I have heard at least a dozen stories in my life about wild results on the board. If people believe they want to talk to there aunt who died the devil is more then happy to put on a show. It’s never a good idea to open doors and let things into your home.

Next thing you know you’re having strange things happen and calling a priest to come bless your house (or much worse). It’s usually a case of curiosity killed the cat. The board is nothing it’s what your asking for and inviting to happen.

I don’t understand how Parker Brothers makes them. Do they just put letters and numbers on a board an all of a sudden it’s a Quija board with the ability to contact spirits?

When I was in college hanging out at the Newman Center one Friday evening, I took a very disturbing phone call from someone looking frantically for a priest. He, his roommate and some friends had been messing with one the night before and put it up when it got scary. Earlier on Friday, he got in from class and found it our again, thought his roomie had taken it out again before he went home for the weekend, and put the thing back in the closet. (Note the roommate was already gone at this point.) He went upstairs to change and when he came down the thing was on the table again… I advised him to burn the thing and took his name and number then hunted down one of the priests, who then went to his office and called the poor guy.

The Ouija Board: A Game or a Gamble?
by Fr. Robert Allgaier

One day, after speaking to a group of High School students about the dangers of dabbling with occultic activities, such as Ouija boards, I asked if they had any questions or comments. In a subdued voice – and without a hint of sarcasm or levity – one boy raised his hand and said, “I had something…happen…to my friend and me when we used a Ouija board.”

The room of teenagers was hushed as he explained what happened. They had used the board “just for fun” and didn’t expect anything to happen. They were wrong.

I think everyone who has used one has a story to tell. We used to play with one in junior high. We usually just had it (correctly) predict the outcome of upcoming WWF matches 🙂 but things got scary pretty quick when we started asking about “who” we were speaking to.

The friends’ house we played at was a mortuary at one point, and after spending a week or two we asked the “spirit” to give us a sign. The board said “yes” and the lamp in the living room clearly blinked three times. Being kids, we ran out of the house screaming. The next day, we doused the board in Holy Water and burned it. 🙂

Yes. One can make one out of cardboard and a petry dish.

Has anyone actually used one or know anyone who’s used one? I’m surprised that you can buy them at toy stores, also. Btw, thanks for the article, Annunciata.
I’ve used them. It’s a parlor trick to spook everyone around you. 2 or more people put their finger’s on the little piece, and sooner or later someone’s gonna move it while claiming their doing nothing. Just fun and games.

Just fun and games.
Hello wabrams :tiphat:

I have some questions for you.

Is calling upon spirits “just fun and games?” What kind of fruits are being produced by this game? Is it in line with Church teaching?

Thank you for your reply.

It can be considered fun and games when the whole thing is bogus to begin with.

Unfortunately, those requesting the conjuring of a spirit are successful too often, and too many people are too comfortable in a belief that the demons can’t act in the world as much as the angels.

I’d have like to hear you convince the kid I spoke to that the board getting itself out of the closet and set up on the table was a “parlor trick”. He was terrified. Just because some folks make the pointer move to try to fool thier friends doesn’t mean that’s the only thing that can happen when messing with one.

Even the pagans and witches on their forums suggest people not mess with ouja boards.

I remember fooling with them as a kid. Never had anything exciting happen, just lucky I guess.

Conjuring up spirits is a bunch of voodoo hoodoo if you ask me; right up there with palm reading and tarot cards.

Sounds like a bunch of stoned college kids. I remember those days of “seeing” things.

Wabrams, I’m guessing you used one and you purposely made it say something, or one of your friends told you that they did. This, however, does not discount all other weird things that have happened with them. I know people who have had serious scary things actually happen. Surely not every single scary ouija board story is false, is it?

Alright, now I probably won’t sleep tonight, and will certainly say extra prayers before turning in.

Back in the late '60s 3 of us girls had a slumber party at my house, in my room and the ouija board came out. The one girl had used one before and told us it was fine, we could talk to anyone who was dead, etc. etc. We waited till my parents went to bed on the other side of the house and then proceed to use the board in my bedroom. To make a long story short, the girl who had ‘experience’ went into some kind of trance, the room got ICE cold and she looked at me with a look that gives me chills to this day. She came at me and tried to choke me, she wasn’t kidding. The other girl grabbed her off me, the board went flying, I got the light turned on (still can’t believe my parents never heard all that!) and she came out of the ‘trance’. She didn’t remember anything, but when we told her, she got really scared. She was real sleepy after that and was drifting off to sleep when she asked what that smell was, we could all smell it, it smelled like roses. She said not to worry, her grandmother must be here, she loved roses.

I was scared to death to go into my room for several days, it was always COLD. I had no idea at the time what was going on, but finally after a couple of days I threw out the ouija board and decided to unpack my First Communion Crucifix and hang it in my room - the cold went away.

DO NOT HAVE ONE IN YOUR HOUSE! Do not use one, have nothing to do with one. It is not a game, it is an evil channel. Believe it or not, it’s your choice. I was there, I know what I experienced.

Wow, that is scary, JC. I would sooo like to use one just to see what would happen, yet I know that it is evil and wrong. But sitll…I am so curious! I must pray about this.

Why not? If you are expecting something weird to happen, your mind will play tricks on you.

Well, I think it ultimately depends on your motive.

If you are attempting to contact spirits this way, it is VERY bad.

But if you are just doing it as a parlor trick, or as a psychological test to see what people do and what they will spell, I wouldn’t worry too much.

I think you have to intend to open yourself, at least implicitly, to spirits for evil spirits to come…otherwise, it is, in the end, just moving a lense over some cardboard.
Still, because it is related to the occult, I wouldn’t do it because it could cause scandal or involve material cooperation with other people’s sin (how do you know what THEIR intent in using it is? you cant, so its dangerous)

If you want to conjur up some spirits, why not just invoke the saints in a nice litany. They are more than happy to come down and be with you and they’re from Heaven.
