For a girl to just give her phone number to a guy, even if it is at a catholic retreat, shouldn’t that raise eyebrows? Is it a done thing these days? A own to being a Methuselah 🙂 It would be prudent to just ignore the whole thing and put it out of your mind.

So what happen did you do it ???/and this is a question asked all the way from South Africa. 🍿 waiting

So I was at a weekend retreat for Catholic youth…Right before the retreat ended this girl, who I hadn’t talked to all weekend, gave me her phone number and requested that I text her.

If this had happened anywhere else, I would have thrown the piece of paper away. However, it happened at a Catholic retreat. Part of me says since it happened at a Catholic retreat, I should at least get to know her (I wouldn’t actually start dating her until I had gotten to know her better). Just because she was at a Catholic retreat doesn’t mean she was there willingly, but according to her name tag, she had been there before. It’s not the type of retreat you go to again if you don’t like it.

I discussed this with two female friends. One said to ignore it; the other said that it would be “polite” to respond.

Thoughts?
i think asking the question is like you already know what you want to do. if you dont know if it is a good thing to do talk to your priest before you call her. i’m not saying ask him to check out her credtials. if your interested and unsure after that do a backround check online. then decide. or see if you meet again and apologize for not calling because you wanted to get to know her before you started texting. that will go over fine with the right girl.

it is done and doesnt always mean the same thing…even initiating conversation doesnt mean the same thing for everyone. he would have to know who she is before he could find out what the intentions are.

I’ve gotten a lot of responses saying I should contact her. Any thoughts on what I should say? As Dan Daly pointed out, her intentions may not be courtship, even though that would be the most logical explanation…but what if that isn’t the reason and I contact her and say something wrong?

#conundrum
if it isnt courtship or anything sinful then you cant say anything wrong. just pray before you call. the thing is its ok to have friends, she may have a calling to be a nun may have heard someone repeat something inspiring you said. or she could be a silly girl with butterflies in her stomach and if you call her or dont she’s probly still grateful alittle she didnt let the whole retreat go by without talkin to you.

To the OP: There’s no right words to use. Don’t overscript this.

Now, to unnamed others: OP comes here asking about a young lady who may like him. Someone has told him to discern religious life. Another says, “ask a priest.” To them I say: Are you serious??? “Being Catholic” need not always mean “Being a killjoy who must discern a vocation while constantly seeking guidance from a priest, particularly about dating. marriage, etc.”

Now, back to OP: Time’s a wasting. Young lady is not going to wait forever. Call her ASAP. Please. If nothing else, it’s polite.

👍👍

I’ve given my number to a guy…after he serenaded me with piano and songs in the student union. It was fabulous. 😃

I think we went out once…and the interest just wasn’t there on both sides…he was a stunningly hot hocky player but perhaps had one too many run ins with the wall…that comercial for the gym were the guy goes “I pick things up and put things down”…him in a nutshell.

I have never heard so many possiblities for avoiding calling someone. Unless the OP is a semnarian and the woman bethsheeba then there’s no good reason not to call.

I don’t think it’s too forward at all, it’s the modern version of dropping your hankie.

After my guy just once and spent the best hour I’d had in forever I gave him my phone number and told him that he should call me. He did. 😃 I’m all for girls giving guys their number.

A second 👍. There is nothing wrong and everything right with starting a friendship with another young Catholic, male or female. No matter your faith journey, you can never have too many friends and if that’s all that comes from this initial phone call, well you’re blessed no matter what.

OP you should call her back!

There’s nothing wrong with a girl ‘making the first move’ like that. As a guy I find that very attractive because it shows she has a good sense of self confidence. Who says us guys always have to catch women at the right exact moment and have the perfect thing to say ?😃

She’s a) “Catholic enough to be at a Catholic retreat” and b) basically walked up pushed her # on you.

!!!

Stuff like that does not happen to mere mortals. It is the stuff dreams are made of. Do you know how manuy decent Catholic guys pray for exactly that to happen???

My advice? Call and/or text IMMEDIATELY, as in, within 24 hours, particularly if you find her even remotely attractive. You’ll kick yourself for decades if you don’t. Plus time and tide wait for no man, and women love a guy who seizes the day.
GOOD GRAVY MAN! DO IT! I can’t agree more with the gent quoted. It’s hard to find ONE Catholic girl, let alone one that gives ME her number.

I’m a little stunned this is even a question. A girl gives you her number. You call her…there, it’s that simple.

Throw the number in the garbage and join the monastery.

You will thank me in about 50 or 60 years. 😃

As for the OP text her and say: “i texted” 🙂 and then call like 2 minutes later so she can see you do things without being told lol
