*so from our point of view , we have one book written by group of people (most of them are unkown) and jesus never read it because it was written after him
and the second book is from God directly according to our beliefs , that’s why it’s reasonable for us to trust what was written by God *

This is not a very good arguement. Mohammad never read the Quran, it was compiled some 43 years later. Mohammad didn’t write the Quran.

What muslims have is one person with no witnesses saying he recieved a revelation from allah and then the message is is that it is from allah!! LOL!

Ah yes, some Mexican guy drawing a picture of the Virgin Mary on his cloak, claiming it was a ‘miracle’, and displaying it for the world to see. What a miracle!
Let me ask you this: were there any witnesses when this picture magically appeared onto the cloth? Did anyone see the image instantly transfix itself with their own eyes?
Is it possible the cloth was changed when Diego took it off? Of course.
Could they all be lying or maybe victims of a horrible prank? Possibly.
The whole thing is a hoax, in my opinion.
How stupid do you think the rest of the world is? Honestly?
This is the age of SCIENCE. The 13th century is gone, amigo. 😃
I can see now why the Protestants keep ragging on the Catholics all the time. It’s because of guys like you that turn the whole faith into a laughingstock.
Enough with the cheap insults! Your pride and arrogance are beginning to show. This is so typical of Muslims since Islam has nothing else to offer. Its proof of “validity” always consists in attacking the faith of others.

As for our faith being a laughingstock as you call it, what do you think of this?

“When Eve became heavy with her first pregnancy, Satan came to her before she gave birth and said, ‘Eve, what is that in your womb?’ She said, ‘I do not know.’ He asked, ‘Where will it come out from-your nose, your eye, or your ear?’ She replied, ‘I do not know.’” Tabari I:321 😃

*secondly , i can’t depend in historical analysis because i don’t believe that mohammed (pbuh) read the gospels before his prophethood , Gospels wasn’t his reference *

No proof one way or the other

thirdly , if you will depend on historical analysis , then allows me to involve all sects and all books which written about jesus and before quran , your beliefs about jesus wasn’t the only version in the first 300 years , do you know that ?

Yes everyone can read the Apocrypha, false and spurious texts-they are on-line and at many if not all public libraries.

We know that these are false because they were written too late after the time of Jesus, or none of the early Church fathers quoted them.

The Apocrypha just doesn’t have enough proof to back them up the way the Gospel of the Holy Bible has.

The realm of science is doing much to prove the authenticity of Catholic miracles, not discredit them. See Lanciano.

1. Islam is the ONLY ancient religion that has its holy book unchanged from the beginning. This is a proven historical fact. The Quran was written down during Muhammad’s time and thousands of Muhammad’s disciples memorized it by heart and passed it down orally. Other ancient religions follow changed, corrupted texts.

Bare assertion fallacy. The Dead Sea Scrolls confirm the Septuagint to be accurate, and vice versa. There are over 1,000 codexes that confirm the New Testament has remained unchanged.

Greg Petersen said:
2. Unlike Hinduism or Christianity, Islam believes in ONE UNIFIED WHOLE GOD, just like the Prophets of old like Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jeremiah, etc.

It seems you need to do some brushing up on your knowledge of the Trinity.

Here are a few good sources:

Greg Petersen said:
3. Muhammad has the authority to say he is the Seal of the Prophets because God gave him that authority. Who are you to question that authority based on a corrupted scripture? Muhammad demonstrated this with numerous miracles and wise, noble, and gentle leadership. He was a righteous and virtuous king in every sense of the word.

Bare assertion fallacy, and circular logic.

"Muhammad has the authority to say he is the “Seal of the Prophets” because he said God gave him the authority.

The same could be said about Bahá’u’lláh, or Joseph Smith. They all said they were prophets, too.

Greg Petersen said:
4. In essence, Islam doesn’t say anything ‘new’, like Christianity. We follow the religion of our father, Abraham. Simple and pure. We worship one God and we follow His Law.

Sure it does. Mohammed originally had you pray facing Jerusalem, but now pray towards a giant cube with a meteorite in it, which also was a center of worship for pagans.

Muslims follow the 613 mitzvah? That would surprise me.

Greg Petersen:
  1. There IS proof that Jesus prophesied Muhammad. During his early years, many Christian Ebionite monks told Muhammad that he was the ‘promised one’ that they had been told about. The Ebionites were a non-Trinitarian sect of Christianity that believed Jesus was a man, not God. They likely kept Jesus’ true message in their hearts.
Yet another bare assertion fallacy. The early Church Fathers contend the Ebionites were heretics. Given the choice between you and their contemporaries, I will stick with the early Church Fathers.
Greg Petersen:
  1. The Quran is Muhammad’s greatest miracle and proof that he is the final prophet. Although he was illiterate and untrained in rhetoric and literature, the Quran is universally considered to be the greatest piece of literature ever to come out of the Middle East. To this date, nothing has matched it. This proves the Quran was not Muhammad’s word, but God’s.
LDS claim the same thing about Joseph Smith. Are both right? I say “No”. Both are filled with factual and historical errors, with the Qu’ran inserting “abrogation” into the mix, not to mention “the Satanic Verses”.
Greg Petersen:
  1. The Torah’s theology confirms the Quran’s theology of there only being one unified God as opposed to a triune God.
See above.
Greg Petersen:
  1. Jesus (according to the Gospels) maintained a moral lifestyle while devoid of power. Muhammad maintained a just lifestyle and ruled justly despite having been given immense power (‘the true test of a man’s character is how he behaves when given power’)
Mohammed may have been a reformer for a 7th century society of desert merchants and caravan raiders, but by modern (or even 15th century) standards, he falls a little short. Christ never participated in military raids, killed his critics (Asma bint Marwan), or preached violence towards “non-beleivers”.

Of course, you can always come back with the bare assertion fallacy “Yes Jesus did, but it isn’t in the NT because it’s been corrupted”.
Greg Petersen:
  1. Muhammad’s injunction to stop racial discrimination “a white man is not superior to a black man and a black man is not superior to a white man” led to the Islamic civilization progressing with a much higher level of racial equality than the Christian West.
See above regarding Muhammed as a reformer. I don’t suppose Christians would approve of Jesus if he preached peace, yet bought, sold, captured, and owned slaves, like Muhammed did.

Islam was first an EMPIRE. It absorbed much of the science customs, etc, of the people it conquered, like the Romans before them. Arabic Numerals are actually Indian, geometry from the Greeks, etc.
Greg Petersen:
  1. Islam is the religion OF Jesus, not a religion ABOUT Jesus.
You are free to believe that.
Greg Petersen:
  1. Millions of people convert from Hinduism, Christianity, Atheism, and other religions to Islam, NOT the other way around.
Falun Gong is the fastest growing religion in the world. Does that add legitimacy to its claims?

Also, I would point out that converting to Christianity or any other faith is punishable by DEATH in most modern Muslims societies (like the one you live in). Not to mention, Muslim dominated societies give less rights to non Muslims. Example: In Egypt, if Coptic man dies, the children are given an equal share of his estate. If one of the children converts to Islam, however, under Egyptian law, he recieves 100% of the estate over his Copt siblings.

Christianity doesn’t oppress those of different faiths.
Greg Petersen:
There’s more and I could go on but I think this will suffice for now.
You really should read up more about Islam. 🙂
Same here. As the decendent of people force to live under Islamic rule in Sicily, I know enough about Islam to know it is not the right path.

You keep talking about “historical fact”, but fail to provide it! Where’s the proof? The Quran has been changed. For one, it’s not even written in chronological order, but by the length of the suras.

Do you really believe that the human mind is so perfect that it can memorize a whole book without error? Many of the original reciters of the Quran were killed in a battle and Uthman had copies of the Quran burned because of contradictions in the translations, which made many Muslims question the validity of their faith. So much for the perfection of the Quran!

As someone who has taken college courses in both Catholicism and Islam I will weigh in here for just one second.

The Bible that we read today is NOT the exact same as the Bible of 300 AD. Yes, the same books are in it. But some translations omit a verse here or there.

The Bible in 300 AD was not written in English. It has been tranlated from the original source languages. Now, what this means is that some things may have been lost. Great works of literature always lose something in translation. Look at ANY book that has been translated.

As for the Qur’an, translated versions are not considered the Qur’an. Therefore they do not have that specific problem. However, as has already been stated. The Qur’an as it exists today is not the same Qur’an the was revealed to Muhammed. There were different versions of it, and we cannot say with any accuracy that the standardized Qur’an of today is exactly as it was revealed to Muhammed.

What does that mean for both religions? Nothing. The minor errors that have been inserted over the years does not dilute their meaning in any way.

Oh, and just a fair warning to all: Christians, Jews and Muslims all believe in the God of Abraham. He has reveled himself to us in different ways, but it is the same God. Anyone who disputes that is sorely mistaken (not to mention going against Church teaching).

The best thing I can say is that Christianity was based on Tradition from God himself before it was based on the Bible.

Many forget about the persecution of the early Christians during the first 381 years of Christianity though somehow it still grew. Islam kills those who convert to Christianity, as did the Romans in their day.

The Nestorian heresy was a misguided form of Christianity in the Arabian Peninsula during the time of Mohammed which made similar claims to that of Islam which stated that Jesus was not God.

There was only one man in the history of humankind who was divinely authorized to edit the Qur’an… and that man was the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

It has been established from authentic traditions that the angel Gabriel, who conveyed the revelations of God to the Prophet, himself arranged these verses. Each year during the month of Ramadan, Gabriel would come to the Prophet and recite before him all the Qur’anic verses revealed up till that time in the order in which they exist today, after which the Prophet would repeat the verses in exactly the same order. This dual process has been termed al-Irza, ‘mutual presentation,’ in the books of hadith.

It has also been established that in the last year of the Prophet’s life, when the revelations had been completed, Gabriel came to the Prophet and recited the entire Qur’an in the existing order twice, and similarly the Prophet also recited to Gabriel the entire Qur’an twice. This final presentation is called al-Arz al-Akhirah in the books of hadith.

When by the help of Gabriel, the Qur’an was fully and systematically arranged, the Prophet recited it to his companions on different occasions in the order with which we are familiar today. The Qur’an was thus preserved in its pristine form in the memories of tens of thousands of the companions during the Prophet’s lifetime.

In short, the complete Qur’an that we have today was authenticated by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself shortly before he died and it has remained 100% pure and unedited ever since.

As was pointed out before, hamba2han, Muhammed did not write, let alone edit, the Qu’ran. It was transcribed and compiled after Muhammed’s death.

What you state is an article of faith, not any type of valid textual criticism .

I get my info on the history of the Qur’an from authentic reports from the companions and family of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)… and that is why I can categorically state that my explanation of the history of the Qur’an is accurate.

Where are you getting your info from regarding the history of the Qur’an?

Modern historical consensus.

Are you claiming the Qu’ran was written, and compiled before Muhammed’s death? You state that Muhammed was “was divinely authorized to edit the Qur’an…”, yet later state he “…recited it to his companions”.

Did Muhammed write down the Qu’ran, or not? Is there an authentic codex of the Qu’ran, penned by Muhammed’s hand?

The Qur’an which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was memorized by thousands of his companions, some in full and others memorized parts of the Qur’an.

The revealed verses were written and arranged under the direct supervision of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) throughout the 23-year period of his prophet-hood and this is what I mean when I say that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) edited the Qur’an.

No other man in history edited the Qur’an after it was completed and authenticated by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself shortly before he died.

The fact that the Qur’an was compiled into a book form only after his death… and this project was supervised by Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) who was the personal scribe of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)… does not change the fact one bit that the Qur’an is 100% pure and unedited.

Yet the earliest codexes are dated after Uthman. You are entitled to your beliefs, hamba2han, but there is no academic consensus on this history.

Scipio,

Thank you for your valuable insights into the religion of Mahomet.

Greg Peterson,

You’re sophomoric and splenetic attack on St. Juan Diego reveals your true colours.

hamba2han,

Even if the spurious Koranic claims to perfect preservation are indeed true, in of itself, it is not an evidence of the verity of the Islamic religion. Johann Joachim Quantz’s treatise Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen (On Playing the Flute) comes down to us unaltered from 1752 - that does not mean that it was divinely inspired.

This thread caught my eye 😉

I noticed somebody mentioned Tabari.
“When Eve became heavy with her first pregnancy, Satan came to her before she gave birth and said, ‘Eve, what is that in your womb?’ She said, ‘I do not know.’ He asked, ‘Where will it come out from-your nose, your eye, or your ear?’ She replied, ‘I do not know.’” Tabari I:321
I hope you realize that most Muslims recognize Tabari as not being an authentic source of Hadith. Even during his era, Muslim scholars did not pay attention to Tabari’s work, and it was largely discredited. A better source of Hadith would be the Canonical Sahih Bukhari, although from what I’ve heard, Shi’as reject that for another canonical collection of Hadith.
"Muhammad has the authority to say he is the “Seal of the Prophets” because he said God gave him the authority.
The same could be said about Bahá’u’lláh, or Joseph Smith. They all said they were prophets, too.
Except Joseph Smith or Bahaullah did not perform miracles. Nor did they create a successful religion that became a massive world faith.
Yet another bare assertion fallacy. The early Church Fathers contend the Ebionites were heretics. Given the choice between you and their contemporaries, I will stick with the early Church Fathers.
The Jewish rabbis claimed the early Christians were heretics and blaspheming against God. Given the choice between you and the early contemporaries of these people, I will stick with the Jewish rabbis 🙂

Christ never participated in military raids, killed his critics (Asma bint Marwan), or preached violence towards “non-beleivers”.
Read history for a change. Muhammad did not engage in anything as vile as the Inquisition, which did take place in Europe even after the 15th century. Nor did he exterminate an entire primitve native population (like the European colonizers of the New World).
And Muhammad showed immense mercy during his reign as a king. He forgave the man who murdered his pregnant daughter. He forgave the woman he mutilated and defiled his beloved uncle’s corpse. He forgave an entire city which had conspired to kill him and tortured him and his followers.
Also, for all we know, Christ would have done the same thing as Muhammad had he gotten power - Muhammad was basically another gentle Christ when he had no power. You cannot assume that Christ would have remained the same and then bash Muhammad on that basis.
Muhammad himself stated that ‘black and white are equal’ in his Last Sermon. This was not something ‘absorbed’ from other cultures, who were pretty racist at that time.
And please read about how slavery works in Islam before speaking about it. It is nothing like the type of slavery that was practiced in the West, especially America.
The OT allows slavery and Jesus never said anything about banning slavery, hence slavery is allowed by Christianity too - it’s just that most Christians choose not to follow it.
Arabs were primarily an ‘oral people’. Meaning everything, from tribal histories to family histories were passed down orally. Read any book on anthropology and you will see that oral cultures are able to pass down information perfectly through memorization and recitation like this.
Millions of Muslims today have memorized the Quran. They are called Hafiz (Guardians). All of them have memorized the same scripture, front to back, word for word. This includes Muslims from different sects - Sunnis, Shi’as, Wahhabis, and others all have the SAME Quran and their Hafiz have memorized the SAME scripture.

Even the Shi’a, who generally have an unfavorable view of Othman, consider his Quranic recension to be the authoritative one. They have the same Quran as Sunnis and other Muslims.

Othman had copies of the Quran burned because they were either being mistranslated or not copied correctly as new non-Arab converts flooded Islam. Take a look at the Sana’a Manuscript of the Quran which was found in 1972. It was one of the ‘corrupted Qurans’ that escaped Othman’s burning. The manuscript, if you read it, doesn’t make sense. It’s basically gibberish. Random sentences thrown together.
Othman HAD to get rid of Qurans like these. Otherwise it might have ended up the same way as the Torah 😦
We believe in one God consisting of three divine persons as it has been revealed to us by Jesus, the 2nd person of the Blessed Trinity.
i.e. a triune God. Muslims believe in a unified God, as do the Jews. One God consisting of One divine person/entity.

Modern historical consensus also states, as Greg pointed out earlier, that the Torah was written down centuries AFTER Moses and that there is no solid proof that shows the 4 canonical gospels were eyewitness account of Jesus’ life.

I also took religious studies courses in college and I’ve come across this problem several times. While I respect your belief, I will state that Muslims as well as modern scholarship heavily question the legitimacy of the gospels as eyewitness testimony.

The Qu’ran was written down during the Prophet’s lifetime, although NOT in codex form.
Muhammad himself couldn’t write - he had scribes write it down for him and other people recite the written document back to him, to see if the scribes actually wrote down what he said.
Quantz’s treatise doesn’t claim to be divinely inspired. The Quran does.
Quantz didn’t perform miracles. Muhammad did.
Quantz’s treatise didn’t lay down a sense of morality that greatly rose above local superstitions and customs. The Quran did.
I could go on and on, but my point is that your analogy is flawed.

And there’s a big difference between 1752 CE and 632 CE 😉

Yet the earliest codexes are dated after Uthman. You are entitled to your beliefs, hamba2han, but there is no academic consensus on this history.
The Qur’an was compiled into a book during the lifetime of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh&hf). In fact, he stated so in his last farewell sermon.

“I leave behind me **two **momentous things - the book of Allah and my kin, the people of my household. As long as you adhere to them both you will never go astray after me ever.”

The hadith above is authentic according to both Shia and sunni schools of thought.

In another similar hadith, the prophet is reported to have said the people of his household and the Qur’an will never be separated from one another until they both return to him at the pond of Kauthar. That is to say, his household are the protectors of the Qur’an and it’s interpreters.

We know that the leader of the prophetic household, Imam Ali (as) was alive and present when the Qur’anic text was standardized by Uthman. In fact, Imam Ali (as) as all the other members of the prophet’s household did not fault the Uthmani copy of the Qur’an therefore we have no reason to suspect it’s authenticity.

Here’s a more detailed and academic book on the topic written by Imam Shirazi
