remember , You will remember think!
Blessings, in Christ
