Hey, Seven Sorrows, my friend used your song ‘Hope’ at the end of a talk he gave called ‘Working for Christ’ on a Christian retreat weekend (-: It sounded alright.

Um, about the original question. One thing to notice is that Metallica doesn’t have any ‘happy’ songs. I used to listen to songs like Fade to Black all the time because I was depressed. That’s one thing to watch out for - the reason why someone listens to music. But these days I still listen to Metallica - not because of any bad reason but because I like their imagery and structure.

Ok this is pretty close to a happy song (or at least as close as you’re gonna get.) 😃

Nothing Else Matters Lyrics

So close no matter how far
couldn’t be much more from the heart
forever trusting who we are
and nothing else matters

never opened myself this way
life is ours, we live it our way
all these words I don’t just say
and nothing else matters

trust I seek and I find in you
every day for us something new
open mind for a different view
and nothing else matters

never cared for what they do
never cared for what they know
but I know

so close no matter how far
couldn’t be much more from the heart
forever trusting who we are
and nothing else matters

never cared for what they do
never cared for what they know
but I know

never opened myself this way
life is ours, we live it our way
all these words I don’t just say

trust I seek and I find in you
every day for us something new
open mind for a different view
and nothing else matters

never cared for what they say
never cared for games they play
never cared for what they do
never cared for what they know
and I know

so close no matter how far
couldn’t be much more from the heart
forever trusting who we are
no nothing else matters

Personally I like The Call of Ktulu and Orion (-: No lyrics to worry about there!
But yea, the Black album has got a few which aren’t too bad. Like Wherever I May Roam. Also, My Friend of Misery is alright - that song taught me a lot about myself, almost as if it was addressed to me.

Marie Margaret:
Looking for advice here. My son was cautioned about listening to certain hard rock bands (Metallica) and told not to have that type of music in our home. Am I right to be concerned here?
First off: Your home, your son, your rules. If you don’t want certain types of whatever in your house, that’s your prerogative.

Next, caution is warranted. You know your son. We do not. What would’ve been a bad influence on me at his age might not be a bad influence on him. Or, it might be an even worse influence.

If, in your judgment, Metallica (for example) is not appropriate for your son, then so be it.

– Mark L. Chance.

If your son is into metal, Metallica isn’t a bad band to like. The newest stuff, off of Garage Inc (which is almost all covers of other peoples music) and St. Anger, contains some foul language and frankly lost Metallica a LOT of fans (the albums frankly suck).

The albums Ride the Lightening, And Justice for All, Master of Puppets, & the self titled ‘Metallica’ (also known as the Black Album for the plain black cover) are all decent albums with little objectionable material. Metallica has always had some really rockin insrtumentals (especially Orion…I can listen to that on repeat for a loooooong time). No cussing on these albums (unlike some of the later ones), and fairly decent lyrics.

Just give 'em a read. Make sure you actually read the lyrics, not just listen to them. Songs like ‘Blackened’ sound a lot worse than they are…some of the lyrics are lost in the music, and you end up with the wrong impression. Here’s an example:
(The song is about Nuclear War)

Blackened is the end
Winter it will send
Throwing all you see
Into obscurity

Death of mother earth
Never a rebirth
Evolution’s end
Never will it mend

Never

Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Color our world blackened

Bustering of earth
Terminate its worth
Deadly nicotine
Kills what might have been

Callous frigid chill
Nothing left to kill
Never seen before
Breathing nevermore

Never

Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Color our world blackened

Blackened

Opposition…contradiction…premonition…compromise
Agitation…violation…mutilation…planet dies
Darkest color
Blistered earth
True death of life
Termination…expiration…cancellation…human race
Expectation…liberation…population…lay to waste
See our mother
Put to death
See our mother die (A lot of the preceeding verse is lost in the music, so many people just hear the ‘See your mother Die’ and freak out because they have no reference to the rest of the song)

Smouldering decay
Take her breath away
Millions of our years
In minutes disappears

Darkening in vain
Decadence remains
All is said and done
Never is the sun

Never

Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Fire
Is the outcome of hypocrisy
Darkest potency
In the exit of humanity
Color our world blackened

Blackened

Hello Marie Margaret,

I’d like to share an experience I had relating to heavy metal music.

I started off listening listening to AC/DC and was instantly hooked. I thought it was the best thing since the sliced pan. After that I started getting into heavier and heavier music and ended up listening to the likes of Slayer and Death. During that time my faith in the Catholic Church went down the drain, I hardly every went to mass and stopped going to confession.

To cut a long story short, I found my faith again after a visit to Lourdes (thanks be to God!) and realized that I needed to get rid of any music/books that were in oposition to the will of God. So I tore up all my new-age, yoga, taoism (I had no Catholic books apart from the bible!) and threw them all out. I then got all my heavy metal records (about 60) of them and piled them all up.
I then got an axe and smashed them into smithereens! I actually found this very difficult to do. My wife was telling me that I was mad and I felt a very stronge urge to stop smashing them…

Shortly after this I knelt down in front of our small Altar which has a statue of Jesus and Mary and cried like a big baby! I felt like a prodigal son who had come home to his loving parents after many years of sin. It was a very emotional and uplifting experience. I begged God for forgiveness for having turned my back on him for so long.

I firmly believe that heavy metal music is nothing short of diabolical! It turns us away from God and leads us into sin. Try reading the lyrics from any Slayer album, they’re absolutely satanic and anti-christian - so disgusting.

Any don’t forget to pray for your son.

God bless,
Noel.

Noel I’m glad you found your way back to Christ. And if metal drove you away from Him by all means smash your cd’s to peices. Anything that drives us away from Christ should be purged from our lives. There are definately satanic bands out there but I do not agree that all metal is diabolical. Alot is misunderstood.

Some examples of lyrics by Megadeth.
Old, weak, and feeble,
But the lesson taught to me,
To stay away from evil,
She doesn’t care for me.

She haunts me in my sleep
Devil’s Island by Megadeth
Sinister’s the word,
As the demon’s take their fill.
An orgy’s taking place,
Human blood will spill.
An act of worship,
As they conceive the ghouls.
Satan has their souls,
They sing pagan tunes.
The ceremony,
Is sure to be cursed.
They ask for his blessings,
But, down comes the worst
.
Their bodies, soulless,
A corpse from the grave.
Their minds are helpless,
And, no-one can save
Bad Omen by Megadeth

Although Satan and demons are mentioned in the lyrics it’s hardly glorifying satan or evil.
I take what you love, and leave you in tears
I imprison your soul, your hopes are my games
I strip you of pride, my promise is in vain
While you burn at the stake I dance with the flames
I bring poverty, sickness and death
A worthless handshake, the slickest thief, I steal your wealth
I answer your prayers for greed and lust
More than evil, I laugh at your trust
I am more powerful than all the armies of the world
I am more violent than violence, more deadly than death
I have destroyed more men than all the nation’s wars
I am relentless, unpredictable, waiting for your last breath
Evil, more evil than violence
Violent, more violent than death
Deadly, more deadly than man
I am yeah, yeah, I’m evil I am
My kingdom corrupt with dissent
Your sins erupt by my intent
I loathe your prayer, I wallow in sin
Let the nightmare begin
Prince of darkness, your satanic highness
Prince of darkness, the devilish serpent, the dreaded Lucifer
Prince of darkness
Prince of Darkness by Megedeth

Not uplifting by any stretch but certainly not making satanism look inviting either. A parent scanning the titles of the songs could easily think Megedeth was satanic.

Growing up in the 80’s Ozzy was considered Satanic and evil. Kind of funny now seeing he has his own tv show -who saw that one coming? His music was often under attack too.

But here are some examples of Ozzy “the satan worshipper”.
Crazy,but that’s how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
Maybe it’s not too late
To learn how to love
And forget how to hate
Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne

Here is the often totally misunderstood song “Suicide Solution”. The word solution is meant as a liquid and Ozzy speaks of alcohol as a “suicide solution.”
Wine is fine
But whiskey’s quicker
suicide is slow with liquer
Now you live inside a bottle
The reaper’s travelling at full throttle
It’s catching you but you don’t see
The reaper is you and the reaper is me
Here’s some other Ozzy lyrics
You make promise of protection
To a future after life
To the final resurrection
And to eternal paradise
But then I’m blinded with temptation
And to every mortal sin
Is it God that sits there waiting’
Or will the darkness suck me in
Facing Hell
Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today
Will the sun rise up tomorrow bringing peace in any way’
Must the world live in the shadow of atomic fear’
Can they win the fight for peace or will they disappear’
So you children of the world,
Listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in
Spread the words today
Show the world that love is still alive
You must be brave
Children of The Grave

When the Children Cry by White Lion (80’s hair-metal band)

little child
dry your crying eyes
how can I explain
the fear you feel inside
cause you were born
into this evil world
where mas is killing man
and no one knows just why
what we have become
just look what we have done
all that we destroyed
you must build again

when the children cry
let them know we tried
cause when the children sing
then the new world begins

little child
you must show the way
to a better day
for all the young
cause you were born
for all the world to see
that we all can live
with love and peace
no more presidents
and all the wars will end
one united world
under god

when the children cry
let them know we tried
cause when the children sing
then the new world begins

what we have become
just look what we have done
all that we destroyed
you must build again
no more presidents
and all the wars will end
one united world
under god

when the children cry
let them know we tried
when the children fight
let them know it ain’t right
when the children pray
let them know the way
cause when the children sing
then the new world begins

Ok, after reading this forum I’m glad to see I’m not the only Catholic to enjoy listening to metal! I do think it’s funny how people actually think listening to Metallica will turn you away from God. Music tends to be a scapegoat for people to place blame. I’ve been listening to metal since I was 18 and I’m more into now than I ever was at age 25. I also attend church on a weekly basis, donate time, money, clothing, etc to charities, and help anyone out without expecting anything in return. I enjoy listening to Korn, Staind, Disturbed, Flaw, Chevelle, and Mudvayne. I enjoy their music because it shows emotion, which is hard to find in today’s music. When I’m stressed out, or if I want to get energized, metal helps me release that anger and turn it into positive energy. The lyrics mean nothing to me, for the most part. If I hear some lyrics that I don’t agree with, I’ll just omit that part when I’m singing along, but I will not throw the cd out and listen to John Tesh or Kenny G since they do not swear. (note: I have nothing against John Tesh or Kenny G… they’re just at the other end of the spectrum!)

It is possible your kid doesn’t even know what the lyrics say. My first cassette was Vanilla Ice (unedited). I listened to that all the time and enjoyed it until I heard my friends talk about how dirty one of the songs were. I think talking is the best thing to do, not censoring. In my opinion, the kids that end up being corrupt do not do so because of the music they listen to, it’s because mom and dad didn’t show their love, or get involved in their life. Or they got too involved and started censoring what they listen to, which made them rebel. Metal tends to be an outlet for “abandoned” youth, which I think causes the bad stereotype.

And out of curiosity, what would you prefer to have your child listen to? Or what does he/she watch on tv, or at the movie theatre? Black-Eyed-Peas are popular, read their lyrics. 50 Cent? Even country music… “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” was popular a few months ago. How about Britney Spears, Ashlee Simpson… great role models there 😦

I guess my point is you can try censoring all you want, but unless they’re locked in your basement all their childhood, they’ll be exposed to bad influences, and it’s up to you to make them aware they are bad. My parents were understanding like that. Sure, I’m no saint, but I think I’m better spiritually than many of my non-metal friends that have abandoned God or the Church.

Two more things… 1) why does everyone think Korn is evil? Even Head (the guy that left Korn) mentioned that, but I don’t see it… possibly because I’m wrapped up in the music and not so much the lyrics. And 2) I suggest the Metallica Haters watch the video “One.” Very emotional for anyone that has gone through war or lost a loved one in war. The video has some audio overlays and scenes (from an old movie, I think) that are sad, involving a guy who was badly injured and wants to end his life.

“Johnny Got His Gun”, based on the novel of the same name. The song “One” was inspired by the book/movie.

I’m suprised no one has mentioned Metallica’s Bible based classic Creeping Death, based on the final plague God sent on Egypt before the exodus:

Die by my hand
As I creep across the land
Killing first-born man

Whoever mentioned that the Bible is PG was right, but it’s all about context.

My musical taste runs the gambit from Motzart to the Dead Kennedys and old school punk. Much of it is certainly not recommended listening for the faithful, though. Heck, my first band covered Fade to Black, one of only a couple covers we played.

Then I grew up. Mostly.

I am 13, and I try to keep away from certain kinds of music, it is just not the influence I want to have on myself, and I feel it will show in the classroom, church… You are the parent, though, whatever you say goes…

behold the handmaid of the Lord…

Be it done unto me according to Thy Word…

There is one Catholic Metal Band if anyone’s interested it’s called Seven Sorrows:

www.sevensorrows.com

you can download their music free. I bought their CD. Maybe offer that to your son as an option.

If you want to look up lyrics, here’s a site: Metallica Lyrics

Another great place to find Catholic Rock is www.phatmass.org.

It’s interesting to read this semi-old thread. I go to a catholic school and our old priest was a huge Metallica fan. My one friend even saw him in the mall with a Metallica shirt on. Makes me wonder how bad it can really be.

I don’t think (but I do not know for sure) that Metallica is as bad as some of the stuff out there. Like Korn and others like them. Korn is very bad. The disobedience thing is trouble. The next time he plays it in the house I would just take out the cd and snap in half. Sure he’ll be mad, but he’ll get over it. After he loses one or two cd’s I would bet he’d stop bringing them into the house.
And this solves the problem? So basically as long as you dont know your kid is doing something that makes it ok, right?

Flawed thinking when dealing with a teenager.

You might want to research Metallicas lyrics first… if ya need alink i’ll give ya one.
