There are different theories as to their origins.
I think they likely emerged on the scene originally as plasmids - genetic material that a bacterium will transfer to another to share an adaptability to different threats in their environment.
Plasimids probably started off as transposons, transposable elements which are sequences of DNA that reposition themselves within a genome.
We can observe and clarify their attributes, but when we begin to consider what these things are in themselves, it gets a bit weird. If one thinks of them as being processes that expand the features inherent in living things and as part of an environmental whole which seeks equilibrium and have a being in themselves, the orginals could be thought of as related to a species of angels, doing God’s will.
Those that chose to do their own thing, contrary to what they were created for, resulted in viuses.
We have learned to use viruses to treat certain genetic diseases.
Just some food for thought as to what this is all really about.
