Here is a false premise from which you are starting. As a Pentecostal, you may not know that all of Catholic Doctrine came before the New Testament was written. In fact, the Catholic Church was functioning for several centuries before the canon was completed in the fourth century. Therefore, it can safely be said that NONE of the catholic doctrines have “direct biblical justification”. They all proceed directly from the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles. In fact, Catholics wrote the Bible, so it reflects Catholic beliefs.
This is a great point. The church produced the bible, the bible did not produce the church, as happened in every denomination save the Eastern Orthodox.
Don’t you ever ask anyone to pray for you? Don’t you believe that the effectual fervent prayers of a righteous person are of great value?
Strange as it may seem, many 21st century Christians apparently believe that once you die, you’re just dead and/or cease to exist. “Soul sleep” rears its head again. And, Christ reveals to us through the bible that God is God, not of the dead, but of the living. Private interpretation once again.
“He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” Luke 10:16
The power to bind and loose is also disregarded a lot these days.

Christ’s peace.

King James version was first published in 1610. The seven Dueterocanonical books were included at the back of the 1610 edition and there was a penalty of one year in prison if a KJV bible was printed without these books.
Hey Pax,
Don’t you mean 1611 for the original KJV?

I just knew it didn’t look quite right.

Aside from that, your post is well written. [sign]Way to go![/sign]
Between Pax and CM, talk about nuclear deterrence! These are hard sayings! What sola scripturist can withstand them? And many posters followed this forum no more…

To another Bishop, or even a priest.

If you think about it, of course even the Pope needs to confess. He’s not perfect. It’s just kind of strange thinking about it coming from a Pentecostal background and being taught that Catholics believe he is perfect (which I have since learned to be false, of course).

Lots of good info here, guys! Thanks. 😃

You know, I never thought of that. But to who(m?) would the Pope confess?
Any priest he wants to. I remember a Servite Sister back in the 50s telling me that Pius XII made his confession daily to a Servite Priest. Others may know who subsequent Popes have used. I get the sense that he sticks pretty much to one guy, though.

To my knowledge the deutorecanonicals in the original KJ AV1611 are in part between the OT and the NT not in the back of the Bible.

I my self am a totally onfire christian and I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
That’s wonderful. Several here were Church of God or Penticostal, a couple of the were even pastors. In fact, the majority of those here, according to a recent poll, are previously protestant Christians until we discovered the Church which Jesus Christ founded. Welcome to Catholic Forums.

We will be happy to answer your questions but each thread is for one subject. Please pick the subject that you’d like to discuss first and post that question in a thread.

May the grace of Jesus Christ descend upon you and lead you to the Pillar and Foundation of Truth.

For some reason in most Catholic and Orthodox forums the postevangelicals, the postliberal protestants and the reverts are a majority over craddle Catholics. Go figure.

The belief in Limbo, or purgetory.
These are 2 different things. Check the links others have posted, for info.
Limbo was a theological speculation.
Purgatory is the process by which Christians are made clean for Heaven–a kind of a:) nice warm bath before meeting the King face to face.
The high place that Mary has in catholic doctrine. Why is she prayed to? Why do many catholics beleive that she was sinless throughout her entire life?

The high place that saints have in catholic belief. Why are they are called upon to ask for forgivness? Where does the process of calling someone a saint come from? as i understand it it is very long and involved.
Why ask anyone to pray for you? We all do it. It’s asking for intercessory prayer by our brothers & sisters in faith.
Why did the catholic church only alow the bible to be in latin for such a long time? I understand this may not be the beleif of the contemperary catholic church, but if anyone knows why this was done in the first place?
This is a myth. There were Bibles in many languages.
The reason that so many Bibles were in Latin, is because in olden days, anyone who could read at all, could read Latin…In fact, Latin was the common language of many people as late as the 19th C.
Why is the bible not the only source of catholic doctrine?
For one, because the Bible was compiled by the Catholic Church; there had to be a knowledge of sound doctrine in order to know what books to include in the Bible in the 1st place!
Why does the pope hold such a high regard? why do people fall to his feet and kiss his hand as if he is higher than everyone on the planet? it says in Gods word that nobody is rightous, not even one. Why is a sinner treated as if he were perfect? Catholics may not believe that he his, it just seems that many treat his as if he is.
No one treat the pope as if he were perfect. Catholics honor him, because he is the head of the Catholic Church on earth.
The best comparison would be how a person living in a monarchy views the king or queen.
Like I said, i do not seek a fight, I seek answers as to why these beliefs and practices have been established. Thank you all and I wish you all a blessed day.

Others have answered better than I, but,👍 HTH!!

The belief in Limbo, or purgetory.

Purgatory is more of a “something that happens to you” not a “place we end up”. The idea is that we need to be perfect to be in the presence of God. Most aren’t. So our souls need to be cleaned or “purged” of any sins. When the Gates to Heaven were closed by Adam’s sin the rightous who died rested in the Bosom of Abraham aka Limbo. Waiting for the Redeemer God promised us.

~The belief in “trickling” baptism as opposed to the the way that jesus was baptisted in full emersion

The Bible never says how much water to use. It just says water. There was no indoor plumbing back then,so no bathtubs. When Saul was baptized in Acts 9:18 it just says " he got up and was baptized". Right where he stood.

~The high place that Mary has in catholic doctrine. Why is she prayed to? Why do many catholics beleive that she was sinless throughout her entire life?

**We ask Mary to pray to her Son for us. Just like I can ask you to pray for me. When the prayers are answered we know it was God and not her that answered them just like I know it would not be you who answered them. **

In the Catholic ( in Greek=Universal ) Church when you attend Mass (Latin=Dismissed) no matter where you are in the world all are on the same page. The Scripture you hear in the USA is the same in Italy and China. And having a “universal” language helped. Because now it is in everybody’s language I can not understand the Mass in China or Italy, whereas before I could have.

~Why is the bible not the only source of catholic doctrine?

Which came first? The Bible or the Church? It was through the Church that the Bible came to be,not the other way around. Jesus taught the Apostles who then taught the rest of the church and then wrote. The Author came first then the Book.

~Why is it that the catholic church and the lutheran church are so at each others throats, and yet theologically the Lutheren church is the closest to Catholicism of any protostant denominations.

Martin Luther was a Catholic monk who broke with the Catholic Church and started his own “church” in 1517ad. It was then the “Protestant Reformation” began. Before that? There were no Protestant Denominations!

You have to read about the “Protestant Reformation”!!!

Pope is Latin for “poppa” which means “father”,and like a father he leads us to Jesus.Just like Peter did.
